I am playing Munch now.....( no spoilers, I promise)

I have Munch. Yes I have it right here in front of me. I will be getting my 2 Xbox systems next Thursday the 15th of Nov. But thanks to my trusty XBOX Debugger I will be playing Munch today. Today I say.

I also have Shrek,DOA 3,Project Gotham,Fusion Frenzy, and Azurik is coming in 2 weeks, and Halo the magnificent, all I will put off until next Thursday to play with my Brother then when he gets back to the beach here in Newport.

Well I have the Extra wide HDTV humming, and the 5.1 Dolby Surround sound blasting with ultra clarity and all sounds from Oddworld around me coming from all sides, I love it.

I have two games of about 10 hours to test as well, one is Orchid, a real classic, a act/adv game very much in the way and feel of Oddworld. A true candidate for game of all time next year. Just remember that name. Orchid, from the same people bringing us Malice. The other game is un-named, but my Brother tells me it's a lot like a MGS type game, early in developement but looking very good already. So i'll be spending time with those as well.

As for Oddworld, I will play for half an hour, I want to play it at the same time as my Brother next week and some of you lucky ones as well, so we can compare notes. It will be difficult to do, stop playing Munch, but I have strong self control, and it will be put to the test with this game. Waiting soooooo long and finally having it is pure bliss.

Back in a few with my first thoughts.

Yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..... and another yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.........

I have played Munch, for 30 minutes. First off, get Munch as soon as possible, bottomline. Work overtime, get an extra job, whatever you have to do, just get Munch on that fabulous XBOX.If not you are doing yourself a great in justice.

I've never ever ever seen a more intricately detailed and rendered intro movie as this game boasts. WOW!!!! The FMV is pure bliss. Between this and Halo's opening shots I am just overly excited.

Back with gameplay thoughts later. I will not spoil the game , so don't worry about that.

Munch is totally cool, it looks extra sweeeeeeeeeeeet on that big glowing HDTv, I'm in heaven.

*Is envious of Steel Shark*

How awesome it would be to actually have and played Munch. I wish it were me (I know, my time will come... need to be patient). I am certain it will be as stunning as what we have seen has been. I know I played a small part... but that's all it was, such a small part, and it was incomplete. And it was so long ago. You kind of get to be suffering Oddworld withdrawl symptoms... although there is good 'ol Oddysee and Exoddus.

Can't wait to hear more!!!

Abe Babe...

Hi everyone, I am back with my intial impressions of our beloved Munch and Abe game of epic proportions. I will not give out game hints or surprises, I promise, no spoilers here. Just a real in-sightful impression of my first 30 minutes of the game. I will start playing the rest of the game next Wednesday night with my Bro and the rest of you lucky ones on the 15th next thursday. We shall talk more details then.

Well my intial impressions of the game: Munch’s Odyssey has wound up on Microsoft’s Xbox., thanks in part to Microsoft’s sweet talking and in part to Sony’s blunders. The new Odyssey looks to bring all the fun of the first two games and much much more by expanding the environments, adding new characters, improving control features, and increasing the genre spectrum.

Munch's Oddysee stays true to the roots with lots of dark humor and style of the series while increasing the visual quality many times over. Do you recall that great little game Lost Vikings, well in a way Munch feels a bit along those lines. But with 10 times the size and depth. And I have just played a half hour. You will be able to conquer obstacles and solve puzzles just like the old Oddworld games but on a MUCH bigger scale. I will not give away any secrets, just trust me they are very fun and intricate in a early stage already.

There is however an interesting, analog speech feature. You can give commands, make requests and other comments to non playable characters in the game but Abe or Munch will actually say more or less depending on how hard you press the analog button. If you tap it over and over again, it's likely you'll hear the same bits over and over again. But if you hold the speech button when you talk, you'll end up with some different comments, real cool you shall see.I won't give anything away, so soon enough you shall see.

So far the game is bug free, a very tight ship. Nice job Oddworld.

Don't forget that you now control two charcters at once. No longer just one. You will feel this difference right away. More involving and deep with this as well. Also Munch and Abe will control other characters or non-organic ones as well, so a lot of work and thought is involved here. Almost like a spider web of assignments that must be conquered. I cannot wait to see the later portions of this game when they become even more involving and deep.

The new camera that has a full range of motion and is completely controlled by the computer rather then the traditional camera, which is typically controlled by the player, and regularly move's about, while still keeping the player completely in focus. Very nice camera usage, something that could be a problem in 3D games these days, but Oddworld has passed that test beautifully.

The Oddworld team has now implemented a new control scheme that will help out with this problem by steering Abe and Munch clear of any walls automatically, if the player is running along and is unable to change course the computer will turn the player so as not to be detained by the wall, excellent function. Another new control feature is aimed to decrease the frustration of the player while searching for a switch or button while in the game. Instead of having to physically touch the button or switch, all you will have to do is approach it and it will automatically perform its function. Brilliant ideas Oddworld.

Mystical Oddworld. You know that feel we all know and love within Oddworld's great world. Well I wondered if they could retain it, you know what, "they did", to my great relief.I am soooo very releived, it is a big part of the overall experience for me, and they have not strayed from it or failed me, a personal favorite thing for me within Oddworld and it's games is it's mystical feel, and thank the Gods above, they have stayed in focus of what Oddworld is.

I have been a bit concerned with the collecting of "spooce" spores . I was a bit worried that the game might take a turn towards that arcade feel with just a lot of collecting. But you are not forced to do it, thankfully. You need them for those speacial abilities, however they are everywhere, so hunting for them is not the main object, just a second option. You can also achieve goals without "spooce" powers. Very important and gives the game even more depth to it's freedom.

Munch has pasted the first test. It is everything I hoped. I was a bit worried at times, but now I am very releived, it is brilliant. All you loved of the first two games is here, the mystical feel, the quirkyness, the odd fun, the originality, the puzzles, stealth( Very important to me), the action, all that you fell in love with in the first two games 10 times over. The XBOX is one strong machine with the Geforce 3 backing it up, and Munch shows this.Effects are bright and robust, alive, and sparkle with brilliance. The animation is spot on. The textures are done with a high level of clarity. The character designs are both done with a good level poly count and very nice in-depth care to textures. The environments are also expansive and really give out a good feel of size. The game is already all I would have wanted and I just played some 30 minutes. I cannot wait to really dig in. The gamespeak is brilliant, and I have just hit the tip of the iceberg with it, it is already far more in-depth than the prevoius versions. Everyone do yourself a favor, and get an XBOX for this game, and all the other Oddworld games coming, just those games alone will be worth it.

I also wanted to mention the Fuzzles, they are your private hit-man team, real cool, you shall see. Fuzzy fuzzle you picked a cool name, you shall see.

Well I'll talk more of the game with everyone else next week, It is very difficult to wait, but in the end it will pay off.

Oddworld have stuck to there roots even in 3D, and not gone the way of the casual gamer type game. Bravo Oddworld. And Congratulations on a true masterpiece. And in closing I just want to say it is as fun a game as one could ever want, and that's what is the bottomline.

Dude, that sound incredible! I want it NOW! I'm still deciding what to do, though. That's a lot of money to be investing in a system that I'm only really sure about one game for. Your review, though... It may make my decision a little easier.

How are the controls? Does Abe still slide around when he runs? Is it still realistic in that aspect?

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you'd like the game. By the way, Munch is tied with Halo for first place in presales as of yesterday.

Not that I had any doubts, but I'm glad you can confirm that Munch is all we've ever hoped for.

I feel so bad about how selfish I'm being...I'm whining about how I have to wait "a WHOLE 8 days!!!" And I remember I was VERY whiny when XBOX got delayed a week (It's be coming out tommarow if it hadn't been delayed ). But then I think about everyone in all the other places of the world who have to wait MUCH longer.I really amdire your maturity...and your patience...and your lack of whining (unlike me )

I wish I could buy the game and read the instruction manual, but since I'm buying an XBOX bundle I don't think that'd work...

bobvilax2000: Abe walks and runs perfectly. I mean his animation is done with a bit of a quirkiness to begin with. But all the steps are rock solid, there are no glitches in his walk/run. By the way the XBOX will be offering a ton of great games already besides Munch, and Halo. And as of 2002 even more so. I could name 15-20 games as of now that if out today would be games that can match Halo, Munch, MGS2, they are that good. So really give it some thought, I don't think you will regret the purchase, in fact I know so.

Alf: Thank you, and everyone should applaud your efforts, you deserve all the praise.

Fuzzy Fuzzle : Boy are you going to love those Fuzzles your name sake. And the game is all we would have hoped for. I will wait until next Wednesday evening to play the game with my Brother when he is back in town. And then the next day we all can play this masterpiece. Now after this taste it really is difficult to wait. Just got to keep the strength up.

Monkey-Man2000: Yes you must get one. You will not regret it. I Hope you do.

Sydney
Oddworld Administrator : You are the administrator of the best game on this planet, and you do have a very glowing report from a very picky gamer. Boy will you love it.

Oddworlder: It is getting closer, and the wait is all worth it. I would love to give some more detailed in-game impressions but do not want to ruin the fun and surprises for everyone else. It is a masterpiece, and some one with a name such as your's will be in total heaven real soon.

And Oddbodd: the baddest dude and most fun oriented guy around you are going to love this game. It is all we fell in love with the first 2 times around and many times better. Same Oddworld, same mystical atmosphere, oditity, great puzzles, stealth, action, great character and creature designs, it's the real deal.

And I just want to mention that this games opening sequence is absolute brilliance in everyway. I mentioned it before, but it was worth mentioning again. Now these guys really should make a full-length feature or 10 on Oddworld. And I do know something about this.

SteelShark... I am totally blown away by your report so far... it just makes me want to play Munch even more. I guess I'm kind of at a loss for words ... as it just sounds so totally awesome!!!

A request if I may... can I post your impressions (and maybe future reviews) in an article for Oddworld-Web. You're the closest thing we have to a actual video game reporter (as myself and Sydney have to wait for the game) ... so I would love to have some kind of review of Munch for my site. Of course I'll put your name to the article. It's already up here on the forums, but I thought I would ask.

Looking forward to hearing more!!!

Abe Babe...

Well, first of, the XBOX debugger is only available to developers and other industry peoples...second off, its an actual XBOX, but the difference is that the case is transparent. So you can't really download a debugger. Sorry .But there are rumors of an XBOX emulator for the PC coming out.

BTW...Steel, can you revive the XBOX topic in OT and review some launch games? I know you want to improve your writing, and the collective masses need to quench their thirst for anything XBOX...
