Studies, Drawings, and Reflections

I figured it was high time I posted up some of my non-Oddworldian drawings; one needs feedback for all of one's work. So here's a drawing of a mermaid I did recently. I used a style that I've long admired but never really tried; that is, a drawing in black, white, gray, and a thin strand of red running through it. I had a lot of fun experimenting with it.

I like it. The hair looks really realistic, with those extra wispy strands coming out at the side. =D
I'd very much like to see more of your non-Oddworld works.

Happy

wow !!!

great work here crazysteef

It's very well drawn, really cool ! especially the water and the hair. I would recommend to put a little light effects in the hair, that makes everything even more realistic

(now I want to try out this style too, the red hair-band is really an eye-catcher!)

Smileys!!

Thanks GlacierDragon! The hair did take me forever...I'm glad you think it turned out well.(^_^)

Thanks Moosh! I'm glad you think the hair looks realistic.

Thanks Scipionyx! I'll be sure to pay attention to light effects in the future; little details like that really can make or break an image. I can't wait to see your experiments with this style!!!!!

This image is a study I did of sabertooth tigers, although I personally prefer their scientific names of Smiledons. Something about that word really suits, and at the same time kinda doesn't, those carnivores. In any case, I hope you enjoy the image.

Cool drawings! You seem to have a pretty good grasp of rendering texture and such. I would work on structure though, if you build something up first by making 3-dimensional shapes to make sure it makes sense, it ends up coming together a whole lot better. The mermaid for example looks really nice, but if you took away her hair that tail would be bent at a really strange angle. Just something to consider.

Still, good stuff. Keep it up!

P.S. Just to say, "light effects" are anything but realistic. Drawing from life really helps you understand how light and shape work together. If you get a sketchbook and just start drawing random things you see (in real life) when you're bored, your understanding of objects will increase tenfold.

...so you say that water doesn't reflect the light of the sun and that hair is also not shimmering when light shines on it? There are differences between uhm... materials... some reflect the light and some others don't -with light effects I was meaning nothing else than to not only use black to draw the shadows but also use something to light up some places that reflect the light
sorry if I used wrong words

No, I know how light works. I'm just saying, the phrase "light effects" usually means some sort of idealized super-exaggerated anime effect that has nothing to do with reality. I mean, when was the last time you saw hair shimmer? In a shampoo commercial. It really doesn't tend to happen in real life.

But yes, some sort of light-based rendering would be quite nice.

And for the record, everything reflects light, save for anti-matter.

Thank you so much, everyone!! I'll be sure to do more Smiley studies and put them up here

Here's another cat I drew. Well, its actually a reproduction of a drawing of a cat done by my hero in the arts, Durer. I love his style, and want to semi-adopt it for my own (well, his combined with a couple of other artists') I couldn't really tell if its a lynx or a bobcat, so I'll let you make that decision yourself.

And now, just to get it out of the way, I must ask; does anyone know how to multi-quote on here? I'm useless with computers!!

I like it! I think it's a lynx.

Multi-quoting? You click the icon at the bottom of the posts you want to copy and then click 'Go Advanced' on the reply thing at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks a bunch! The mystery cat is somewhat lynxish, but seems to have the build of a bobcat...but more importantly, GlacierDragon, thank you so much for telling me how to multi-quote. I really appreciate the help (^_^)

I know I'm asking a lot of dumb questions before I put up my next artwork, but could any of you tell me how to post something over from Deviantart? This information would make my life a lot easier...thanking you in advance.

As a matter of fact, there's no object (in this world, at least) that is completely black, so even the darkest looking things reflect some light.

I didn't know that. I should have said black holes instead, though I don't know if they would actually be classed as objects or just spacial disturbance things.

Gankutsuou!!!!!!!

A good question indeed; the definition of an object is long and ambiguous.

I'm so excited right now!!! I finally discovered colored pencils, and truly feel that I've found my medium to color in; words cannot describe my gratitude to the gods of art.

This first colored pencil work is a fanart of the satanic hero of an anime I'm currently obsessed with, called Gankutsuou; The Count of Monte Cristo: yes, this blue-faced man is none other than the Count of Monte Cristo from this sci-fi version of that great classic, and while he's still after revenge, he's now a alien/vampire/demon-man, and has the best goatee I've ever seen.

Heheh me too, especially if the subject in question has an awesome goatee to go along with his eyes

This piece was a study I did of a wolf, done something in the style of the cat I did earlier. I turned out all right, I suppose, and even though there are many mistakes within it, I had fun drawing it.

Oddworld

he's great ^^

I also usually imagine the characters first and imagine a story for them later

I like the anime-like style you have chosen for him I especially like the lower sketch, where he is half with the back to the viewer

(geez my english xD but I hope you understand me though x) ...)

one question: do you make a preparatory drawing before? I do, sometimes... but often I just doodle around xD

Thanks Scipionyx! I'm glad you liked the anime style, even though I feel that I messed up on the eyes XD. Well, life's a learning curve, I'll get it right next time. As for preparatory drawings, that depends what I'm working on; If I'm doing a big art project, then I'll usually do one or more preparatory drawing, but if I'm just trying out things, I'll doodle. Of course, this one is a preparatory sketch, and you'll see Amga looking better then ever at some point in the future .

Thanks Matriar! It really means a lot to me that an experienced artist like you thinks my art's pretty good. I'm fired up now! Woot woot!

Thanks MoxCo.! I'm glad you think my shading's good. Hopefully, it will get better, but there's now saying what the future might hold...

This is an image I did while mulling over the words of Carl Jung, whose theorized that every person has a "shadow-self," a part of the mind made up of all the repressed instincts, desires, and thoughts in one's life. One of the major problems with modern society (or so Jung said) was that people refuse to acknowledge that they have shadow-selves, which gives the shadow-self more power over the mind and leads to schizophrenic and unthinkingly violent behavior. Here, I represented a modern shadow-self as a wolf-boy in a cage, and the still-present influence of the shadow-self as a the tattered ribbons. I don't think it turned out that bad, in any case. Stay tuned for my Jungian-inspired art .

As I said before, I really like this picture. I think I'll look up Carl Jung's words, and then I'm going to draw my own shadow self.

Grandville Rabbit

Thank you GlacierDragon! I'm happy I inspired someone to look up the works of C.G. Jung. I can't wait to see your shadow-self...

Thanks Scipionyx! I have been kinda slacking off at making things to upload (until recently ) And you know what, I think I'll upload another one now!!

This one's a reproduction of a rabbit by an artist who I greatly admire named Grandville. He was a French illustrator, quite popular in his day, and a king of satire. His drawings are some of the better ink illustrations I've ever seen, and I hope I've done justice to the name of Grandville
