Arrow Art competition... who'd be interested?

On another board I visit, the admin is holding an art competition to which all members are invited.

It happens (or rather will happen; it's only just started) once a month, and there is a different theme every month, around which submissions have to be based. The themes will vary greatly each time, apparently.

I want to know how many people would be interested. If I get enough responses in the affirmative, I'll set one up. On this other board, prizes are being offered (the guy's a comic artist, and he'll be awarding original copies of his artwork), but I don't know what I'd be able to offer you.

If it does take place, I will be both theme provider, and judge. And therefore will not be able to compete in the contests, though I may do them just for the hell of it. But I cannot compete or win.

They're a lot more serious about it in this other board... to quote from the rules: 'Points are awarded for fitting the theme into your piece, and how you expanded on it, style, uniqueness, colour, use of light and dark, etc'. It won't be as hardcore as that, though; this version will be altogether more lighthearted.

If enough people are interested, maybe we could persuade Rachel to set up an Oddworld version in FC.

Sounds cool...but can I post some 3D artworks in it? (I know my 2D stuff would lose)

If the prizes were cash or games I might consider learning how to draw.

Yes, anything goes. Computer graphics programs, photographs of your sculptures or oil paintings, scanned-in pencil, pastel or pen drawings. Any medium, dude... ANY medium. Scrape dead chooks off the road and wire them to a board as a collage. Anything.

Would the judging be a panel, one judge or a new judge every competition?

I like the idea! I would definitely participate, although there are many way better artists than me on this board.

Can't wait to get the first theme...

I'd be interested. But wouldn't a fairer method of judgement be that you collect all our drawings, then display them anonymously for members to vote for the best ones? There are ways to prevent people voting for their own artwork. Obviously to some extent it would be a system of trust, as there's nothing stopping the cliques in operation here from showing each other their drawings before the contest begins, essentially rigging the contest.

Just a suggestion. It's your idea, so you're the boss.

I think it'd be a good idea. That the members would vote for their favourite. And even better, if the works were anonymous. But then again, some artists here have such styles, which are immediately regogniseable...

I wouldn't take it too seriously anyway, but still...

Hmm... I'm pleased with the enthusiastic response, but only a total of three people have said that they'd actually participate actively in it, rather than just spectate. I was hoping for at least half-a-dozen potential contestants.

That's a good idea about the anonymous voting, Syd, but as you said, it could be easily rigged. Besides, each of the major artists has his or her (mostly her) own style... I bet most people here could easily identify, say, one of Alector's or Teal's drawings. I was thinking that people could PM or email me their entries, and I'd judge them neutrally, because I can do that when the need arises. However, people could if they wanted to post their work in progress, but that'd be up to them; they might decide not to for fear of others changing their own work to try and better it.

I'd have to agree with Syd - most of us that draw on here can spot each others styles quite easily; I can tell Rach's and Em's usually, and Claudi's is very distinctive. My style's changed a bit over summer but I think it's still clearly "mine", so...

I think with art, though, it's hard to judge a "best" drawing - like you said, you'd have to have themes. I mean, if someone drew a still-life basket of flowers and another person drew a war-scene, someone into Warhammer would likely vote on the war scene rather than the flowers as that's what they like, even if the flowers were better... Nerf. I would participate but at the moment I can't get images online, so... Heh, I could draw them then submit them in september, when I get back online properly (back at uni)

Even though some of the member's styles are easily identified, I'm sure everyone here is mature enough to choose the best peice of art, and not their friend's drawing.

I agree. And I'm not going to take it too seriously, and I doubt other members will do either...

Yeah! Finally! I smelled that such a good topic is closely to me! So I came here and started reading it. When does the competition start? What's the price? Three million would be okay. *smirks*

I would appreciate it when I could join. Jessica can scan my drawings then. I really would like to be in here.

Sounds like a good idea. But I don't have a scanner!

I would still be interested in seeing other peoples original artwork though. I have seen lots of oddworld fan art. I want to see original characters and their stories.

General Drippik! . I do not think so. You are not poor at drawing a picture.
I like "your Avatar" which you probably drew yourself .
And it is very good. (Especially selection of colors, gradation, a unique design)
