Okay, I'm impressed. You spotted that one quickly.
For those who don't know, the rep power is the amount that the receiver's rep increases by when you give posrep. Negrep subtracts half of the rep power.
Previously, the rep power was calculated as follows:
1 point for joining
1 point for each year the person has been a member.
1 point for each 1000 posts.
1 point for each 100 rep points.
EDIT: Removed the bit about getting a point for being a mod and added the bit about getting a point for joining.
If you were keeping track of recent repping activity, you'll notice that the people at the top of the list have been increasing in leaps and bounds. The main reason for this is that certain people had absolutely massive amounts of rep power. What's more, there were huge gulfs between the people who had a small-medium amount of rep power and the people who had huge amounts. This is because as people gained more rep, their rep power grew enormously.
For example, I have been a member for 7 full years, I have more than 7000 posts and 2067 rep points. Thus, my rep power was 1 + 7 + 7 + 20 = 35 = fucking huge.
We didn't notice this when we first set up the rep system because everyone had pretty much no rep. Now, as the field has spread out more, it meant that pretty much all the rep given out (in terms of points) was attributable to a very small number of members. At the same time, the actions of people with only a handful of rep power was almost meaningless in the wider scheme of things.
So, we decided to shake things up a bit. The rep powers are now calculated as follows:
1 point for joining
1 point for each year the person has been a member.
1 point for each 1000 posts.
1 point for each 500 rep points.
This even things out a lot and also puts a higher weight on a member's history with the forum rather than simple popularity. For myself, my rep power has more than halved, to 1 + 7 + 7 + 4 = 19 points.
This only affects reps given out from today onwards. Your current rep level is not changed because each individually awarded rep takes in to account the giver's power on that particular day.
Anyway, in summation, things should be a lot fairer now. If anyone has a problem with this, just let me know. I'm not promising I'll do anything about it, but I won't delete your posts either. Probably.
