He's a democratic socialist, which literally just means he's a democrat that believes that accessible healthcare and education are a fundamental right that the government is responsible to provide to it's citizens. That's it. In his words:
:
I think [democratic socialism] means the government has got to play a very important role in making sure that as a right of citizenship all of our people have healthcare; that as a right, all of our kids, regardless of income, have quality childcare, are able to go to college without going deeply into debt; that it means we do not allow large corporations and moneyed interests to destroy our environment; that we create a government in which it is not dominated by big money interest. I mean, to me, it means democracy, frankly. That’s all it means.

Bernie's been very true to his viewpoints and political standings since the dawn of Bernie, and all of his stances are for full legal equality across the board. I can see where wariness comes in, my mom expressed concern not knowing Bernie's history, believing he will be the next Hitler since he can definitely garner the power and the US is at a reasonably low point in it's history so nows as good a time as ever for a figure like that to show up, but considering his entire life he's been involved in nothing but pro-equality movements, showing a complete and accurate understanding of economics, and pointing out when the US was about to make an awful decision with a track record of being surprisingly right, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt by far.
