Munch, the interns, and the vykkers were all pretty cool, but damn near every other character design from Munch's Oddysee or Stranger's Wrath was sad. When Farzad left, so did the intelligent character design and instead we got stuck with these anthropomorphic muppet characters.
The fuzzles are easily the most pathetic looking creature ever to grace OW. There is absolutely nothing even remotely realistic or intriguing about them.
Stranger's Wrath, though a fun game and continuing with Oddworld-type ideas, lacked sickeningly in the character design department. You were forced to fight recycled bad guys from Crash Bandicoot sequels.
Everyone wants to comment on how cool fangus klot could have been or how sweet citizen siege will be, but these are all dumb-ass FPS ideas with a random Micheal Moore quote thrown into the game design. Doesn't anyone remember how great oddworld was when it defied everything that had become cliche about video games? No boss battles. No inventory icons. No health bars. No weapons. You would die from a single scratch and everything around you had either an empty stomach or a machine gun. The story was dark and mature and didn't compromise. When 3D was law, they went 2D photorealism and had the finest FMV's to date. And from the very top-most shallow layer of the experience, and dripping to the very bottom was the IDEA: an actually artistically conceptual message that was being thoroughly communicated in an exciting and still young medium.
Oddworld should have shot for Shadow of Colossus, but Gears of War pays the bills, I guess. Good luck with the movies.
So, to answer your question: I like bats. They got a bad rap.
