Scrabs..........HOW THE HELL DO THEY SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has been gnawing at my brain for forever...... * picks something off of back of head *............ never mind........ just a tick. Anyway, how do they see?!!!??!!?!! I meen, do they have really small eyes that we can't see, do they scense heat, do they see using smell, I NEED ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They don't have eyes, therefore they don't see.

well, Mac has a point, but Scrabs may not need eyes to 'see' in a different form, as Alf once said. I have noticed that the front of Scrab heads is very broad and flat, which means that it could be used as sound membrane, recieving sounds and using them to 'see' via echolocation, such a Dolphins use.
Or maybe they are more similar to snakes, and have a highly developed sense of smell..
I am more in favour of echolocation however.

Yeh, that's what I think. There are lotsa species that get along fine with little or no eyesight in real life, why can't Scrabs?

I got the impression that they can sense things ahead of them using an using an electrical field that projects out of their heads. If that sounds unlikely, note that platypus' do the same thing

Ok, observe this picture:

Now Im probably wrong, but I know I had seen something that looked like eyes on them before. It may just be a discolorisation on their skin but those green slits look distinctly like eyes. Now if theyre not eyes then we could open up the idea of sonar, or an incredble sense of smell. Maybe they are like caterpillars and flies and have tiny hairs on their bodies which can sense the slightest movement in the air surrounding them.

Okay, before BigBro confuses someone, SCRABS HAVE NO EYES. Whatever he sees is just shading or something.

I think that their main sense is probably some sort of echolocation as well as another sense similar to sharks which detects electricity given off by living things. Or maybe they have a special way of using spooce to detect their surroundings.

sorry but I think those creatures can also hear... when you run while a scrab isn't "looking" at you, he turns on and run after you, so he can also hear, no?

I think you'll find that snakes use heat sensors, similar to infra-red, but it's through their toungue. A snakes toungue has little heat sensors on it, which is why they continually flick it in and out.
I don't think Scrabs would use that, I still favour the echolocation idea, as examination of the Scrab picture Big Bro posted shows a flat broad part of the head that would be ideal for bouncing and recieving sound waves.

now i could be wrong, but i have seen some scrab images that look like they have eyes. Has anyone asked Oddworld.com if they have eyes or not? anyway here are the pics i am talking about...

it could just be a bone or skin mark...not sure....

Yeh, thats what I thought were the eyes. But apparently theyre just skin discolorations.

Now that Ive seen those pictures what Im wondering is why do Scrabs have pectoral and shoulder muscles? They dont have arms so they dont really need them except for when Abe has the Shrykull power, but thats beside the point, theyre basically useless.

I like Kes's theories in this thread. Let me touch up on a few things. Now I like the fact that Scrabs are similar to that of snakes. Snakes have eyes...true, but these eyes are almost useless when it comes to there other senses. First off a powerful sent gland is found snakes and are detected via tongue flicking picking up the different scents, allowing them to "sniff" out there suroundings. Pit Vipers, example the Rattle Snake, has special pits in on the front of there head, that acts as a heat censor. Thus they use heat to find their victims and get around. Now what does this all mean to a Scrab...well lets see. I do agree with Scrabs haveing a sense of echolocation or electric feild censoring, such as dolphins and sharks possess. I also believe that scrabs have the ability to hear. Those small holes in the Scrab pic that depthsofodd showed us may be the ears of the scrab. It looks similar to that of Dinosaur ears. Another thing that could aid them may be ground vibration. Something that has been commonly found in almost any creature is the ability to pick up sounds through the ground. All in all I like Kes's theory the most. It makes alot of sense. And we should understand that it may have all these senses combine. This same question could be asked in regards to the Paramite.

You might want to make sure you know what the hell you're talking about before you start delving into the anatomical purposes of a snakes tongue.

A snake uses it's tongue to pull in air, which is then inhaled by the jacobsons organ [exclusive in reptiles/herps.]; at which point the jacobsons organ extracts scent particles from the air to get a better grasp on it's surroundings, as most snakes have fairly poor eye sight.

Vipers, well, pit vipers, and some boas and pythons use 'heat pits', which give them a bit of an infra red view. You see heat pits on vipers and boids because they need to strike fast, and preferrably once, to take down their prey.

Now you know.

I had just explained this in less detail above you're reply, Kes just made a few small mistakes. I also wanted to point out a small thing, regarding the Scrab. Think of a sharks ability to pick up electrical fields that are sent from a creature back. Also the scrabs ability to smell this must be apperent aswell. Other then that i really don't know what more to say. Has anyone else got a idea? Or theory?

i got a theory i have dubbed: "the tremors theory"

has any one seen tremors 1, 2 and 3? they are great movies, any way, crawler worms have no eyes so they sence vibrations and move twords them, and then shriekers (evolved crawlers) have no eyes but instead have two flaps on the top of their heads that open up for a short period of time, while they are open they see in a heat vision.

my conculsion: scrabs might have these flaps on their heads and they might be able to sence even the tinyest vibrations.

Exactly. Thats what I ment, and a Scrab has to strike fast too, or his prey (think elums and meeches) might get away. Cuz elums are much faster that Scrabs, I think. I mean, if yer chased by a scrab, it takes a while for the Scrab to catch up with you, while he can't jump big gaps. As for Elums, thay can run faster, and they can jump bigger gaps..

So my thoughts go to the heat-sensor theory...

Wow, theres alot of interesting theorys here about how Scrabs can see but its time I set things straight. Scarbs use eco-location to see through thier enviorments. Notice how they always screech out (it also serves as a means of communication with other Scrabs)? I heard Alf talking about it in a Dear Alf once not sure which one though?

New theory, A scrab may, or may not have ears, I don't know. But if they don't, take Xavier's example:

Now could this be because the scrab can pick up vibrations from the ground? And when you stop, it's still following you because it also has infa-red sensors in that little half-oval thing on the top of it's head, which is probobly how they communicate, using their breath to send heat signatures to each other. They know when to jump gaps, because their's either extreme " coldness " in the pit, or it's because they copy their prey's movements while running.

Just a thought.

Like many other people have said already, scrabs could use many ways of seeing:
Infra red
Sound
Radar
Magnetic fields

But on their chest it looks like they have muscles that might have joined onto arms
