Actually coca-cola is so called because of the two main ingredients: Coca leaves, and Kola beans. Originally, the whole Coca leaf was used in the production of the drink, which meant that small amounts of Cocaine (enough to get people addicted) were present in the drink.
The present day drink still contains the same Kola bean and Coca leaf, but the leaves have had all of their Cocaine removed.
The "Coke" name was made a trademark of the Coca-Cola company when they realised that people were using this shortened name instead of the full name.
