Xbox and Multi-Zoning

This question is probably aimed more towards Steel Shark because he is in the industry, but I have a query about whether Xbox will have multi-zoning capabilities.

As in will it be able to play DVDs from other zones other than the US zone... and will it be able to play PAL games as well as NTSC?

I read somewhere that it did, but it may have just been a rumor.

Although I am definately getting my Xbox from the US, I am just concerned that once the Australian version comes out I won't be able to play the games from over here. So I couldn't rent games from the video store or play any local DVDs that I borrow from friends.

In Australia our government made all the DVD manufacturers stop putting multi-zoning in because they were afraid of people buying them overseas (generally cheaper). Although you can buy video recorders that play and record in NTSC... talk about contradicting!

I don't think the zoning issue is a problem in the US cause the US is cheaper than anywhere anyway. So my hope is that I won't have this problem with a US Xbox.

I hope someone can shed some light on this for me.

Hi Abe Babe, I don't like that stop multi-zoning phrase. As of now there will be no problem playing other zone games on an American XBOX.This has been confirmed to me by a reliable source.

However it still can change. If so you will have to purchase American games over the net. This will be the only way anyways until XBOX comes out in you're neck of the woods. But if this stop multi-zoning does occur, there will be a chip that will be out by the time Europe and Australia XBOX games become available, don't forget you will have 4 months of gaming time already put in.This chip will counter the stop multi-zone chip.It will be about $25-$35 dollars if it must see the light of day.

For the most part the American games come out quite a bit sooner than Europe and Australia, so it's worth an American purchase.Cost will be the same even with shipping costs for an American XBOX game compared to oversea games.

You're only real loss is the rental games if you were to not get a chip or converter by pass. But rentals are usually just to see an extra game have some fun for a few hours or a couple days. What you really care about are those top end 15-20 games a year.I mean the games are longer and longer these days, just look at MO and my code-named Heavens beast, they're 200+ hours each. That's about 5 months of gaming at about 3 hours a day. How many games can you really get to anyways. You just got to pick the best of the best. Why play so-so games, when you could be playing the elite ones.

Now if you have not already heard of this place called webgamezone.com, go check it out. They only rent to the U.S.A. as of now. PSX2, Dreamcast, but Gamecube and XBOX will follow when they hit.

Maybe you can have the games sent to a relative in the States and they can forward them to you in Australia. Then you send them back to the company when you are finished. The cost will be about $30 a month for you overall with the extra shipping. But you get 3 games at once.Well here's some of there sales pitch:

The RedOctane G3 Rental Program is a great value that offers you amazing benefits you won't get anywhere else. Stop going to your local video store and start enjoying the convenience of having games delivered to you!

Anyway's you have options, don't worry about it, as of now you can play other zone games on an American BOX, and if not there will be a BY-PASS chip available for certain. So don't worry you're pretty little head over it. Play the American games this November and when March 2002 gets here we shall see what can be done at that time. 100% there is always a way. See ya Babe of gaming....

Many thanks for the information Steel Shark. This is great news as far as I am concerned... whether the Xbox be able to play games from different countries or if I can get a chip for it.

Usually I just like to rent games if I am unsure if they are a game I will like... so before buying I try it out.

The rental program you mention though is awesome... because usually when you rent games you only can do so for a week or two (if you rent for much more you may as well buy the game), it's certainly a good idea.
