I have been summoned to jury duty Part 2

Yesterday I received an envelope telling me the date of my Jury Duty amongst other information. I don't know how much I'm actually allowed to say, but it'll start in the first half of June, so I have a few weeks to brace myself.

The duty (for lack of a better word) will be expected to last ten days to two weeks (some places in the booklet say ten days, others say two weeks) and if I get a really short trial they'll put me on another. It will only be longer than that if I get a trial about rape or murder or something. That oh-so-encouraging line saying 'few trials last 200 days' has cropped up again

But overall the information they've sent has left me feeling a little more reassured. The courtroom is quite close to the train station so hopefully I won't get lost trying to find it. And claiming expenses will apparently be sorted out while I'm there so it won't be a case of writing letters and talking to robotic call centres, which is good news.

My greatest concern now will be if any 'distressing' evidence appears I might get all squeamish (Argh! My greatest weakness!) and embarrass myself in front of all the hot juror babes. So amusing suggestions on how to get out of scary jury service are still welcome

I don't really know anything about Christianity or the Bible, so I hope you forgive me for asking: what about Christian homosexuals? They'd probably be set into Christian beliefs before they starting experiencing the symptoms of homosexuality - how would they react to that?

Oh, and as for Jury duty: would I have to look at horrible pictures of murdered people? I really don't think I could handle that. Fairly sure that, if I wasn't physically sick, I would be in no state to decide with any rationality whether the suspect was guilty or not. And I it would haunt me for weeks.

Hrm... I'll withhold my opinions on this text and simply ask you whether you think that gay men are less able to control their lust than straight men.

Because if you say that all gay men are having effective sex through their lustful looks, then every single straight man is an adulterer. On the other hand, if you think that straight men are okay as long as they control themselves, then gay men will also be fine.

Fair enough, any man who acts lustfully towards a person who isn't their wife is an adulterer. But I know Christians guys who are able to overcome those urges, or don't have them, so it's not a case of all men. The important thing is recognising what you're doing is wrong, and working from there to overcome the urges. If Christians ignore the sins or in the case of Christian homosexuals, say what they are doing isn't a sin, then they aren't living the way Jesus wants us to.

I don't have a problem with men loving other men (or the female alternative); but men lusting after other men is defined in the Bible as a sin. Christians believe sex is a spiritual thing as well as a physical thing, which is why the Bible restricts it to being between married men and women. However, this doesn't actually mean I want to herd homosexuals into a gas chamber.

Doesn't the bible effectively say that it's basically your responsibility as a christian to kill any homosexual you encounter?

And how exactly can you tolerate gay love but not gay sex? Love and sex are (most of the time) pretty much the same thing, so where is that distinction made? It's okay for two gays to love each other as long as they never intimately hug, kiss, touch or have sex? That's a rather fine line don't you think?

No, the Bible does not say we should kill all people who don't follow our beliefs. Jesus told us to tell all people about him, not slaughter anyone who doesn't believe in him (though that would probably be easier, admittedly).

And love and lust are total opposites. Love is emotional; lust in physical. Lust is all about gratification for yourself; love is about gratifying the other person/people. Even still, it's not easy to tell the difference, like trying to identify a side of a coin in the dark just by feeling it. I could quote some passages in the Bible, which has a lot to say on the very basics of love and lust, but I don't think people would be that interested.

And yes, it is mildly irritating that any time I post in a thread in OT it instantly degenerates into a fight about religion and/or homosexuality until I go away. It's like having a super power that makes all buildings in my vicinity fall down.

Precisely. I never said that being a gay Christian was easy, or that you have to change your religion to fit my worldview; merely that you should accept that being gay and being a good Christian are not completely mutually exclusive.

I don't see this as a fight. I just find discussions about religion interesting and I like learning where you're coming from.

I'm pretty sure Hitler didn't even believe in evolution. He never mentions any of its concepts in Mein Kampf, and also banned Darwin's books in Nazi Germany along with "All writings that ridicule, belittle or besmirch the Christian religion and its institution, faith in God, or other things that are holy to the healthy sentiments of the Volk."

There's also the little detail that any efforts to breed organisms or otherwise attempt to direct evolution is not evolution at all, but artificial selection, a practice that is thousands of years old.

To be fair, Splat, the only times I ever see you post in OT is in a thread that has some bearing on your religious beliefs. You pop in and put down your opinion, which you are totally justified in doing. But we are also justified in discussing your opinion and the reasons that we feel that you are wrong.

And being friends with someone doesn't automatically mean you can't question their opinions or believes. I have very healthy discussions on all sorts of topics with my best friends all the time, hasn't hurt our friendship yet.

I was a little confused by the "Love and sex are (most of the time) pretty much the same thing" myself. I had sex with my wife WAAAAY before I loved her, and I've had my penis inside of people I flat out despised.

I also love my friends to death, to a degree that is almost bothersome to Dorian, but I have no desire to sleep with them. As far as I am concerned their genitals have fallen off long ago.
