Yesterday morning I had my first day of Jury Duty. After being shown the metaphorical ropes, we were split into three groups, one told to come back tomorrow and the rest of us assigned one of two trials. Our trial was due to start after lunch, but after lunch break we were told the Judge had some legal issues to sort out and we would have to wait a little longer. A couple of hours after that, we were sent home.
This morning I returned and we were again told to wait a little longer. Then, a bit after midday, we were told that the defendant had changed their plea to 'guilty' and the trial was therefore cancelled. So we got sent home and told to phone in after 'closing time' to find out if we would be required tomorrow for a different trial.
So two days of my suspected 10 day jury duty are over and so far I haven't seen so much as the door to a courtroom. I have read nearly the entirety of
'The Shadow of the Wind', however ('s a great novel; buy it!!!)
At this rate, I won't get the chance to use any of those wonderful 'get out of jury duty' excuses we worked so hard on.
