Animatronic Pseudo-Glukkon Head.

I obviously don't post much, but I figured all of you oddworld fans might enjoy this anyway.

The head was sculpted/designed to resemble a glukkon. The eyes move left and right and blink while the upper lip can curl back to reveal the teeth.

It was originally a clay sculpt, which then went through the mold making process, and eventually, this foam latex and servo monstrosity was born.

I'm not really happy with the paint job, but I've never been any good with an airbrush.

Woah, very ncie model DI,m I wish I could make things like that. As you said, the colour is slightly off, but its still very good. It reminds me a bit of the Moxx of Balhoon from the last series of Doctor Who, probably due to the colour. Still ,very very ncie work.

Sekto Springs 04-01-2006 05:18 AM

Wow, this is pretty amazing, Dave.

I really like it, if I lived nearby I could probably give it a bang-up paintjob. Can you tell/show me what might be underneath?

used:) 04-01-2006 06:10 AM

Cool! Great job on it. I have always wondered oif someone would do something like this. Kudosness!

Matriar 04-01-2006 06:17 AM

WOW! This is great!
How long did you work on it?
It's very nice! :D

Disgruntled Intern 04-01-2006 06:57 AM

Sekto, it's actually in storage now ; but I can certainly tell you what's underneath.

Two small servo motors control the eye movement while a cable puppeteering system controls the lip movement. Being that foam latex is so flimsy, a fiberglass "skull" is also fitted inside the head to help maintain shape and enable it to be worn like a regular mask. In case you were just asking what it's sitting on, that's a life cast of some jerk named Karl.

It took me about six weeks from start to finish. Then again I was working on two other things at the same time, so I probably could have finished it a little faster.

Thanks for all of the kudos.

Sekto Springs 04-01-2006 06:58 AM

Cool. In your make up department do you get to work on the puppets and effects as well, or do you only paint the actors?

Disgruntled Intern 04-01-2006 07:01 AM

I've done a little of both, although I've worked with more people than puppets.

Although the real reason I got into the make up business was my love of horror movies, so my true passion is doing FX work. Whether that's mixing thirteen gallons of fake blood, life casting limbs, or making entrails, it always gives me a metaphorical hard-on.

Dipstikk 04-01-2006 10:37 AM

Hey, that's pretty neat looking, DI. I've been a fan of animatronics ever since I ...found... some old episodes of Dinosaurs (the Jim Henson sitcom series).

Alector 04-01-2006 10:53 AM

Hahaa! Nice! That looks awesome. You are a good colourist also. I love the shadings and the details on the face. It makes everything realistic. So, when are you going to scare your neighbours? ;)

Disgruntled Intern 04-01-2006 02:31 PM

My neighbors are 87 year old devout christians. Something tells me scaring them would be a mistake.

Abeguy 04-01-2006 03:29 PM

make an OW animatronic movie!!! can't go wrong with the classics

Sekto Springs 04-01-2006 04:25 PM

Yeah you can. That's exactly why Mystery Science Theatre 3000 exists.

AquaticAmbi 04-01-2006 06:20 PM

Wow! Disregarding the fact that it resembles glukkon, it's so beautiful. For someone who's good at air brushing, you're really good. :)

I had no idea you did this sort of thing; I thought you did purely make-up art. Any other past threads that I'm not aware of in which you've shown off such a talent, or is this the first? And can you continue in your career with using a variety of talents--both make-up and animatronics, or will you eventually have to just pick one and concentrate on it?

Disgruntled Intern 04-01-2006 08:54 PM

I'm not even in the make up industry anymore.

Living on thirty dollars a week in LA just wasn't cutting the mustard.

And $925 a month for a one bedroom smaller than a motel 6 room was just insulting. I'm actually on my way to becoming an art teacher.

As far as past threads, this is pretty much the only one.

Towards the end of my short lived hollywood based career I actually started working at a creature shop and gave up on make up entirely. Listening the some over paid jerk off tell me, "Yeah, I got tired of the jag so I bought the lincoln." while I applied make up to his smug little face really rubbed me the wrong way.

Sekto Springs 04-01-2006 09:00 PM

Yeah, creature shop would mow face.

I want to get into directing to myself, try and take advantage of the open windows bastards like Burton have left open for me. Step aside you assholes, I'm coming for you and your little dog too.

Ah, I can certainly understand making such a change then, although I've lived in a little camper with my mom that would fit into a small hotel room, so I feel like I could live in almost anything. I wouldn't be able to deal with those sorts of people either... But a teacher? I never would have guessed you'd want to deal with kids, but it seems oddly appropriate. I'm sure your future students will both fear and love you. :p

HarHarhar!!! That would be funnier scaring them, then! XD

It wasn't the lack of space that bothered me...It was the amount of money I was paying to live there. I don't know what rent is like in your neck of the woods, but a 3 bedroom apartment goes for about $450 in my hometown and the surrounding areas, so...yeah.

I've always been passionate about art. My friend/past art teacher is actually the jerk that convinced me to pursue the whole teacher thing. I'm not sure how wild I am about dealing with high school kids every day, but teaching a couple of advanced classes should make it worth while.

Oddish 04-02-2006 12:16 PM

Wow, realy neat. You've done a great job, DI. It looks very much alive, almost has a personality, also kind of cute. The modeling and tones, inpressive stuff. It does remind me alot of a Gorilla/Ape though

Slig_Cake 04-03-2006 04:42 AM

Dude would you not post stuff like that? My scrab attacked the monitor and nearly totalled it!

Nah seriously that's pretty good stuff. I've been looking to see this kind of talent put into oddworld since i got here. It looks really good man.

lol yeh, they have issues those people. Thing you have to understand but is thaat if they're 87, then they would've had a pretty strict upbringing that makes them so full on religious today.

(i'm a catholic myself so don't think i'm a christian bashing atheist)

Disgruntled Intern 04-03-2006 04:16 PM

The more you post the more I dislike you.

Give credit where credit is due. We don't just bash christians. You're on the list too.

I don't think it's a good idea to say that to someone who just complimented on your work.

i know yeh? wat an arsehole lol

Sekto Springs 04-03-2006 05:39 PM

The thing about Dave is he couldn't care less what people think of him or his creations.

And frankly I can sympathize with him, keep your pet scrab bullshit inside the RPG forum if you please.

Paramite Mask 04-03-2006 05:42 PM

Woah, this is really cool, disgrunted intern. Nice job.:) Do you have any videos of this anamatronic awesomeness? It would be cool to see it move. Do you plan on making any more OW anamtronics? Nice job.

Sekto Springs 04-03-2006 05:49 PM

Yeah, Dave, I too admit I'd like to see this thing in action. Shoot us a video and I'll give you a Charleston Chew.

Disgruntled Intern 04-03-2006 10:06 PM

Well once I get moved into my new apartment I'll lug the damned thing out of storage and shoot a quick video or two. Unless the servos are fried.
