Just wondering, are there some members here that have smartphones or are going to get one in a not too distant future?

I don't have one, but I do work in a Call Centre that services them. If you're asking because you'd like some input on what to get, get something with Android. It's the only OS that I have not heard a single word against from customers. On the other hand, one Android Owner that called didn't have the facility to check for when the new firmware update was going to come online, instead calling in to ask.

iPhone 4 is an error-encrusted monstrosity. Don't even touch one. You could get cancer. Windows 7 Phones are similarly terrible, but in that "so bad it just barely works" way that all Windows crap does.

Symbian or Android, bruddah.

EDIT: Symbian is the Nokia smartphone OS. As with all things Nokia, it's totally adequate, but not particularly special. I plan on getting a cheap Nokia/Smartphone.

Even with my slim fingers it's just too clumsy. I mean, I play on my sister's sometimes, and that's ok. But definitely not something I want for myself. Games are the most important feature on my phone.

If I get an iPhone I'm installing Linux on it. It'll be unreliable, but at least it'll be PC unreliable.

You know, if that's your only need, I can see why you'd say that.

I really used to think that all these multifunctional phones are useless. I mean I have a computer with internet. I have games. I have a calendar.
But for some people, multi-functional phones are an essential part of their lives. Specially if they don't have enough time to spend at home, or don't always have the room for a bigger calendar.
Having a convenient phone to remind you of your meetings, errands, contacts with access to the internet for quick email-lookup is extremely important for some.

So yea... They aren't necessary, but they make life a little easier for those who benefit from them.

Good for all of you. Seriously, Smartphones are not nearly as fantastic as people think. They eat through your money with expensive plans (admittedly not a big deal depending on your income) and tend to be a lot more fragile than Normal Phones. I plan on getting either a generic flipphone or a cheap QMD.

I don't even use my ordinary phone very much. I have no need for a "smart" phone. Which is besides the point, since few people do. I have no desire for one. I'm not saying they're bad or anything, but if I do get one it'll be because of disposable income (hah!) rather than anything else. Unless there's a killer app on the horizon that renders my life more meaningless than usual without it.

i've had my phone for about 3 or 4 years. an Orange K800i. its reliable, isn't contract and i've gotten used to it.

i've got a spare phone that's coming up to 5 years old, too, just in case this one decides to cark it. that one's very basic.

Yeah um..that's like 2% of the people who buy them even though the commercials act like everyone is a fucking CEO and needs what they offer. Eh it doesn't matter though whatever people are into i guess.

It's not about killer apps. It's about a large number of smaller apps that make life mildly easier.

For instance, I have an app called TramHunter that tells me, down to the minute, when a tram will arrive at my nearest stop. It's not just telling me the timetables - all the trams have GPS in them and it's almost always accurate. This means that I can judge when to leave my office or home to catch the tram without having to wait too long. Also it tells me when a tram has been delayed and I should just start walking or when it's coming soon and I should run to catch it.

Other apps I like: Aussie Weather Radar shows me the local rain map of my city. Various Wikipedia apps give me information quickly. Google Maps means I don't get lost. Google Calendar with integrated reminders means I don't miss out on shit.

Thus, my life is easier since I got my smartphone.

Well... Kinda true. But then again, there are so many things we don't need. Like micrpwaves, external harddisks, electrical egg beaters and so on. But for some it just significantly eases their life. Also notice that I said multi-functional phones and not smartphones necessarily. Anything goes.

Personally, I think it's a bit much money to give for such phones, and I truly don't need more than just being able to call and SMS. Though games are an essential part for me!

My sister who used to love her smartphones, has moved beyond the crush-phase and comfortable-phase and has now moved to the frustration phase

He latest FB updated consisted of her complaining about how useless and fragile these phones are lol.

I have an Android phone, which is my second smartphone after having had a Windows Mobile phone for a bit. Holy shit what a relief that switch was.

iPhones are still meh in my opinion. iPhone 4 has nifty features, sure. But with a recent update my own phone can do every single thing the iPhone can. Only thing you buy extra with the extra cash is bragging rights, like the 5 million fuckers who also bought one.

Android is pretty much the only way to go right now if you want to stay within a decent budget. It's stable, regularly updated, very active market and is extremely user friendly.
