started watching Dexter again. i gave up a while back half way through series 3 because i just got bored. anyway i rewatched it and got hooked again, although the climax with his new killing buddy i could see a mile off (can't remember his name or spell it for that matter, some mexican geezer who holds a lot of influence). it annoyed me that he killed him not just because it was unbelievably predictable, but because i think the only unpredictable thing they could have done would be to not kill him and instead have them work together again.

there's tons of potential shit in that. drama, fuck up's, a look at how Dexters friend changes over time. instead they kill him off quick before the season ends and yeah, you get all the drama and fuck up's etc, but at an accelerated rate so it's all just thrown at you again which is kind of a cop out. there's more oppurtunity to be had going the other way, not everything comes down to "i need to kill you so you don't kill/out me". they could've killed him off in the end but jesus use what you've got, man. its called fucking character development.

i also heard a fucking great line that had me laughing. there's a scene where a forensics expert totally disproves some big cops theory on who the murderer is, finishing with "that's science, and science is one cold-hearted bitch with a 14 inch strap on". ahar!

I hate Dexter. I think it's terrible television masquerading as passable television, but the costume was made out of duct tape, and can't hold up to any scrutiny.

I remember liking the Trinity arc. I think that was season 4? And the only reason I liked it is because I never pieced together what was going to happen in the last couple minutes of the season finale. I like it when something happens I wasn't expecting.

My parents are trying to get me to catch up on it to the most recent season just so they can nerd to me about it, but I lot interest at some point during season 5.

It's an okay show overall. There are way worse shows on than Dexter.

The writing. People don't talk, or act the way they do on that show. Also, almost every story line is so implausible that I'm unable to suspend disbelief.

I wouldn't watch the show even if it was good for reasons that are completely not their fault. It is their fault that the show is so poorly written, and it is really poorly written, but the other issue I have is Miami. I hate Miami. I hate the way it looks. I can't watch shows or movies set in Miami without getting this feeling of revulsion at the aesthetic of the city. That's not their fault, but it's still a shitty show.

Dexter is awesome. If TV shows were realistic they'd be pretty fucking boring.

to be honest i agree with you, there's loads of implausable shit and i'm always picking out plot holes and dumb shit that would land your arse straight in jail and yet never does. i still watch it in the hope something exciting happens, and it does on occasion, but eventually i get bored again and stop watching. thus the cycle repeats.

also yeah, the fuck's up with Miami? too many palm trees and latinos. jesus. literally.

I think it's the colors. I've been to a lot of places in Florida, and it's very pretty there. But Miami is like this hot pink, baby blue paradise of nausea, and I can't stand looking at it.

Designed with our modern times in mind, the Omni Consumer Products that is the studio franchise machine gives you the new RoboCop—an update of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven model, created primarily for an audience who never liked that movie anyway. Gone is that cumbersome social satire that took precious time from scenes where RoboCop shoots at people, replaced by a more streamlined, barely-visible hint of commentary on drone warfare. The new RoboCop is an action machine with a soul—just like RoboCop himself, now that he’s been modified from a dead guy whose brain was implanted into a cyborg, to a guy (played by The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman) who was just burned really, really badly, then given a kickass metal suit. Along with the general lack of gore, this new RoboCop will fulfill all the Prime Directives of PG-13 filmmaking.

“We’re gonna put a man inside a machine,” explains Michael Keaton’s character who has never heard of cars, apparently. (Along with Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman, Keaton is one of several flashy new upgrades that should inspire consumer confidence.) And indeed, the new RoboCop is definitely a man first—maybe a man who’s manipulated by his suit’s programming and “the illusion of free will,” but nevertheless still a man capable of gazing in angry disbelief at his own transformation and even having heart-to-heart talks with his son. But most importantly, he does it all while snug inside a sleek, protective armor that swaddles him like the most highly advanced of iPhone cases. Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a new guy in town. His name is RubberCop.

All of those filmmaking crimes pale in comparison to the tired cliche of the human heart overcoming outside programming in spite of it making no narrative sense.

I watched Stoker last night. It was so much better than the first twenty minutes led me to believe it would be. It was interesting in the beginning, but it really starts picking up after that. It's weird because in the hands of a lesser director this would have ended up being a crappy, forgettable soft porn film. The story, on its own, on paper, is not really very interesting, but the actors, and the director made it fascinating. I recommend watching it.

It's also the first English language film by the guy that made Oldboy, and Thirst. So, if you liked those at all, check it out.

Oldboy was fucked, man. well, i say that, but i watched the whole thing. with my jaw hanging and eyebrow raised, i watched the whole fucking thing in silent horror. every time i tried to turn it off something would grab my attention again, i didn't know what the fuck was going on anyway so i just grabbed the tail-end of the ride and hoped for the best. like trying to unravel a riddle written in code by a sky-high-opium-crack-whore-den Sherlock Holmes and you're the special retarded version of Watson here to solve the mystery. it probably didn't help that i was drunk as a skunk at the time but that's probably somebody else'ssss fault too.

but yeah i watched it again, understood a little better, and liked it. although my expression throughout remained the same as the first time i watched it. i can't help it. i'm still doing it now, come to think of it. but sweet jesus THE OCTOPUS, MAN

I watched In The Loop the other day because it's written by Armando Ianucci, the mastermind behind Veep (one of my favourite shows currently running). It was quite funny: very British, dark and involved some political shit I didn't quite understand because I have zero understanding of the UK's political system. I'd like to say I have a broader understanding now, but I'm unsure.

But I liked it quite a bit, some terrific performances (James Gandolfini as a controlling, patriotic general was awesome) and a an engaging plot. Got a little bit dull during the middle but the front and end of the movies were packed with brilliant one-liners, great dialogue and hilarious incompetence. Recommended.

Gotta watch The Thick of It now.

Watched Prometheus on DVD yesterday. I really enjoyed it and it's one of my favourite Sci-Fi films of all time. Lately I've been watching Dexter Series 8, 24 Series 8, Breaking Bad Series 1 and Who Do You Think You Are. Hoping to see Riddick soon, it looks good.

I've heard the fourth season is an even larger drop in quality than the 3rd one was, still haven't bothered to check it out. Season 5 marks the return of Dan Harmon, so it might be better, but I'm willing to bet Sony will continue to short them budget wise.

Watched the first part of My Neighbor Totoro with some friends last night. We got really high first, and I guess the person setting it up didn't know if it would be in English, so he put on subtitles. The subtitles were for Japanese speakers though, so it didn't at all match up with the words actually being said at times and even skipped some lines. It was hilarious. I do actually want to sit down and watch it for real though, seemed good.
