Best way to re-set a sleeping pattern?

I'm sure at least one of you has had this problem.

For the past 3-4 days I've been trying to sleep at a reasonable time of night, but I'm not tired so just end up lying there and getting bored. Then I get up and do stuff intending to stay awake the entire day so I can sleep at a reasonable time the next day (which worked for me in the past) - But then I get too tired to function and go to bed at about 8-10am intending to nap for a couple of hours.
