Happy Portal 2 on PS3

Is a win!
If you buy portal 2 on the ps3 you get redeem codes for portal 2 on PC and mac(you can redeem it at your steam account). When you are playing on ps3 you can play with PC and macs users AS WELL as cross chat with them! You can also connect your ps3 account to your steam account , So you can have access to games saves on your ps3 to PC/mac and more!
Some links.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj4ONIoqpJg
http://www.destructoid.com/buy-porta...t-191930.phtml

I was also reading the net and it seems that some PC/mac users are buying the ps3 version just for the redeem codes! No word about 360 users getting this anytime soon...
So what do you guys/girls think about this deal? do you think Valve will release the L4D series on ps3 too?

I doubt 360 users will get it unless there's enough backlash against it. Valve kind of has to impress PS3 users after Gabe Newell called the PS3 a total disaster, comparing it to the Gamecube and calling it "the next Sega Saturn".
Plus, this way, he's making Sony and PS3 users happy and also converting some PS3 users over to PC, which is where Valve wants them.

I doubt anyone will be converted to PC gaming by getting a free game, I aslo doubt the majority of PS3 players will bother with this. Either way really cool of Valve, but as a 360 only owner it makes me sad.

Of course it's not guaranteed to convert everyone but imagine it like those free samples you get of certain foods in a supermarket.
Some people will try it and hate it. Most people will try it, think it's okay but won't like it enough to go out and buy the actual product. But there will be a small percentage that will love it and go pay for more. That small percentage of extra customers buying your product will recoup the losses you made by offering free samples and bring in more income than before.

To put this is Valve's terms; some PS3 users will get the redeem code but will never use it. Most will use the redeem code, maybe play the PC version a little but ultimately go back to their PS3. And then there will be that small percentage of PS3 users that will use the redeem code, complete Portal 2 on PC and then buy more and more games through Steam. This small percentage of people will (by buying more Steam games) recoup the losses Valve incurred from offering Portal 2 for free and bring in more income after these recouped losses.

You're comparing a $5 piece of food to up to hundreds of dollars for upgrading a computer. Anyone that has a PC that can handle these new releases, is already a PC gamer. No one will dump out the money to convert just because Portal 2 was that much better on PC than PS3.

Maybe I wasn't specific enough in my first comment. Obviously the people that have to upgrade their computer will be in the "never redeems code" category unless they have some disposable income to spare and were already thinking about it. People in the customer bracket that eventually use Steam more because of the redeem code will be people that already have decent computers.
It's likely that the people that already have decent computers but that bought Portal 2 on PS3 will be gamers on mostly on PS3 and rarely on PC.

Promotions like these almost never change the opinion of even a quarter of the targeted consumers, but even a small increase in income from a promotion means you're getting more profits than you had before.

I bet the people buying and then selling the PS3 version to get an essentially free PC version will negate any profit from this promotion.

There will be some but these people will most likely already have Steam accounts if they have the foresight to do this, which means that they either have already bought Steam games before or they are likely to in the future.

I just realised, I'm not sure why I'm quoting you if I'm commenting right after you...

Given the choice, I tend to buy stuff on Steam rather than PS3 store simply because Steam has good sales and you can get stuff cheaply. PS3 store kinda sucks like that.

I agree. I only play valve or any fps games on PC because they're best suited there.

I could cope with Portal on the PS3. It didn't feel as if it needed the precision of a mouse.

I hope for the sake of the gameplay that this feeling is absent in Portal 2.

If things like this catch on, like PS3 <> PC Steam, I might actually be pursuaded to trade my 360 in for a PS3 in the long run. We'll see how it goes, it's a very nice development in any case!

I'm still getting it for the 360. I have no intention of playing it on a pc, and I don't play multiplayer on the PS3.

It turns out it's not two separate games, it's giving you the chance to play your Portal 2 game in two places. Kind of like that Steam Cloud thing, it's the same game but no matter where you play it, you have your save files, etc.

Interesting, I wonder how they will verify you still own the game on PS3 though, from what I understand people can still buy the game on PS3 and immediately sell if its something like a one time use code.

Judging from the article it seems that they're essentially running Steam on a PS3. The reason that the Xbox 360 doesn't have it yet seems to be that Microsoft just doesn't like giving up control.

:
Which of course brings up an obvious question: was this option also offered to Microsoft? "It is achievable from a technical standpoint, yes," he told Ars. Allow us to speculate for a moment and say that Microsoft most likely doesn't like third-parties using their own online tools, nor would it agree to giving up any control of patches or updates, an issue that has long been a sticking point between the two companies.

It's because Sony are a lot more open with online content than Microsoft are and allowed Valve to develop Steamworks for the PS3. (note: don't search for 'steamworks' on Wikipedia. At least, not whilst there is anyone standing behind you)

Also, I thought this was an interesting view on the difference between MS and Sony, from a guy who works at Telltale Games.
