The moment we've ALL been waiting for

Posted 08-19-2010 at 05:54 PM by Pilot
...me to come back and post more poop.

No, but Kitt's just about done and is now a perfect exterior replica.

I've been holding off posting pics until I got the front scanner working. It's just not Kitt without that scanner! Those strange long overlays just below the hoodline are smoked plexiglass, so they only look black until the turn signal lights up and shines through. Next, to finish the artificial intelligence and deck out the interior, too!

In other news, I've closed down my doors to the public as far as TV repair and am working with my father as a jeweler. I'm really liking the work. I apprenticed with my dad years ago as a teenager and learned the basics but it really wasn't what I wanted to do at the time so I wasn't very serious about it. Now that I've gotten a little reckless youthful independence out of my blood I'm a little more serious about things, and continuing the family trade is becoming a strong appeal. My dad's store is practically right across the street from Nevada Beach on Lake Tahoe and we get some very interesting high-end clientele in... very much a mixture of tourists and established residents.

I love the look on someone's face when they pick up their jewelry... often times that which came in bent, broken or damaged which we go through, fix, and actually recondition- buff out the gold or silver. It makes a grateful customer. Light years away from the business of TV repair where the TV is not only a complicated device, but cheaply made and quite often after which mere pennies are thrown in an attempt to fix it.

Having a good time all around.

KITT is looking awesome. I can't wait to see his disgusting innards. Hasselhoff is a coincidence, by the way. A handsome coincidence.

What kind of tools and chemicals do you use to repair Jewelery? What are the hours like?

Thanks. Coincidence meaning by the way he was cast?

There are lots of little tools we use in jewelry repair and custom design, lots of different handtools and pliers with different shaped snouts that are all pretty much meant to be used to 'finesse' the metal in different ways.

A lot of repairs involve the use of an oxygen/propane mini torch to solder things together. All teh solder comes in different melting temps (ie 'super easy, easy, medium, and hard') that are used respective to the type of repair your're making and/or the delicacy of the piece. Sizing a ring for example. You're either going to be sizing the ring up or down which involves removing or adding gold/silver to the shank. Thick shanks should be soldered at a high temperature with hard solder... not only can the thickness of the metal handle the heat, but the harder the solder the more durable the repair. Fine work requires easy solder where not a lot of heat is desired. Things have a tendency to up and melt on you if you're not careful.

Also having an education in gems and minerals helps (even a brief one) to know what kinds of stones can take heat and which ones can't. Diamonds for example, you can solder right on top of them and it won't hurt them. Ruby, Emerald- not at all. Way too fragile.

Other tools we use- an electroplater, ring roller (for sizing up rings without adding metal, ultrasonic cleaner and steam cleaner.

Hours can vary depending on if you're working for a retail jewelry store with regular hours, or a jewelry factory, where you are paid pretty much by the piece. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

Coolio. And I meant coincidence in that I changed my avatar to him for no particular reason the same day you posted this blog.

An Electroplater uses current to bond Gold and silver to other metals, or something like that, right?

Ah. Nice choice. He looks handsome AND mature in that picture. He was a young man in Knight Rider.

To further the irony, I only started driving the finished Kitt the day after Comedy Central's Roast of David Hasselhoff. It was a day full of variations of "Nice Knight Rider/KITT. Did you see the Roast last night?"

Yeah. Using a special solution, you can 'plate' a metal through the process known as electrolysis to other metal. We usually plate white gold and silver with a product known as Rhodium. It's a chrome-like finish which keeps silver from tarnishing and white gold looking extra 'white.' Any white gold jewelry you may see is actually rhodium plated. (rhodium is a derivitive or Platinum) Reason being, white gold is actually a little yellow.

She's truly a 'beaut, Justin.

It came at just the right time with the airing of the Roast of David Hasselhoff.
