Tons of next gen XBOX games and MUNCH on MONDAY

I have been playing 24 Automatons and another future mega hit Heavens beast for the past week. The future of XBOX with games like these is very promising. They are about 10 months from compleation and are both the best games available now. I have never thought of games as highly as I have these two games. With these and Orchid, Panzer Dragoon X, and Project Ego, BC, and oh about another 15 very promising titles to come in 2002 I am just overly joyed to see that games have finally gotten to the way I had always wanted them to get to. High A.I., Great graphics, fun and deep gameplay, It's all there, and these games are still in developement, wow.

Well Fasten your seatbelts, I will be playing Munch this Monday. Along with Halo, DOA3, Fusion Frenzy, Azurik, Shrek, and Project Gotham.

I have played Halo and Project Gotham for about 6-7 hours each. Halo to this point, is a true candidate for game of year, the next 1St person games will all be rated against Halo. It is superb. It also plays like a 3rd person act/adv in many ways due to the transports you control, just a real gem. Project Gotham is in many ways even more polished then GT3, a different game, but in it's own right a epic racer as much so as GT3.

So Munch and Abe will be hopping and jumping on my HDTV this Monday, "FINALLY".

SOOOO many games of higher standard now thanks to the improved machines, thank the God's above. A Extra Large HDTV, with 5.1 Dolby surround sound, a major large and plush leather recliner and Munch along with a ton of other great and fun games, I have been waiting for this for too long now.

Well got to go, Munch on Monday,Yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. See ya later for now.

I cannot believe only one response to a post that states one of us loyal Munch lovers will be actually playing the game this Monday. Is there something a bit off with everyone's thinking about Munch around here. It seems tons of negativity has set in for the past month or so. Is it bitterness that some cannot play until March or so, or that some cannot afford an XBOX right now, or is it the Sobe ads? Imean regular XBOX Forums are getting a much nicer reception about Munch then this actual Munch and Oddworld Forum. Anyways, It will be a very fun and surreal experience to be back in Oddworld and in 3D real soon now.

Fuzzy, my two XBOX bundles will arrive on the 15th, however Munch will hit retailers on Monday, so I am buying Munch seperatley, I will give one of my Munch games to my cousin then. The one I get Monday will be played for one hour, no questions asked, I will wait for the few of you that will be playing it on the 15th to be able to talk and go over our experiences at that time. I just want a taste of it now , a bit early.

See you on the flip side.........

Hi, Steel Shark! Maybe there is not much to say, only "Wow! I want it tooo!" or "You're a lucky fellow!"

Anyway, as you are one of the first persons to put hands on XBOX real games, not just demos, you could give us some reviews on the games. Would you please do that?

I'm particularly interested in gameplay features and the DVD-quality CG movies we will see in the games. would you please talk a little about Halo (intro movies and the main plot of te first level, at least).

...and sure, Munch!!

Well here are my thoughts on Halo Lampion, I know you are a big Halo fan, you will love it.

Xavier: Yes january, and you and Oddipus can come over and play all you want in Brugge, and in Aalst.

Well here I go, I'll try and explain my thoughts and experience as clear as possible. If things get a bit jumbled bare with me, I'll just start speaking of all my thoughts as they come to me. I made no notes so try and understand my thoughts the best you can.

Well to begin with I watched the World series and my Be-loved Lakers. But the whole time I itched and was going crazy to play the games on my Debugger, but I knew that if I started I would miss the Lakers, no one could break me from the controller, no one.........

Well at about 10:30 Lakers did there usual thing, Win, now it was game time, XBOX style. I fired up the old extra large HDTV, got the old 5.1 Dolby surround sound humming and leaned back in my totally plush leather recliner and got to gaming, XBOX style. When I die and go to Heaven that's where I will be, plus a total babe on my lap as well. It just does not get better.

There were four games I had a chance to play. One a 3rd person action adventure game that is a year away from compleation. Beautiful game, but only 10 minutes playable. A lot like the Malice game, but darker, more Matrix like. No name yet, but a publisher will be selected this Spring, I'll keep you posted on it at the right time, I'll just say that if it were out now I would be wanting it as much as Halo, it's that good, and it still has a year of dev time, really something. More on it this Spring.

The other two are Project Gotham and 24 Automatons. I'll get into PG later today or tommorow, and 24 Automatons as well. I played PG for 2 hours and 24 Automatons for another 2, a brilliant game, I'll get into it deep later, but now it's Halo time.

So I had 5 and half hours with Halo, extra large HDTV and 5.1 Dolby surround sound blasting all around me, total bliss.

Well to begin with here are my thoughts, excuse me if my thoughts are a bit jumbled, It was a lot to grasp and then now to explain in a perfect way. Plus I only got 2 hours sleep, but it was worth it.

Halo is beautiful, it is sooooooooooo very perfect, in all aspects it is the true next gen "GEM" of games, here is why:

You are the Master Chief, a super human soldier produced from an experimental military program, the only human the Convenant actually fear. The Convenant are the evil alien antagonists you are up against. You the Master Chief are one real " BADARSE", chemically and bionically enhanced bones and musculature, rewritten neural links - the works, Convenant watch out.

You begin by going through a few preliminary drills to get you oriented to the game’s controls. I am not going to give away the games secrets, I'll try and keep things spoiler free.

You are in a ship the "Pillar of Autumn", you have led the Covenant away from Earth, to a random location in the opposite direction of the home system, you see they want to take over Earth. So you find yourself near a giant ring construct floating between the two objects, which is about 10,000 miles in diameter. You are inbetween a Gas giant and a small moon.

But you find that the entire Covenant battle fleet had followed you and are still on your tail.

Now I must also state that the the opening sequence of the game should be watched many times over, the best I have ever seen.

The first level of the game takes place on the Pillar of Autumn your command ship, a beautiful sight in itself. It is utter chaos, the ship is being totally ripped into by the invading Convenant, fire fights are all over the place, over 25 characters on screen at any given time, ( NO SLOW DOWN ) even then. You must abandon ship. You and surviving crew members make your escape attempt, however as you are escaping from the crazed Covenant at your heels the very escape route you are taking is full of even more Convenant beasties up ahead. The opening game sequences are very much 'Private Ryun like" opening sequence, just totally frantic and with a ton of adrenaline, and pure energy. By far the best opening of any game ever made.

I'm not going to give away more, to play through the game's opening sequence cannot be described in mere words, it has to be played to be believed. Amazing.

Some more impressions are: Particle effects of a top standard, dramatic lighting effects, textures, all done very well, facial textures done in a top level manner, even down to the pores in the faces, models too are done with a lot of care, and high poly counts.

Surround mode is a definite plus in Halo, because you will hear the action from all sides, and you will react to sounds depending on where they seem to be coming from.

I love the soundtrack, a very moody ambiant sound that works perfectly with the games overall feel. Cannot be beat either, it adds to the mood and atmosphere perfectly.

The other characters are very vocal, they will react to anything happening at that moment perfectly, not one slip up. I was making my way to a location this one time to get a better view and one of my crew was coming up from behind yelling for me to haul ass because Convenant were hot on our heels, perfect A.I. No way has the A.I. ever been better in any game I have ever played, and I have played all the best. And I mean by far.

The first vehicle you come across is the 4 wheeled combat rover. Perfect physics, you just have to drive it to believe it. And many more vehicles and transports are available that give this 1st person gem even more "GOD LIKE STATUS".

Multiplayer features. There are various ways to play with a group of friends, I played co-op for a while and it is just bliss, talking to each other and shouting out instructions, just brilliant fun. Example: My Bro told me to cover him while he went around some rocks to ambush some Convenant, I shot off some rounds and the Convenant went into cover, my Bro found higher ground, he then covered me, I then got to higher ground, and we communicated and covered ground like this for quite some time, and finally took out some pesky "sniper like" Convenant this way. Otherwise they would have picked us off like stealing candy away from a baby.

The most beautiful lighting and reflection effects in a game to date as well. It just is astounding, I knew it was going to be great, but this is beyond great, and I am very picky with my games, I'm talking as picky as a gamer can get.

Another nice detail I noticed was the jeeps wheels, each wheel moves independently on the terrain. The gravel even kicks up with a perfect particle effect, all details are in this game, nothing has been overlooked, and this is first gen XBOX gaming? Wow what's next, I for one cannot wait.

Another thing I noticed is that while the game does have missions, you do have a great deal of freedom. For example you can use vehichles for attack purposes or just settle yourself in a perfect location and become a sniper, or go on attack in a ground assault style. The world is vast, it is wide open, and it is your playground, take out enemy boats in sniper mood, while perched high above a riverbed. just name it and you can do it. Total freedom.

Great weapons, I don't want to spoil the surprise so I'll name just a couple: anti-armor rocket, the pistol with laser designator, flame thrower, and the alien weapons have a iridescent shine , just great looking, you'll see soon enough. All with such great effects, and real thunder to them, you can feel the power as well as see and hear it. Perfect.

The epic sense of both story and visual presentation are unsurpassed, it really feels lke an interactive movie. I was hiding this one time, pinned in actually, and they smoked me out with flares, fun as can be, these NPC's think baby, they are very far from all the mindless drones from yesteryear, this I believe to be the biggest advantage of the XBOX'S power, even more so then the great graphics.

Mutiplayer games too will add even more to this already extra sweet package. One I loved was a multiplayer game titled "OGRE", where one player suits up in a very heavy armored suit loaded to the hilt with weapons while the other three try to kill him. Whoever kills the OGRE gets to be the OGRE. I played this for only 30 minutes. My Bro and our girlfriends went to bed at like 4 in the morning, they are not gamers, but were really loving it as well.

Lampion just get the game. Stay cool.

Hi Steel. I think the forums are just going through a brief stage of "quiet before the storm." Everyone knows that Munch will be released soon and things are going to change around here a bit. You're right, there was a bit of negativity, but that's subsiding now. Everyone's friends with each other again.

Believe me, I'd get Munch's Oddysee next Thursday if I could. But being in Australia makes things a little hard. No bitterness from me though, I've accepted that it's going to be a while before I get my hands on the next Oddworld game, just consider yourself lucky.

I always respect your comments Sydney. You and Abe babe deserve a big fat bonus from Oddworld. "DO YOU HEAR ME ODDWORLD". Calling Oddworld, get these very nice and intelligent people a major bonus for God's sake. At least some free XBOX units and Munch the game.

Did you hear me Oddworld? I hope so.

Woooo-hooooo!!!! Fantastic review, Steel Shark, thanks a lot!!!

Now I know that I couldn't even scratch the surface of Halo's universe with my twisted imagination. Man, I can see countless nights dedicated to this game, in my near future...

Ok, now we want to know about Munch - no spoilers, please - how the cutscenes blend into the real-time gameplay? How's the fell of the overall atmosphere? Can you elaborate a little about the sounds(soundtrack and environmental)?

Some more thoughts on a very important issue about Halo.

HALO in-game A.I. and Difficulty level thoughts.
Well in my 6 hours or so with Halo here are my thoughts.

The AI doesn't have any special features that are only activated on higher difficulty levels, but most of their attack options and maneuvers will increase in likelihood of appearance - plus some of their general behavior changes subtly. For example, the AI is tuned to play a more defensive game on higher levels because if it was to launch a full-fledged offensive you wouldn't stand a chance. There are many other changes by difficulty level of course.

To give you some idea of the difficulty levels, whenever I played on Normal (never Easy, aka Grandma Mode) you can pull off the most outrageous frontal assaults and basically own the entire Covenant force with style; on this difficulty level it's clear that you are the super-warrior that the story implies. But that's normal mode, and base this on the fact that I am quite good at this hobby of ours.

If I'm playing to have fun without thinking too hard, I choose Heroic. This difficulty is tailored to be an interesting challenge for skilled players, and a little light exercise for the experts. You'll be required to think tactically and understand the weaknesses of your foes - giving quarter or being reckless will still get you killed, but at this level it's still possible to be the hero if you're skilled, or you know what you're doing.

For an epic battle (or if we're playing co-op) I pick Legendary. It will take some 70 hours of continuous play to finish the game on this difficulty ( so say the dev's, and that's if you are pretty much an expert) legendary mode is a beast, trust me, I do love those challenges however. Many of your enemies will be outflanking you and firing from multiple directions, and they'll retreat and build up their shields if you damage any individual too heavily. also, if you don't know what you're doing, or you get taken unaware, it's very possible for a single covenant elite warrior to nail you (and don't talk to me about the commanders).

This means that you can't afford to try and set up a trap / kill zone like you would in myth, or doom. You'll spend a lot of your time at long range trying to take individual targets down before they know what hit them, or else getting up close and personal in an attempt to pull off the perfect assault.

It also plays rather differently to marathon's Total Carnage difficulty because you have shields that will continuously recharge if you can give them a few seconds to 'rest' without being hit. So rather than being about endurance like marathon, beating Halo is about controlling the action, striking quickly and being able to disengage if you need to... of course this isn't always possible, which means you have to look at it from another point of view: I have this buffer of shields, which means that I have about six seconds to clear the room. Two grenades, one half-charged plasma pistol, one clip of assault rifle ammo, four elite warriors on the other side of this door. Go, it's time to rock.............

With Shrek being 80+ hours, and Azurik being 100, Munch about 60, and now this game with all kinds of replayability the XBOX sure is showing more than great graphics, they are showing longevity as well. Why should great things end I always say. And the A.I. still to me is the biggest improvement of all with the XBOX. I already love it.

So what level will you play, Grandma mode ( Easy), Normal, Heroic, or Legendary mode ( Best played when in Co-op mode).
