Non-mainstream games and why you like them

I'll start with an oldie. Caesar III, because it's just hours and hours of RTS fun, although incredibly frustrating at times.

In-game screen:

What about you OWFers?

I still play Simcity 4 from time to time and as a hobby/interesting thing to look back on later, keep a 'city journal' about the city I'm currently working on:

If you like building stuff from scratch is a very fun game indeed.

Of course, Havoc also likes fucking animals and children. And fucking children while wearing an animal suit.

There's got to be a mod for that somewhere.

Although I'll wager Gary's not behind it.

I have started (well, it was a month ago) playing World of Goo. I like games where the gameplay is different than normal games. Anything that isn't BLAMBLAMBLAMBLAMBLAM, next stage, BLAMBLAMBLAMBLAMBLAM is usally good.

It's not that I take a while to catch on. It's that I think you're fucking disgusting and pathetic, so I see no real need to stop. Also, it's more of a statement than a joke.

As far as negrepping me for 'making a joke about children', you're the one who openly admitted to fucking a fifteen year old. Not I, sir. Not I.

Ah I thread in my element...

At the moment the newest non-mainstream game I have aquired is (Long name alert.):

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzonoha Vs The Soulless Army.

(Not sure if that's spelt right )

You basically play as a Private Detective in the 1920's, in japan, who can summon demons, (RPG)
What more do you want?

Talking about oldie games Bullfrog made some brilliant games: Dungeon Keeper 1+2, Theme Hospital, Theme Park and Populous the Beginning (3). Damn you EA for absorbing Bullfrog and cancelling Dungeon Keeper 3.

Also Ceaser 3, the Civilization series, Seven Kingdoms, Starcraft and Sim City where good too .

@Taco:
What's the name of the game in that picture? It looks similar to a turn based game I used to play with my sister but i've forgotten the name .

I play these games by Oddworld Inhabitants, they're fairly non-mainstream....

Braid immediately comes to mind. It takes a platforming game and dicks it about with time manipulation.

Ahh, I loved Caesar III. But I was closer to the Egyptians, so I liked Pharoa more. I also liked Zeus, even though it was rather corny. I'd like to try Emperor.

Some of my other favorites are damn old. A game from Simon and Schuster called "Nile" where you ravel around Egyptian temples, solve puzzles, and play a role in the mythology.

Another one, Beyond Atlantis. Also incredible. Beautiful, artistic worlds depicting the ancient mythologies of Tibet, the Aztecs, China, and Ireland. The puzzles are hard as fuck though. I had to resort to a game guide.

And Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Interesting characters in a beautiful world wth a pretty good story to match.

Can't wait to finish these when I get back.

I see, the only heroes of Might and Magic, I have played is the one on ps2.

I remembered the game me and my sister played. It was Age of Wonders.

O.O
Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Munch's Oddysee, Stranger's Wrath .
I believe they are making two Citizen Siege games.
There are links at the top of the site.

Same, I can't believe I forgot about Pharoah.

I used to play crystal Chronicles with my brother and sister back when we had a GBA each. Actually i've just realized I never finished it.

Wow I didn't know that. The only SMT games i've ever seen are the ones that are second hand. I had never heard of the series until I found DDS 1+2 (bought) and Lucifers call/Nocturne (not enough money for all three .)

I guess that's what happens when you live in a small english town that believes that Runescape is the greatest RPG in the universe .

Ceasar III was an absolute favourite of mine back then. Then I met Pharaoh. A bit slower paced because of the agriculture depending on the Nile floods and the monument building which doesn't consist of a simple click, but it was sure fun.

If we can consider post-DotT/Monkey Island point&click games non-mainstream, I'd also mention Woodruff & the Schnibble of Azimuth and The Neverhood. I don't think they are widely known, but they were entertaining. I guess the necessity to go through an insanely long corridor just to pick up a cassette at the end, then go back is reason enough for someone to steer clear of The Neverhood. That's probably the only frustrating part of the game though.

Yes, AOW is hard to find. I only have the demo myself. I hope to one day acquire it, along with Rival Realms, Majesty, the Monkey Island series and the Broken Sword series.

Age of Wonders was sweet, with the cute giant frogs and all. I don't play it much anymore, but the shortcut on my desktop reminds me of my childhood.

Apart from the OWI stuff, the non-mainstream games I are play Darwinia and Armadillo Run. But I don't really know that much about what makes a game mainstream and not. Was Worms World Party mainstream? Portal? Morrowind?

Dungeon Keeper 1+2,
hooray for dungeon keeper 2! i've had that for years. it stoped working a year ago =( (probably wouldn't work on vista anyway).

also, is the space channel 5 series mainstream by our standards? I liked sega superstars tennis (even though everyone else hates it) and the katamari series (at least other people like it).

You're right Fili, never heard of them. A few more that I left out originally: STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and I don't know if you'd consider that mainstream or not, but it seems to be a FPS that not many people have played.

I also remember having some fun with Anno 1602 and Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis (one of those DOS point-and-click things)

Anno 1602, good times. That game introduced me to Greensleaves , Which I shove on loop whenever I play it.

Not sure if this is non mainstream : Captain Planet and the Planeteers on the Amiga, I spent a long time on that when I was very small.

Pizza Syndicate and Pizza Collection 2, They where good.
