My Second Interview With Lorne Lanning.

I could give a full and complete timeline of all the reasons why this took more than a year to get published, but it would make this post almost as long as the interview itself. Please accept my apologies.

I'd also like to thank Wil for his excellent job in laying it out and finding the images. And thanks to the various proofreaders for spotting errors and not letting any information slip.

Enjoy!

Fantastic. Interesting to hear him address the issue of not selling out. I think the indie revolution will be a great way to spark the new wave of Oddworld games. Especially considering the series always was about social and economic motivations.

Great interview! I can't remember if I ever sent of a question to Lorne. It must of been a while ago.

I was very interested in the Khanzumers. I've actually never heard of them until now and to hear that they are enormously fat Mudokons just makes me laugh.

Awesome! As I got further in I read and saw a lot of stuff I didn't know that was beyond the usual mere reiteration of Oddworld interviews. Some great new concept art I haven't seen too, like Nolybab. Also, the hint towards the higher power beyond the Glukkons, the guy's I've always thought were the ultimate big cheeses, are actually the middle men in this global industrial game. Good stuff, Nate. Well done.

Time to start planning for the next interview - should be ready by, what, 2015?

But in all seriousness I always love the deeper interviews with Lorne. They always pull out a ton of interesting stuff that’s never been in the game. Really makes me want to see the later Quintology installations made.

And my questions got answered!

Really nice interview, some very insightful stuff there! Getting a better idea of what Oddworld is like is cool, and I've never seen the Nolybab concepts before.

It's interesting what Lorne said about the Khanzumers being partly Mudokons. I always had this idea of what a twist it would be if it turns out the big bad of Oddworld, right at the top of the chain above the Magog Cartel and everyone else, is actually this evil corrupt suit-wearing Mudokon who turned his back on his culture/species.

It was his betrayal that sold his people into slavery and began corrupt culture. Mudokons, ironically, are both the victim and the cause of the capitalism on Oddworld- Abe not only has to save his species, but right the wrongs done to the world by them and restore a natural spiritual balance. It would give Abe's journey a redeeming quality, like how Darth Vader, despite all his evil, is the one who brings back balance to the force by killing the emperor.

Weren't we specifically told there wouldn't be?

Also, I love the stock and share forecast in some grimy boardroom using a decapitated mudokon. That for me epitomises Magog Cartel industry.

Yes, I remember reading a quote from Lorne once saying the quintology doesn't have a nice ending. Not too sure how I feel about that- it sounds like Abe and the other Oddworld heroes will die, and I don't like it when that happens! I guess time will tell.

The more Lorne rambles on about the universe the more I really want to see those films realised. Hopefully they add some references to the greater Oddworld universe in New n' Tasty.

The thing about the secret Mudokons was interesting. So, there's actually more than 99 in the game? Where the dick do we find them?

I think it’s just a thing with the Temples where if you complete a trial that contains a secret Mudokon area without also lighting the flintlock, it’ll count the Mudokons you saved but will also allow respawn the same Mudokons when you re-enter, allowing you to rescue them again.

There is a bug, that I've never been able to replicate, that screws up the rescue counts if you backtrack through the first RuptureFarms level in the right way. I don't believe there are genuinely more than 99 Mudokons you can lead through bird portals, not least because in 15 years no one has ever been able to list >99.
