Chapter 8
As me and Chris finally put out the last of the flames from our breakfast fire we both took a seat and tried to calm
down.
“What where you thinking Tom!?” I desperately tried to shout through my panting.
I turned to Chris to see if he had anything to add but he just panted and wiped the steam from his eye lenses with a
dirty and burnt rag we had used to aid us in putting out the fire.
Tom just stood for a couple of seconds watching us catch our breath then quickly and quietly made his way to the
fridge, began pulling out a variety of ingredients and then put them on the oven as he retried to cook us breakfast.
“Dammit!”- “Aw Crap!” we both seemed to shout as Me and Chris lunged towards Tom at the same time and with
amazing speed.
I had managed to tackle Tom while Chris quickly grabbed all the food and turned off the beatup oven.
“Tom, I don’t think cookings your thing.” I said as I panted frantically.
“Yeah ya idiot!” Chris quickly added through his pants.
We both continued to pant desperately trying to get more air than we needed. Suddenly having a feeling of nausea I
leaned forward and looked down.
“Uhhhh”
I groaned trying to take my mind off of what had just happened and the throwup that was about to pay me a visit. As
I stared I slowly began studying the small little grooves in the tile floor. Out of the corner of my eye I could see burnt
pieces of my paper I had been reading when the fire started. I leaned forward to take a better look at it and quickly
realized that it was part of the article on Tac, the village chief, that I had never finished.
“Huh?”
I blurted out as I picked up the little piece of burnt paper. It was the last few paragraphs of the article , with one or
two bits of it missing. As I studied charred paper some more I decided that I should go and pay Tac a visit, maybe
the fresh air from the outdoors will help me feel better and I can see how much it will coast to fix the kitchen.
With that in Mind I got up and made my way to the front door.
“Hey” I heard Chris shout to me as I reached for the knob.
“Yeah?”
“Where are you going?” Chris asked as he nodded towards my hand stretched out for the door knob.
“Just for a walk, why?”
“Um, well I just wanted to know if you had seen Tom?”
Suddenly I realized that Tom had disappeared from the kitchen. I glanced around the room real quick then looked
back at Chris. Although he had a metallic mask on I could tell he had the exact same look on my face... panic. In an
instant we heard a loud crash from the living room and immediately ran in their. When we got there a ceramic pot
that was used to catch the wax from the burning candle it held was knocked onto the floor, shattered but Tom was
know where to be found.
Suddenly a couple of thuds came from one of the rooms ahead of us, but it was hard to decipher which.
“I got this room, you go in their” Chris said as he pointed to the room on my right.
“Gottcha”
And without another word we both stealthfully made our way into the two rooms. I stopped in the doorframe and
peaked in. A couple more things had been knocked over but not broken. I quickly and quietly made my way into the
room and glanced around, nothing. I was now faced with two options one door to the left of me and one to the right.
Since the one to the left was closest to Chris’s search area I decided to take the right one. I tiptoed up to the
doorframe then burst through and looked around but I still had nothing.
Nothing had been knocked over in this room so I decided to continue on. This time I didn’t really have a choice their
was only one door to my left and it lead into the main hallway. Caught up in the moment (and in my stupidity) I put
my two hands together and pretended it was a gun. As I ventured towards the door with my new gun I met up with
Chris in his doorway on the opposite side of the hallway.
“Anything?” he replied wiping sweat and panting even more heavily.
“Nope” I replied as I looked down the hallway back towards the kitchen.
“What the hell are you doing?” Chris replied panting as he noticed my pretend gun.
“Wha? oh.... nothing.” I said in embarrassment putting my hands back to normal.
The silence was suddenly shattered when we heard aloud crash comming from the kitchen.
“Oh No!” I muttered as we both ran at top speed down the hallway.
We got to the main living room right infront of the kitchen and slowed down. As we listened I could hear some pots clanging and the
refrigerator door being shut.
“Ok, I’ll go in first and suprise him then you run in and make sure he doesn’t get past me.”
“Right” I said quietly
As Chris quietly stepped ahead I put my hands back into the shape of a gun again and quietly followed. We both
stopped at the edge of the door frame and waited. Then without warning Chris jumped into the kitchen yelling.
Unprepared and suprised I stood there as the sound of pots and pans crashed everywhere.
“Get him!” I heard within the kitchen.
Remembering my role, I jumped towards the doorframe. As I did Tom ran out infront of me, looking back. In a panic
I held up my handgun and shouted...
“Freeze!!”
Tom just stood their staring at me, then slowly put his hands up.
Chris came out of the kitchen immediately after rubbing his forehead.
“Ow, why’d you have to throw that pot at me!?”
Chris said as he looked up and saw me standing their with my handgun aimed at Tom and Tom surrendering with his
hands in the air.
“........... You guys are weird.” Chris said as went and sat down in the living room.
Me and Tom just started laughing as we both looked at eachother.
“Ahh, ok guys Im gonna go take a walk now.” I said patting Tom on the back while I passed him.
I entered the kitchen and saw a mountain of pans, pots, and various other kitchen utensils scattered all over the floor.
It seemed as if the repairs where gonna cost more all of a sudden.
I just sighed and exited the front door. The sunlight glared into my eyes as I squinted and gazed in awe at all the
villagers acting out their lives. There where merchants in little booths lined up on the side of the road, a wide variety
of species having conversations and such, some where even on tall ladders hanging up decorations.
“Now why would they be doing that?” I thought to myself but then suddenly realized an article I had read in the
paper.
The article said the tomorrow night was the celebration of the four slaves that had founded the village.
“Hmm...” I mumbled and continued on.
I was suprised to see how friendly all the villagers where as just about everyone had greeted me in every way
imaginable. Even the merchants seemed joyous as each one I passed tried to sell me something.
“Ahh, just like the big city.” I said as a smile appeared on my face but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being
watched. Every time I looked around all I saw where happy villagers and merchants greeting me. However their was
one strange being that I noticed all throughout my journey to the VillageChiefs office. It was a male and wore a gray
hood over their head with yellow trimming. In fact their robe was much the same, gray body with yellow trimming.
I tried to shake the strange figure from my mind and enjoy my journey through the village. As I looked around at the
sites I suddenly realized that I had no clue to where the location of the Village Chiefs office was.
“Excuse me, could you please tell me where the Village Chiefs office is located?” I asked one of the nearest
merchants.
“Your one of them outsiders from last night aren’t ya?” The merchants asked
He had raggedy gray hair and one tooth (from what I could see) that was sticking in an awkward way from his
bottom jaw.
“Um, yes I am. Why do you ask?”
“Lotsa City people have lotsa money.” The merchant replied with a wide, one toothed grin.
“Well I suppose that is true.” I replied suddenly realizing that my need and want for money had greatly diminished ever since
this journey began.
“And lottsa money means ya can buy lottsa things.” he said as his grin widened.
“I supposed so.” I just stared at his wide grin.
“Whaddaya want me to buy?” I said annoyingly.
“Just that you buy this one of a kind * said in exagerlatinly mystic voice*cryyystal baaaaall.*” He replied as he held
up a clear orb shaped object.
“ How much!” I said in an aggravated tone.
“Just twenty pesos.” The merchant said as he watched me pull out a small bag of my money from the city.
“Pesos?........” I replied confused
“..........Never heard of it.”
The merchant looked at the small bag of coins.
“That should be enough.” He said as he quickly reached out and took the bag of money and tossing the Crystal orb
thingie at me.
I struggled to catch it as it rolled between in and out of my hands.
“So!.....” I yelled waiting for directions to the Village Chiefs office.
“Sooo?????...” The merchant replied in a confused manor.
“Wheres the Village Chiefs office!!?” I yelled frantically.
“Oh, that. Its right down there, the door with the sign that says ‘Village Chief’ over it.”
He pointed to the sign just a few feet away.
My jaw just about dropped when I realized how close I was and how stupid I was from buying this damn crystal! I
was about to drop kick the stupid thing when I had my strange feeling of being watched again. I turned around and
saw the same guy with the hood leaning against the wall and starring at me.
“Oh crap, I better get inside.”
I put the Crystal in my knapsack and headed over to the entrance to the Village Chiefs office. A gust of wind blew
right before I opened the door and I could see the clouds turning gray over the mountains of garbage in the distance.
“Hmmm, looks like a storm.” I said to myself then entered the building...
