Hi.
I've just joined this forum, but I actually saw this topic on google on the first day of it's creation, when I was seeing if there was a remake available for the ds.

I myself cannot help towards this, as I have no knowledge of programming.
But I'd like to give you this link which could help with reference:
http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/oddworld/

If you scroll down you can preview the whole book. It's rather small, but it has plenty of pictures.

Keep up the good work

Hello again,

So after making the Mudokon run i realised that he doesn't necessarily look a thing like Abe ... maybe a Mudokon, but a weird looking one at that.

Thanks for mentioning the eyes, they just didn't stick out enough for a real Mudokon look. (I also made the mouth stick out more for good measure Varrok )So I've decided to remodel and re texture the character again just so I can get him right.

He's looking much better now too model wise (texture wise is a bit iffy but its not finished yet)

So until the model is finished with texture I say many thanks again and i'll see you soon

PS my websites up! http://www.cameronrooney.com/

PPS i'm one achievement away from Recon armour.....

Dead

Hey just thought I'd give you guys a peek at the new texture (top half of the body is about 75%, the rest is somewhere around 0%

by far the most complicated texture I've ever done and so organic too (for those playing at home robots are super easy )

He's coming along quite well, I think you guys will be rather pleased

(can u see the smiley face )

Post so wait what does abe look like again...

Blue? Who's blue?

Oh hey quick explanation about the colour choice btw. I do have the Art of Oddworld book where Abe is clearly green (not unlike the abe in the corner of the default theme for this site). Which is silly because in the game he is very obviously blue (to differ from the green mudokons). And in the book, on his texture map, he is practically purple.

I've gone with the colour underneath, mainly blue, light areas a light green and dark areas purple.

Off with the finger!

Also I'd like to point out the number of digits on each hand.

I recently purchased both abe's oddyssey and Exoddus and as we all know on the moon he holds up his hand and there is 3 digits...but in Oddyssey there's clearly 4...So we have a bit of a creative decision to make.

Considering this is an Oddyssey remake we probably should stick with the 4 fingers. But on the other hand I personally think Abe is more iconic as the 3 fingered man, considering the moon has a big hole in it (with only 3 digits).

I'd love to get your input

GO with three fingers. It is now OWI's 'official amount of fingers on a mud ".

I agree, but don't use the moon as 'proof'. There are plenty of pictures of a 4-fingered moon.

That was changed only because of meat packers (ironically) in japan only having four fingers and it was classed as offensive. If you plan on not offending anyone, go with three. I would stick to four though just because AO had four.

I say 3, considering that 3 is the official canon now for Mudokons.
BTW, it's funny since Sligs have four fingers and they didn't get affected (well, maybe one thumb and three fingers... but you get the picture).

Sad Can i get a 3?

Alo alo

yeah I completely forgot about the Japanese meat packers bit. I really don't want to piss Japan off so I'm just going to stick with 3... or I'll make both and have a big "Are you Japanese?!?" question at the start, that'll fix everything.

Oh yeah this is a remake by the way but by no means is going to be a true or perfect remake. We're going to do the best job we can to try and make a true Abe's Oddyssey experience with all the same themes and gameplay. But if we have a choice to change the game for the better and make it more fun I'd want to take it :P

Nice name grieva :P i like your style. I heard final fantasy VIII was a fkn sick game.

I checked out what I assume is your youtube channel, looks like some great stuff man we could definitely abuse your nice offer in the future :P

Was this information worth double post? I think... yes

Although there isn't much information last few days, I think Griever M3n and I are making good progress both in asset development and "behind the scenes" work. (Think engine & such) We will have something to show you soon

And yeah that article is also posted in the general discussion, its a good read and I'm really excited about MO coming to pc, although will it have the same graphics as Xbox? bechause then it will be like out-dated.

somebody suggested using Unreal Engine 3. It's very good idea for creating non comercial mod. For Abe mod you should to achieve effect like in game Shadow Complex (type in Youtube or Google Video). I can help you a bit in Creating levels in Unreal Engine 3

Hey Fartuess, Griever M3n and I already choose or engine out of some others, Unreal Engine 3 was on the list but we both own the Unity Engine license, and know our way around it, so we decided on that :-)

if you say so, but for noncomercial projects UE3 is free, so if you don't want to sell game . If you already choosed engine, then ok, but you schould know in which engine creating game/levels will be easier

Ok, just to make this clear, we are NOT choosing an engine. We already settled with the Unity engine a couple of weeks ago and are happy with the engine. We both know how it works and how to provide a good gaming experience for you guys.

As for an update on progress, Griever M3n and I are very busy at the moment, with our Oddworld project but also with some other stuff (Work, College etc.). As soon as we have anything worthy to show you, you will see it

I was wondering about your abe texture, have you got the UVs flipped and layered on top of each other? ive just had a major screw up doin that with my big bro model
the normal maps where inverted on one side, do you have a way to avoid that?

Hey Grieva!

Yeah we had that with some models, but turns out it works fine in our engine.
I don't know if Griever M3n found a way to get it done in Maya, you'll have to wait for him to reply

Yeah i got annoyed when i rendered it in maya and the layer'd normal map inverted itself on mirror'd geometry but Unity takes care of it for us apparently ...

i googled around trying to find a way to correct it but it was pretty unsuccessful. If it didn't do it properly I'd just unwrap the entire model properly :S

Unity is making my life easier, which is handy
