What's your place like? 2nd part

The last thread is dead, I think it's time to start a new one. Let's discuss about your country's culture, history, famous recipes of your country etc.

Here's a famous recipe from Hungary.

Potato Cake (called Lángos or Krumplislángos in Hungarian)

3 or 4 med. potatoes
1/2 envelope of dry yeast
1/2 cup of warm milk for yeast
1/2 tsp. sugar
1 1/2 cups to 1 2/3 cups of flour
1/2 tsp. salt
Lard for frying

Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water.
Peel them and immediately mash them. You should have about 1 1/2 cups. Cool.
Mix the warm milk with the yeast and sugar. Let the starter sit for 5 or 10 minutes.
Mix mashed potatoes with flour and the salt. Start with 1 1/2 cups and add more flour to make a kneadable dough. Knead dough well.
Put dough in a bowl and cover.
Let dough rise in a warm place until double in bulk. About 1 hour.
Roll out the dough with a floured rolling pin on a floured board to 1/2 inch thick.
Cut into rectangles, squares or circles. Prick with a knife to keep big bubbles from forming.
Melt Lard in a frying pan so it is at least 1/2 deep.
Fry Langos over medium heat. If the lard is too hot they will burn, if the lard is to cool the Langos will absorb too much lard. You will have to watch them. Let them get a nice color.
When they are done, rub each Langos with a cut clove of garlic and sprinkle with salt and Paprika.

Potato Cakes are famous in summer, but people eat it in the other 3 seasons too.

Here's a picture of Lángos:

There are some shops in Hungary which are selling JUST Potato Cakes:

I mustn't of replied to this before...well in my country in Essex..England....we normally have either potatoes, chips (american for fries) and well fish and chips shop....which I believe is pretty yuck.

Another great thing is the drinks...Coca Cola...Fanta...other normal drinks...I don't know if Hungary is familiar with these products...but they taste good!

Coca Cola is very famous in America! Pepsi as well, but I like Coke better!

Something big on tv in america is "reality television". There's so much of it on tv and most of it is different shows of the same idea! Like "American Idol", "Star Search", "PopStars" and "Fame", are all shows where you basically try to become a Music Star. Those who actually make it only get about 14 minutes of fame, unless you're on "American Idol". That show would have to be the most popular.

I'm from London, we have kebabs, indian or chinese takeaway, "Whatever"-Fried Chicken places, Pizza, Fish and Chips, big fat roasts, and that's about it for food! Loadsa pubs, especially a great chain of pubs called "JD Wetherspoons!!" Well, that's across the UK. (My faves are Lloyds Bar No1 though.) Lots of community and arts related projects and venues here, great art galleries, and great markets across London. You can tell it's a city, in terms of certain costs and prices, it is absolutely ridiculous in London. Despite that, if you do your homework, you'll find there's loads of ways to enjoy yourself here.

Oh yeah, we've got loads of Reality TV shows too, but they've kinda died a bit, they used to be huge when they first came out a couple of years ago. Oh, plus I live near the Big Brother house.... and my claim to fame is that Penny from Big Brother II was my English teacher!

Yeah, they tried Big Brother here in America, but it wasn't as succesful as in the UK. In the UK Big Brother, people had sex under blankies, but nothing that exciting happened in the American version.

America.
Culture: Television.
History: Land raped from Native Americans.
Recipe: Fry it. You can't go wrong with lard.

More specifically... Knoxville, Tennessee. You know, for such a big city, you would think it would be more interesting. We have a couple malls. And a neat independent record store. And a few nifty hole-in-the-wall shops. And... we have some malls. Malls. Yep.

It's actually quite the scenic place once you get out of the city, though. Sure, there's tourists and stuff... but it's like that everywhere. C'mon! There's not one, but TWO country music-themed amusment parks. Whee!

Maybe it's not as bad as I make it out to be... maybe it is. How would YOU know, anyway? Bastard.

I live in an urban environment, a part of Brooklyn, NY called Williamsburg. It used to consist of mostly or working class people of Irish and Polish decent. But now it has been invaded by hipster, yuppie artsy people who raise the proces of rent, grpceries, pizza and just maybe the subway fare. We have a nice park here.....with some nice cafés....but most of the places are too expensive.

However, I am of Slavic decent, and one of my favorite dishes is stuffed cabbage. oooohhhh, it's so good.

basically, if you dont know what it is, it's ground up meat....beef.....cooked in tomato juice.....and then strained. The meat is mashed together with rice and then that is rapped with cabbage and then boiled. It's really good.

and with all the negative sentimentality with this board, you should all try cooking noodles...regular noodles, and then pouring some sour cream over them. really good!

Yes, we have stuffed cabbage and noodles too. They are tasty.
Hungarians know these drinks like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Fanta etc.

I'm going to let you in on a well kept detroit recipe. It is very famous around here

Take 1 gram of coke and mix it with some baking soda. Fry until both dissolve and then scrape it from the pan. Allow it to sit and cool until you have a rock. Congratulations! You just made crack! Now smoke up and until next time this has been twitchys corner, signing off.

That's 'very big' everywhere now. Not that anyone actually enjoys it.

Reality shows are not new for us, Hungarians. We have our own reality show too. Hungarian people like it more than Big Brother, I think. But I'm not one of these people.

well, i like fish and chips
recipe for SCHUMPPES (pronounced: scumps)

cream
sugar
food coloring
butter
taffy (saltwater) yellow coloured
honey
little flour

mix everything but the taffy in a bowl, stir thoroughly and add several drops of yellow food coloring until you reach a nice yellow.
melt the taffy in a seperate bowl using the microwave, pour melted taffy in the mix and stir thoroughly until it is one big yellow mess. you can put these in your lunches if rapped up well, they're ood but tend to get stuck in your teeth. they taste good with beef jerky bits mixed in
i know it sounds gross but it's good

Pyshechnaya are stands that sell doughnuts and coffee. I like their doughnuts most of the time. You can also get stuff like hotdogs too.

Kebabs are also popular where I live.
