Rupture Farms level overview screenshot merge

Something I threw together just now in Photoshop. It gives an interesting view of the first part of the Rupture Farms level, and it's interesting to note how some screens fit seamlessly next to each other, while others have really odd bordering. (Has this been done before, I wonder?)

I think sidescrolling would work well in the HD remake, if that's what they end up doing. Viewing AO this way makes Rupture Farms seem like a larger place.

Amazing how short the level looks when you put it together like that.
I also just realized some serious inconsistencies in lighting and structural placement.

That's very cool. Thanks for sharing. It actually brings up the topic of "smooth scrolling" again. Those bonus areas underneath the main path would work pretty well as one screen that would slowly move downwards, rather than flick-screen. Although I could be wrong.

Nice one.

I've always found the way the screens don't really merge together kinda stupid.
one screen your on the bottom floor, next screen after loading your on top?

I wonder if they'll fix this in AO: HD

You can use my level editor if you wanna see how the screens fit together. E.g in the one you've made the story screens are to the right with a 1 screen gap between them.

If they make it smooth scrolling it will even more apparent.

i did this for the whole game when constructing the layout for my project. it really gives the sense how vast some areas are but how tiny others are even though in the game they still felt prety big

It could be that each screen had its camera adjusted upwards or downwards slightly to keep the more used areas more centred. For example, you know the screen featured here with the electric barrier? The upper platform has nothing on it. It's just the starting point for that screen - the player wants to focus on the lower platform, so the camera is panned down a little so that the lower platform is slightly more centred. It's only adjusted by like 10pixels, but this can make a difference. Instead of cramming everything into the bottom of the screen, they slightly raise the floors towards the centre... now someone's gonna come along and prove me wrong :P

EDIT: A better example are the screens with the elevating platforms. The camera is adjusted to get all the elevating platform on the screen. There's only a lower platform too so its shifted upwards towards the centre.

It's quite easy, you could do it too if you have the PC version of Exoddus and Photoshop. It just takes a bit of work. For each screen, simply screencap it (PrintScrn button), minimise AE, paste it into MS paint, save it as a sequence of images (00.bmp, 01.bmp, etc.), then later copy each one into photoshop, place the level screens together, reduce the size of the image, and you're done.

(I would do it, but I can't be bothered - You probably could get a program that saves screenshots automatically to lesson your workload though)

(Oh and I'm actually pleased that someone did this already - I'd be surprised if nobody did)

Search Fan Corner for 'ASP'. The Abe Screen Project is a half-finished version of what you need.

Nice job. Wouldn't conisder it quite "seamless", though - like Sekto said, there are several inconsistencies with the lighting and structuring.

If you could fix those, I'd be very impressed.

Good work, nonetheless.

Those are the game screens as they fit together. Unless he edits the images, that's the best that they can be.

I was searching for that damned thread and couldn't find it even through doing a custom search in Google (search is broken here) - Although it seems it doesn't contain any screenshots of AE. It would have saved me the trouble of taking screenshots of AO. :P The point of my thread wasn't to simply post them, though.
