The continued existence of the thread confused him.
Oh sure, it was a fine joke early on. A gag here. A penis joke there.
But it remained, undisturbed; untouched by the moderators for posts and posts. There were attempts to get it closed, a joint petition made at the unease it caused. It stuck out so well--bringing members back, making them post like it was a million other things. It began to consume the rest of the forum. Disjointed, unrelated dialogues that ran threads clear off the tracks, an incomprehensible mass of inside jokes that lasted only minutes. In a short time, it was an orgy of poor sentence construction, of purposeful threats and squads of trolls. It became uninhabitable for those above it, The moderators and Administrators. They sealed themselves in the lounge, wary of PM's and blogs. The one thread, the cause of it all, was eventually kicked from the front page.
The true quality of posts, which had ebbed and flowed in a cavalcade of bandwagonnery, slowly improved. Discussions took place, several members returned, bringing with them the cold hard fact that they'd let it go too far. The rules were changed, made more concise. Joking occured, at length, but it never got out of hand. Things were, once again, normal.
It was months later when a new member, rules unreading, found the thread. It had, by some unfortunate coincidence, not been deleted.
He read through it. Pages and pages of unintelligible fads, memes, and poor jokes.
He posted.
