who like cell-shading

i do

...enough of the Alex parodising...does any one here like the cell-shaded style of drawing?

My favourite cell-shaded things are:
Jet Set Radio Future - the best game for the Xbox I've played so far. The cell-shading only enhanses the lovely Japanese-style designs ( http://www.jsrf.com/indexe.html - download the movie to see how nice it is)
The Simpsons - A classic cell-shaded TV show
Futurama - The main improvement over The Simpsons here is that occasionally 3D cell-shaded scenes are used to emphasise the futuristic theme.

Jet Set Radio was one of THE best games for Dreamcast. I dug the music, animation, and the gameplay kicked ass as well!

I don't know if this counts but Samba De Amigo was also animated. I love that game so much, before I even played it I went out and bought TWO sets of MARACAS and Samba'd for weeks in a row...I'm getting the urge to play it again.

I couldnt agree more with EVERYTHING you just said, Eibu! JSR is my favorite game EVER, and you can't resist Samba when you got Maracas! My arms still hurt! *Shake, shake, shake!* ^_^
I cant wait to play JSRF!!! It looks awesome!!!
Has anyone played Cel Damage for the Xbox? The game is OK, but the animation with SPECTACULAR!

Cel-shading is a cool effect in games. Some games look cool with it, like Jet Set Radio and Cel Damage, but some games look bad with it, like the new Zelda game for GameCube and House of the Dead 3 .

Grrr... I gotta explain this Zelda thing again.
The only clips from Zelda for GC that have been released are NOT from the actually game. Nintendo likes to keep it very hush-hush.

EDIT: This is like the second time I corrected you in the last half hour, WA. I must look like a real jack@$$. Sorry, Im not usually such a prickely bitch... Forgivingness Plz!

Cell Shading is a really neat concept. I think both JSRF and Cel Damage look REALLY good with it. Cel Damage (which is a really good game, from the demo of it I have) looks really cool, and very cartoony. There are cartoon explosions and in pauses they have really nice shots of all the zany action. If only I had money...*sigh*

That's true, Nintendo is a very hush-hush company, lol.

No problem. I didn't even know you corrected me somewhere else, lol. Apology accepted .

IMO, the best examples of cel-shading technique in 3D animations is the last Dysney movie: Atlantis, and the Gorilaz's Clint Estwood videoclip. It's amazing how this feature can give computer generated object a cartoonish look, as if they were drawn by hand.

Has any one seen the Gorillaz video "19-2000"? It has some excellent cel shading, and is really funny as well! I luv the Japanese sub titles!

How do you tell if the animation is using a cell-shading effect? I don't know what it means. But the animation styles I like are those seen in Ren & Stimpy.

It's hard to describe. It looks like a 3D cartoon with everything outlined in black (the games anyway). It looks great, but hopefully it won't be overused in games (i.e. why did they do cel-shading for a game like HotD3?).

**Go to the end of this reply to see examples of celshading**

Cel shading is an algorithm that is applied to a 3D object, giving it a 2D look, by giving it very defined borders. There are plug-ins in 3D modeller softwares to do this.

The number of colors are also minimized so that the transition bettwen the color shades are not smooth.

In a few words: it looks like a cartoon.

Good example: futurama. Many times you can say that a particular object was 3D modeled, because it moves smoothly, but it still have that cartoonish look, because of the lines and the simples shade areas.

I just found this site a couple of minutes ago. you can find more detailed information about this technology.www.celshaded.com

:
what’s celshading?
well, it’s using 3d to generate images that look like 2d hand-drawn cartoons, or cels. cels are the clear plastic sheets that animators use to paint on. shading, and shaders are computer algorithms that change the appearance of 3d geometry.

celshading is achieved by building models in 3d space, animating them, and rendering them, much like any other form of computer animation. what sets all this apart is the use of shaders on the 3d models, which makes them look like 2d when they get rendered.

special care and techniques are also used in the creation of the 3d models, to ensure that they match the desired style. settings like outline weight, cel bands, surface divisions, subpatching, and edge styles are all critical to make this technique work.

why celshade?
some people wonder - why would you want to do this kind of animation in 3d, instead of just drawing it like it’s usually done?

animating in 3d space is an enabling experience, and the types of animation that you can do are numerous. things like camera movement, rotational movements, perspective shifts and special effects are sometimes increddibly difficult to pull off when you’re drawing them by hand, but be orders of magnitude easier to do in 3d.

What’s this anime stuff anyhow?
Have you been living in a cave? Anime is the rockin hardcore animation from Japan. Not all of it is as hardcore as what the good stuff is, but the best ones have great stories, awesome technical animation, large amounts of graphic detail, a fair share of violence, lots of charm, and a little perversion all thrown together in a saucy melange.

Pokemon doesn’t qualify as good stuff. Just fluff.

Watch anything from Sunrise (Gundam(Rob’s favorite,)) Production IG (Ghost in the Shell, Blood, Jin-Roh,) Gonzo (Blue Submarine #6,) ArtMic (BubbleGum Crisis,) Studio Nue (Macross,) Otomo (Akira,) Ghibli (Princess Mononoke,) or GAINAX (Evangelion,) to see what the good stuff is all about... Disney it ain’t.
Below you see an example of celshading. The images to the left are 3D wireframes. The images to the right are the same models after celshading is apllied. They are not drawn by hand.

Wait until the gifs are loaded (it may took a while...)

I wouldn't mind seeing that, I've seen clips on TV ads and it looks so good!
