When I was 12 Linkin Park was my favourite band. I still genuinely like A Thousand Suns though, but that's probably because it's way more electronic than any other album they've done. I don't like metal or screaming in songs.

I'm kind of glad Cobain died before the inevitable duet with Britney Spears. It's always harder to watch an artist lose their integrity than it is to see them lose their lives.

Nirvana was never that interesting to begin with.

If it's Death Metal or Screamo shit. Then yeah I agree completely.

I actually love Metal. Mostly classic stuff like Iron Maiden, early Metallica, Slayer and Ozzy. But I also like bands like Machine Head, System of a Down and Hell.

Also Pirate Metal is fucking hilarious.

I was making a joke about heavy metals, but it was too subtle or too bad.

I legit don’t like heavy metal music though. It just sounds like noise.

I was gambling on if you were joking or not. It's fine though.

Yeah. Metal can sound very samey after a while. But it's a noise I enjoy more than most. haha.

I try to be specific when it comes to music in general. The list of bands and artists I like is actually quite small. I usually go for stuff that has a unique sound or if they're a classic.

I also used to listen to power metal and symphonic metal, especially Blind Guardian. I can't say I hold the same enthusiasm for them anymore, though. Sometimes I get nostalgic cravings for them but that's about it.

I mean, it’s weird because most of what I like is like a close relative of metal, like punk rock or alternative or whatever. But somehow this one collection of drums and guitars sounds so much nicer to me than this other collection of drums and guitars.

I was hoping Nate was going to link this.

Anyway a lot of music, especially in the world of pop, isn't bad as much as it just isn't good or interesting. The trash really stands out, and so does the good stuff. What you're left with in the middle is a slurry of uninspired mush that nobody will care about in 10 years. People can and should enjoy what they want, and discussions on music tend to be way too elitist and toxic. If people suggest music to you definitely take it in to consideration though, and go into everything with open ears and a clear mind. I've seen too many people shoehorned into awful stereotypes of despising anything that doesn't have guitars, or conversely disowning almost everything post Romantic era.

Basically everyone should just make up and listen to more Stravinsky.

The Symphonies of Winds is a great one to throw out there at people, too. It's easy to knee-jerk and close off to it with the slightly brash introduction, but if you sit and really listen to the entire thing the feeling is just amazing. I love Strav's approach to composing - he'd just play things at a piano over and over again, making changes until it felt right. Fuck the rules, fuck romantic melodies, fuck traditional harmony. He had a feeling he wanted to convey and could do it in an incredibly powerful way.
