who like cell-shading
i do
...enough of the Alex parodising...does any one here like the cell-shaded style of drawing? My favourite cell-shaded things are: Jet Set Radio Future - the best game for the Xbox I've played so far. The cell-shading only enhanses the lovely Japanese-style designs ( http://www.jsrf.com/indexe.html - download the movie to see how nice it is) The Simpsons - A classic cell-shaded TV show Futurama - The main improvement over The Simpsons here is that occasionally 3D cell-shaded scenes are used to emphasise the futuristic theme. |
Jet Set Radio was one of THE best games for Dreamcast. I dug the music, animation, and the gameplay kicked ass as well!
I don't know if this counts but Samba De Amigo was also animated. I love that game so much, before I even played it I went out and bought TWO sets of MARACAS and Samba'd for weeks in a row...I'm getting the urge to play it again. |

I cant wait to play JSRF!!! It looks awesome!!! Has anyone played Cel Damage for the Xbox? The game is OK, but the animation with SPECTACULAR! :D |
Cel-shading is a cool effect in games. Some games look cool with it, like Jet Set Radio and Cel Damage, but some games look bad with it, like the new Zelda game for GameCube and House of the Dead 3 .

Grrr... I gotta explain this Zelda thing again.
The only clips from Zelda for GC that have been released are NOT from the actually game. Nintendo likes to keep it very hush-hush. EDIT: This is like the second time I corrected you in the last half hour, WA. I must look like a real jack@$$. Sorry, Im not usually such a prickely bitch... ![]() [ December 03, 2001: Message edited by: SeaRex ] |
Cell Shading is a really neat concept. I think both JSRF and Cel Damage look REALLY good with it. Cel Damage (which is a really good game, from the demo of it I have) looks really cool, and very cartoony. There are cartoon explosions and in pauses they have really nice shots of all the zany action. If only I had money...*sigh*

IMO, the best examples of cel-shading technique in 3D animations is the last Dysney movie: Atlantis, and the Gorilaz's Clint Estwood videoclip. It's amazing how this feature can give computer generated object a cartoonish look, as if they were drawn by hand. :)

Has any one seen the Gorillaz video "19-2000"? It has some excellent cel shading, and is really funny as well! I luv the Japanese sub titles!

How do you tell if the animation is using a cell-shading effect? I don't know what it means. But the animation styles I like are those seen in Ren & Stimpy.

Cel shading is an algorithm that is applied to a 3D object, giving it a 2D look, by giving it very defined borders. There are plug-ins in 3D modeller softwares to do this. The number of colors are also minimized so that the transition bettwen the color shades are not smooth. In a few words: it looks like a cartoon. Good example: futurama. Many times you can say that a particular object was 3D modeled, because it moves smoothly, but it still have that cartoonish look, because of the lines and the simples shade areas. I just found this site a couple of minutes ago. you can find more detailed information about this technology.www.celshaded.com :
