Animatronic Pseudo-Glukkon Head.

I obviously don't post much, but I figured all of you oddworld fans might enjoy this anyway.

The head was sculpted/designed to resemble a glukkon. The eyes move left and right and blink while the upper lip can curl back to reveal the teeth.

It was originally a clay sculpt, which then went through the mold making process, and eventually, this foam latex and servo monstrosity was born.

I'm not really happy with the paint job, but I've never been any good with an airbrush.

Woah, very ncie model DI,m I wish I could make things like that. As you said, the colour is slightly off, but its still very good. It reminds me a bit of the Moxx of Balhoon from the last series of Doctor Who, probably due to the colour. Still ,very very ncie work.

Wow, this is pretty amazing, Dave.

I really like it, if I lived nearby I could probably give it a bang-up paintjob. Can you tell/show me what might be underneath?

Sekto, it's actually in storage now ; but I can certainly tell you what's underneath.

Two small servo motors control the eye movement while a cable puppeteering system controls the lip movement. Being that foam latex is so flimsy, a fiberglass "skull" is also fitted inside the head to help maintain shape and enable it to be worn like a regular mask. In case you were just asking what it's sitting on, that's a life cast of some jerk named Karl.

It took me about six weeks from start to finish. Then again I was working on two other things at the same time, so I probably could have finished it a little faster.

Thanks for all of the kudos.

Cool. In your make up department do you get to work on the puppets and effects as well, or do you only paint the actors?

I've done a little of both, although I've worked with more people than puppets.

Although the real reason I got into the make up business was my love of horror movies, so my true passion is doing FX work. Whether that's mixing thirteen gallons of fake blood, life casting limbs, or making entrails, it always gives me a metaphorical hard-on.

Hey, that's pretty neat looking, DI. I've been a fan of animatronics ever since I ...found... some old episodes of Dinosaurs (the Jim Henson sitcom series).

Wow! Disregarding the fact that it resembles glukkon, it's so beautiful. For someone who's good at air brushing, you're really good.

I had no idea you did this sort of thing; I thought you did purely make-up art. Any other past threads that I'm not aware of in which you've shown off such a talent, or is this the first? And can you continue in your career with using a variety of talents--both make-up and animatronics, or will you eventually have to just pick one and concentrate on it?

I'm not even in the make up industry anymore.

Living on thirty dollars a week in LA just wasn't cutting the mustard.

And $925 a month for a one bedroom smaller than a motel 6 room was just insulting. I'm actually on my way to becoming an art teacher.

As far as past threads, this is pretty much the only one.

Towards the end of my short lived hollywood based career I actually started working at a creature shop and gave up on make up entirely. Listening the some over paid jerk off tell me, "Yeah, I got tired of the jag so I bought the lincoln." while I applied make up to his smug little face really rubbed me the wrong way.

Ah, I can certainly understand making such a change then, although I've lived in a little camper with my mom that would fit into a small hotel room, so I feel like I could live in almost anything. I wouldn't be able to deal with those sorts of people either... But a teacher? I never would have guessed you'd want to deal with kids, but it seems oddly appropriate. I'm sure your future students will both fear and love you.

It wasn't the lack of space that bothered me...It was the amount of money I was paying to live there. I don't know what rent is like in your neck of the woods, but a 3 bedroom apartment goes for about $450 in my hometown and the surrounding areas, so...yeah.

I've always been passionate about art. My friend/past art teacher is actually the jerk that convinced me to pursue the whole teacher thing. I'm not sure how wild I am about dealing with high school kids every day, but teaching a couple of advanced classes should make it worth while.
