Launched in May of 2003, timed with the E3 Expo trade show,
game magazine Polygon was shuttered yesterday by its owner, Deviation, LLP. Sources tell GameSpot the closure was based on insufficient ad revenues.
With only nine issues under its belt, the magazine was a rare combination of news, reviews, and thoughtful features. The last cover story took an inside look at Lorne Lanning and the creative crew at Lanning's dev studio, Oddworld Inhabitants.
The Polygon approach was deliberate and thoughtful--and its graphics rivaled many a top-tier magazine. Not surprisingly, such pedigree comes at a cost, one Diviation was unable to bear any longer.
Sources tell GameSpot that while Deviation considers how to use the Polygon name, subscriber list, and fixed resources, all staffers remain on payroll and at the ready.
