Isn't it sad that this is the most interesting thread on the forum? Anyhow, I once speared a catfish. Surprised me I think as much as it did the fish.

Question

:
Coelacanths are a Lazarus Taxon, not a living fossil.

Well, here's one of the modern species, Latimeria spp.

And three extinct species, Macropomoides orientalis, late Cretaceous; Rhabdoderma elegans, late Carboniferous; Allenypterus montanus, early Carboniferous; linky (Clack, 2002)

Tuataras, like coelacanths they have two extant species of the same genus, and underwent significant differentiation in the mesozoic.

The photo is either not real or not living. They live in very deep water and die at the surface, and cannot be kept in captivity.

excellent video, brilliant contribution!

:
how come they are pests?

to be honest you are kinda a pest with all this double posting so should i go and try and "rough" shoot you?
lol, yes! but i would recommend a machine-gun, because i will run...a lot!

i was waiting for this question to pop up. when a gardener finds a plant that he does not like, or that makes the garden suffer, he will call it a weed. if he wants to grow nettles, he would call a bluebell a weed, and vice versa. therefore meaning that 'weeds' are just a point of veiw, but are always unwanted.

its exactly the same for pests, if you have a shed full of pigions, a rat would be a pest as it would eat the bird seed. if you had a shed full of rats (strange, i know), a pigion would be a pest as it would also eat the rat feed (dont take it literally, just an example). so on a farm, (which is the sort of place you would do 'rough' shooting), im afraid rats, pigions and rabbits all contribute to eating crops and livestock feed, making them pests. i would go into the painstaking details of how much money an average farm would lose every year due to these 'pests' if they were left to it, but im tired. maybe another time.

:
Relicanth, anyone?

That pic looks kinda fake to me. The lighting. That is not a photo of a real fish. And the background's kinda screwy and pixellated in comparison to the fish. The fins also look too thick. I'd say model+fake/added on background.
yes, i think its safe to say it is. but Metroixer did say himself that he thought it looked fake.

@Disgruntled intern;
very, very good point, and for once i dont know what to say...

@Old and not so tasty;
i'll take that as a compliment
jesus!! how did you manage that, and where??

I'm not sure how it's sad, fishing (not to sure bout Rough shooting) is a very interesting subject to talk about . Oh and secondly, nice job on the catfish. Did you actually try or just did it without much thought, and just got it by really lucky chance?

It was close to midnight and I was holding the metal pole we usually used to tie the boat to the dock. I saw a catfish go under the pier and I just spontaneously threw the pole at it. Later I stuck it on the pole, put the pole in the ground, and stuck a cigarrette in the fish's mouth. I was 14.

I've been Noodling a few times, and I love it.

Fishing is still one of my favorite things to do. There's nothing better than renting a piece of shit boat, riding out into the middle of a lake, casting your line and drinking beer with a couple of friends for the whole day. I'm a catch and release kind of guy, though.

I went fishing when I was younger, and I enjoyed it. However, when I saw that I killed a fish, I felt very guilty and haven't done it since.

Man I should grow some balls someday.

yes, sometimes it happens, but usually only when your still learning to fish, keep at it and it wont happen again.

forgive me if i am being ignorant, but what is Noodling?

and im with you all the way with the 'havin a few tins, fishing all day'! i dont see the point in killing your catch either, unless you really need to eat.

good skill! but i think putting a fag in its gob is going a bit too far.
when i kill pests, quickly and humanely, people dislike me for that sometimes, but its not fun at all, its pest control. so it annoys me that i get moaned at for that, and yet i dont painfully spear pests then place a cigerette in their mouth afterwards probably while their still dying, in a sort of mocking way.

sorry OANST, but i respectfully disagree with your 'fishing' technique.
no offence meant what-so-ever.

That was the whole point of me pointing out that I was 14. It's not the sort of thing I would do now.

...and if you do accidentally kill a fish, makes good bait! :P We did that with a little perch, huge beast perch attacks within moments, and...gone. Line, and my trace. That was my dad's fault though.

Though nowadays, I'd more likely keep the fish and put it in a jar of formaldehyde rtaher than use it as a bait.

Urban Dictionary defines noodling as:

A form of fishing in which a crazy person runs into a lake and searches for holes on the bottom with his foot. Then he inserts his finger into the hole and lets something bite it. Hopefully, it's a catfish. If so, he wrestles the catfish to the surface and drags it to shore. If its not a catfish, he may lose his finger to a snapping turtle or his life to a water moccasin.

Believe it or not, noodling is illegal in many states.

Sounds about right to me. But these were giant flatheads, so we were using our whole hands..Not our fingers.

Everybody fish in the sea and in the Ocean... but are there any fisherman who fish in the rivers? Believe me, the fish are smaller than the marine fish, but fishing them, is so good and gives you satisfaction. Anyway I love also fishing in the sea, but in Mediterranean Sea along the coast tere aren't big fish.

Awesome.

It has its cons. Having a few layers of skin peeled off of your arm is sort of unpleasant.

But the risk of being injured and the thrill of catching a 25 pound fish with your bare hands just can't be beat.

Fishing is one of my obsessions. Although I don't fish as much as I'd like to nowadays, I still remember how it was like to fish off the piers of San Diego at night. All the mackeral would be swarming round the edge. My biggest catch was an albino sea bass. (Have no idea how much it weighed, but it tasted good the next day)

I didn't know you could sell live animals on Ebay.

More importantly, how would one ship a freshly caught wild sea bass?

I think you, and your suggestion, are dumb, dumb, d u m b.

Where there's a will, there's a way. Clearly we wouldn't depend on the conventional means of transportation and the organisation of such when considering the delivery of a large and live fish. That would be silly.

Ever catch a fish with a hypodermic needle sticking out of it? It's always an adventure. After eating you're never sure if you will get high or AIDS.

I don't eat fish, so I save time by sharing needles with the local prostitutes.

I hear that their vaginas have a rather fishy odor, so I guess it's pretty much the same thing.

Is it actually legal to eat caught fish over there?
You need a licence to fish anywhere except the pier, which is where we usually go.

This is going to sound extremely weird, but I've always wanted to go hunting. Somewhere in Scandinavia maybe. Not "rough" shooting like was discussed here, but I mean real hunting. Bears and wolves and stuff.
The dream of my life.
