Mad ferill's one legged rant

okay, so oddworld is one of the best games series ever made...but...how come at least 4 creatures on oddworld have only one leg? OWI is full of very original ideas, but how come they keep doing this?

one legged things:
chronicler
ratz
gabbits
meeps

i can understand gabbits have in one leg 'cause itsa like a fin. But chroniclers and ratz would look perfectally fine with 2 legs. So what i'm sayin is that OWI seems to be losing their originality, so i look to the next game with better hopes of more original things.

hehe
you are saying that 2 legs are more original then 1?
antway there are not so much possibilities: 1,2,3,4 (I can't imagine creature with 5 or more legs)

I don't think it is so un-original

First of all this is the mind of Lorne Lanning we are talking about here. I find one legged creatures to be rather odd. Much more stranger than two legged beings like Mudokins and such. Give a one legged being a chance. Its original because it came from the mind of a true artist.

Lol, this reminds me of my 'Slogs' thread which is becoming a
'No more Queens rant'.

You're right Xavier. Doesn't Lorne just tell the designers what he pictures the character as (like personality and looks) and the designer does the dirty work for him?

I wouldn't say it like that but I think it's approximatly the way it works now that lorne have lots of other work, just read the Inside CG story to see how it happen

its gonna be a long night is'nt it.

okay, originality is one of OWI good things. So by using the same idea 4 times, then they lose the originality. 1 one legged things was original, if they use it to much, then they lose that originality.

of cource! but I'm simply trying to say that there are no other solutions so if oddworld wants to make more characters they will all the time have similarities...

but true it looses it originallity (but it isn't that bad for this)

Right, what happens when we have the third three-legged character? Do we get bored with that as well? How long can a two-and-a-half-legged creature be original? Like Xavier has said, there aren't that many options, and we surely aren't looking for all of OWI's originality and inspiration to be used up in the first two-fifths of the Quintology are we?

Its so obviously to show the intelligence and such. Its a common pattern. the less legs, the more intelligent. Lets take, Cockraoches, Dogs, and Primates. The less legs the higher the intelligence... Thus, following my theory, things like Gabbits and Ratz are the pinacle of Oddworld intelligence.

That makes sense, because then at the top of the known Oddworld intelligence scale is the Almighty Raisin, who doesn't have any legs.

Although on the other hand fleeches and Slurgs do not have any legs either ... so maybe these creatures have an intelligence we do not yet know about.

Abe Babe...

I had originaly meant that as a sort of half joke, logical yet impossible theory . Maybe I have a point though
EDIT: Complete change of post...

Anyways, there are tales and such about how advanced species die out and such. Maybe thats what happens, and they become slugs... Wow.

Well yes of course but still the ideas come from the mind of Lorne Lanning and the artist interpret the words into pictures. All producers and directors have a team of artists with them but the ideas originate from the producer or director first. He is the one who needs to write the whole story out and come up with the idea first before any conceptual artist can visualise it on paper. Its not only artist drawing for a producer it involves writeing and all kinds of other important things before the conceptual work is to start. It actually involves research for the artist before he could go ahead and draw. Balieve it or not a lot of the art is based on actual things in are world and then the artist goes and interprets that into his or her own little world made up. Munch is a perfect example. Hes based on a frog and a shark. That was all researched before the designing went in. The result as we know is something rather profound. This is the job I am working towards mainly. I want to be a conceptual/ StoryBoard Artist myself someday and I am on the right track towards a career in this area. So I know a ton on how the process works in this field of work. So your right Xavier its the other artists work but what I am saying ultimately it's Lorne's idea on where the artist got their work from. All producer or directors or writers are considered artist too. Thats what I ment by that.

Here is an example a friend of mine right now wants me to do the conceptual work for a little home made animated movie he is makeing which will take about a year to do. I told him sure and now I am actually waiting for the script so I could research similar things then I could go ahead draw him my ideas. Its similar to that. Mainly what I am saying is its starts off with him writeing everything down then comes the research and then comes the art work. But it begins in the writeing.

I agree with the people who said there's only so many options for number of legs. The number of legs aren't important, it's how they are conceptualized and used that makes it unique.

Meetles, Shrykulls, Skrikits and Vykkers all have more than 2 legs. Plus there are plenty of creatures we know about, but we don't know how many legs they have - everything from bees and bats to Guardians and Mudflubs.

And I'd like to point out that by biological definition, the Raisin, Sligs, 1%ers and Slurgs all have one foot - they just don't have a leg. I dunno if that means Fleeches have two feet, there's nothing on Earth to compare it to :P
