ALIVE stands for Aware Lifeforms In a Virtual Environment. This is the name Oddworld Inhabitants gave to their AI system.

Obviously the system is entirely built into the Oddworld games, but check out Paul's Level Editor if you'd like the opportunity to mess about with AO/AE NPCs.

Nope. You should re-check your source. It was trademarked in 1997 and has always been that.

I think it was a magazine. "Environment" makes more sense. We like virtual environments, and it's where aware AIs might exist. But virtual entertainment? Who wants virtual entertainment? I only pay for actual entertainment. I find virtual environments to be actually entertaining. Especially if they have aware lifeforms in them.

You know full well it's virtual in reference to it being entertainment on a computer, not virtual as in 'not quite entertainment'. Virtual lifeforms could exist outside of an virtual environment, sure, but do away with the entertainment and you're left with a clinical simulation at best.

That's very odd, I had "Environment" in mind as well. Arg, because of you it's I'm going to have to dig trough some of my old stuff now in order to check this.

It's actually Alive Lifeforms in Virtual Entertainment according to the book, so everyone is wrong!

Including me, I distinctly remember it being Aware Lifeforms in Virtual Environment just like everyone else.

"Yet one thing that worked incredibly well was Aware Lifeforms in Virtual Environments system (ALIVE). This artificial intelligence routine cleverly controlled the actions of the creatures in the game according to the situation they were faced with and the type of character they were. It also meant Abe could decide to solve some puzzles and ignore others. The player could even trick Sligs into shooting each other. “ALIVE was really a philosophy about how we wanted characters in games to behave, and what we wanted gaming experiences to feel like,” says Lanning. “The achievements were largely in the creative solutions, while every step of the technology was an ongoing struggle.”

http://www.nowgamer.com/features/895...s_oddysee.html

so most places have it wrong

Edit:

http://www.trademarkia.com/alive-awa...-75375266.html

So it is actually Aware, not Alive
