I'm not sure about Gateway timeout problems ... have no idea sorry. But your ISP may be slow in updating the DNS. When you change where a site is hosted, the ISP has to update their DNS records so that it knows where to find a site. Kind of like a road map I guess. If they don't update, it still thinks it's on the old server.
Of course the company that the domain name is registered with took forever to do their stuff first ... where as usually these things take no more than 48 hours ... this took like nearly 2 weeks. I'm glad it wasn't a business site and I was losing money or something.
