Now I know Oddworld Forums are split between religion and non-religion. Now that aside, Do you believe we have a Soul???

Now is most religion, there is the faith that we all have a Soul. And that if we a good little troupers, we will go up into a higher plane of existence. Now weather that is Heaven, Hell or Nirvana (no, not the band), or is this all hogwash and that when we die, that's it. Our life was meant for nothing. I personality believe that we have a Soul, that's my opinion, and nothing you reply to this thread will change my mind. So with that said, I need some myths disproved.

1. It is said that any energy can't be lost. It can be transferred into different types of energy, but it has to have somewhere to go. So when you die where dose all of your living energy go??? I think that the energy that is lost when dying is your soul leaving your body.

2. I have read somewhere that when you die your lifeless body loses weight. It's only something like 3-5kg, but never the less, it's lost. What happens to that weight that you lost??? I think that's you soul.

3. Why is it that some people have past life experiences, when there is no way they could have been there? I once saw this documentary once where one woman traced back her past life to the very place she was once lived. Now how did she know this if she never been here before???

4. Ghosts. Now I know this one is week, but a lot of people believe in ghosts. While there has never been proof of them, why do a lot of people believe in them??? And what are ghosts??? Lost Souls wandering around not realizing that they are dead.

There you go people; my reason's why I believe we all have a soul. If you could answer my four points, great, if not, well I guess you’re just like me.

A. Yes. I belive it's a part of our personality but I don't belive it does anything special when we die.

1. All the chemical energy is consumed by decomposers and anything else that eats the dead body.

2. If the weight you loose is your soul then why hasn't it been discovered?

1. Stored chemical potential energy in the form of your tissues. When you're alive and moving around, that "living energy" is just kinetic energy converted from chemical potential energy.

3. Don't be so gullible. She made it up.

4. A lot of people believe in a lot of stuff for which there is not one iota of tangible evidence. That doesn't make the stuff exist, no matter how hard you believe.

I believe we have a soul, but according to a theory i've just heard is that when you die your life basically happens again. In the exact way!! And thats what De Ja Vu is...thats abit of a shit really int it. However...i like to believe that we have a soul and when we die, if we have a good life we get to either go to Heaven or get Re-incarnated. If we'r bad...we go to Hell for a while (Forever if you were a really horrible person.)

I believe our saul is our personality, what makes who we are. Basically our mind. When we die it goes some place else like heaven or hell. To me death is only like being a catapiller. When you die you as your saul emerge into something new. But we phisically can't see that new body. All that is left behind is just the shell or in other words the body. When I see a grave or when I visit the cemetary to pay respects to loved ones, all that I am looking at is just a bag of bones. The person we loved or befriend is not there anymore. He or she is some place else and that is the most important thing in life. There is life after death and I feel so sorry for people who do not believe in such a thing.

in some ways i wish i belived in life after death ,but if i do not beilieve i cannot force myself to. take the recent death of my grandfather,which was made more painful for me because i do not belive in life after death , which in turn means i think i will never see him again. if i did it would be very much less painful.agree?

I believe in reincarnation by chance. Nothing with karma or anything. Anyway, I am also in belief that the soul is nothing more than an ultralongterm memory, not connected to our consciousness and subconsciousness if it should ever get detatched, thus not being 'us', but only a tiny and almost unimporant fraction of our self. Certainly not our personality.

Anyway, that's my thought. I think "I" lived before, though neither do I think it is special in any other way than being interesting, nor do I consider myself anything better like so many draconics (dragon souled) I met do, nor am I anti-human or all that shiznit. Probably because I think of the soul as what I think of it...

Don't feel sorry for me. I'm not counting on an afterlife, so I'm trying to get the most out of the only life I'm going to have.

Belief in an afterlife is people's way of coping with the harshness of mortality.

A. No. Why should we?

1. Life energy go? Thats like asking were your energy goes when you get tierd! It just ends. Energy is just air that is used by our brains, so it can function. It's not a misticle force that can will be sent to a playground.

3. I have to! You know. I really do have a before this life experience. I rember very clearly. I was a farmer in Italy. Each fall, harvesting the fields. Do you belive me just like the other jer... erhm, Truth telling old chaps.

4. Ghosts? Well. Do you belive in Ogers in the woods nearest the spot were you are? They did way back then. Just like Ghost, Dragons, Living dead.

If their is asoul we'll never know because the dead can't tell us from whence they go. Anywho, enough of that. I kinkd of am suspicious of the whole thing. I regard this as many things and file it under things we all silently fear, like living a "meaningless" life, being apprehended and having our skeletons exposed, etc. The great debate in this of course, dying and going to hell or heaven/dying being the end of it all. Secretly we want neither. We fear hell like the devil, and we all fear meaninngless nothing. At least I fear it and am brave enough to admit it. This fear motivates people do do many irrational things, its kind of like love or liquer with that angering and damning spectre of meaning and theology. I would say their is a soul, a god, and a purpose. It is Pascal's gamble, and why gamble with the no sould proposition, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't with that!(And if it isn't painfully obvious by now, all puns were meant.)

Oh, and the deja vu thing, if the universe weren't expanding constantly we would be basically reincarnated but tweaked somewhat in form and personality. I believe you are referring to the Poire Theorum (sp)

Logic says that the human concept of the soul is a side-effect of evolution. Everyone knows the desire to survive assists in evolution. Most creatures don't want to die, so believing that after death there is a new life waiting for us fills our desire to survive.

I don't know if we really do have a soul or not. How could anyone confirm or reject it? I think it's strange that the universe created us as seperate entities. Everything I perceive is being done through my brain, and everything everyone else perceives is done through a collective "you all." I just think that's crazy. But I'm not going to gamble by devoting myself to one school of thought, whether it be no belief in a soul, Christianity or Buddhism, I'm comfortable in just not knowing.

If I understood Sydney correct, i agree. But i probbebly dident so here is my view...

Peaple dont want to die. So, the want tho belive that there is a place after death. If you do belive that, I bet that the thought of death is'nt as scarry or disturbing.

Way back when. Before peaple had the technoligy to understand how the world was working, they started to wonder. But nowbody could fifure it out. How could they? So they make up god. Someone or something that created it all. It was the only thing that maid sence, and I dont blame them. But now a days, we have the tecnolegy and gadjets to proove that it is'nt how it works. Most peaple exepted that, and agreed that god was a silly thought. Those peaple, know that there is no god. But some peaple, still wont exept the fact, and still belive in god.

I don't fear things I don't belive exist. And I don't fear meaningless nothing because if I die and my 'soul' ceases to exist then 'I' won't be able to feel anything.

I don't know whether Souls exist or not. I hope, but I really haven't a clue... I'm just going to live this life as if they don't exist, and then wait and see...

As well as moisture loss, a lot of the weight loss suffered when you die comes as a result of the fact that the bowels and bladder automatically relax... :S
