Usually the collapse of the earth into a black hole isn't on the list of side effects though.

With the stakes this high I say they need more time to research the theory.

Insane.
These are black holes with event horizons so minute that the chance of them ever intercepting in their lifetime even a single jot of matter is extremely diddy. Such black holes are theorized to be littered everywhere, floating through us as we speak.

Edited because I’m in backwards land.

Emphasis on the 'they' - this is just ignorant journalists spouting their opinions, as always. The scientists know, theoretically speaking, what they expect to get out of the collider.

Besides, I read somewhere that if this thing does destroy the universe, it will happen so quickly that we won't even realise we're dead.

Being put that way, it's quite reassuring. And how typical would it be: "What? Lottery record and it's all my..." *disappears along with universe*

I guarantee you that we will all still be here at the conclusion of this experiment.

And if I'm wrong, no one will be pointing out the fact, rendering my ego relatively unbruised.

I think that one of the side affects could be creating another universe, mainly becuase hitting particles together 1 mile below the speed of light is theroized to have created the big bang

A mile below the speed of light? Are you trying to set up a pun for later? Something like ‘the deep c’?

Kidding aside, how do you suppose time travel could be done? Put all the SF aside and think a bit...

Huzzah. I had the chance to visit CERN with my former study-mates, but I turned it down.

I'm very interested in the whole project though, since I'm a bit of a science-head myself :P.

We really don't know enough about time and it's operations yet exactly. But one point being is that if we do invent a time machine, it won't be coming into the past, or if it does it'll be very careful. Because then if it ever did come back to our time period, we'd know about it now.

Despite our array of knowledge, we still know very little about the operations of the universe and many such things. We're only simple creatures really, and we still (unless global warming ruins everything) got plenty of time to learn more.
