Abe's Exoddus remake might come out soon!

I don't know if someone already posted about this, but I just found out. It looks like an Abe's Exoddus remake might come out EDIT: "eventually" , and another oddworld game after that!

If you go by some really rough estimates, New 'N' Tasty could have made about £9,995,000 gross, which isn't too fucking bad really. It doesn't seem like a new game is impossibly far away if AEHD is a success commercially too.

If AEHD makes as much as AOHD that's still not a load of money for a game. I mean maybe it is if you listen to Kickstarter. I don't know.

It would really depend on how expensive it was to make. Obviously a game that costs millions to make isn’t a huge success if it only makes a couple million gross, but if you got that same gross for a game that only cost a few hundred thousand it’s a big deal.

I’m not privy to all the expenses JAW had, but considering the size of team they had relative to the average game studio size plus the fact they were working with a relatively inexpensive game engine and would have been able to save some production costs by recycling old assets, NnT could well have been pretty cheap to make compared to big budget games. Nearly £10 million gross could very easy dwarf the cost of production.

Yeah I figured that, but just in case anyone else didn't know, I thought I'd post it. I remember when I first heard about New N Tasty, I was hoping they would do one for Exoddus too. I finally bought an Xbox one a couple months ago, and completely forgot about Oddworld, until it was on the Sales with Gold page for $8. I'm really loving the game, but I know when I beat it, I'll want to play Exoddus next, but it looks like that might be awhile. I just wasn't sure if they were even considering making another one until I looked it up.

Don't forget about the time New n' Tasty was free on PS+. OWI would have been given a sum for that promotion too. Whether this would have been more or less than regular sales during that period, who knows. But those kind of promotions seem to bank heavily on increasing the audience/target market, sometimes at the expense of short term profit.

Seems to work best when a sequel is on the cards regardless, so more people are familiar with the franchise and enjoyed it enough to buy second time round. By virtue of taking that promotion, in my opinion OWI were investing in the next game from the get go. Seems fair to say the expected profits for the next game (now known to be an Exoddus remake) are in excess of New n' Tasty's due to this greater market.

I suppose the question isn't so much 'did New n' Tasty make enough to fund AEHD?', as it is 'Did New n' Tasty under perform so badly that we should change our plans and not make another game?'

I'm confident OWI would be able to fund another game

But everything takes time to get off the ground

Is it my bad memory or did Lorne once say something about NnT along the lines of, "I don't want to crowd fund AOHD because it's not a $1m-$2m dollar game, I'd need about $5m..."??

I don’t remember the exact figures but I do remember him discussing crowdfunding not being a good fit for them. It’s totally possible that’s what he was expecting to spend though, he may have said that.

Crowdfunding is not a very good choice for bigger games. It's not popular enough yet. Take for example Psychonauts 2. It got almost 4mln dollars and it wasn't enough by itself, they had to have another two sources of funding (DF's own funds + an external partner) just so they could make the game.

I also asked on the OWI Twitter page, and they said they've announced that they are working on Exoddus, so it still might be awhile before it comes out, but at least it seems like that is their top priority for now, which is really exciting for me. It was already posted here on the forums, but Lorne talked about the future of Oddworld in an interview for Nintendo Life recently too.

And when the game comes out and you don't agree with their analysis, they'll say 'But it has more pixels! That means it's better!'. And you'll disagree, then come back here and complain. But they won't have to defend themselves because they've technically been totally honest and you weren't specific enough with you wanted.

Ask them yourself lol, I'm curious how they would respond. I really like New N Tasty. It didn't have the same dark tone as the original AO, but it still was a lot of fun, and I like some of the changes they made, and the game looks amazing. For me, I think they'll do a good job with the Exoddus remake, and I'll probably have fun playing it, but it probably will never be as good as the original, which is pretty much expected.
