Politics - Obama VS McCain

Who do you like more? Who do you think is full of shit? What do you think about their campaigns? Do you think Palin is hot? Do you think McCain WAS hot?

And to those with voting rights in the US, who will you be voting on when the elections start?

Let me just kick off this topic:

After the George Bush failure, you'd all be fools to vote on McCain.

I actually don't think McCain is a bad guy... his campaign is pulling in some violent ignorant assholes, but he himself is alright. Of course, I disagree with him on most issues. Palin, however, is Satan-spawn.

Obama is my man. Biden's cool too, so if god forbid something happened to Barack, I'd be okay with him leading the country.

McCain is about the only Republican I could see myself voting for. But not with Palin as his running mate.

I am actually afraid of a McCain presidency all the while Palin is his running mate. She could turn her Rapture fantasies into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm all down with Obama. It does make me wonder though, how do these politics get us so emotionally involved? I worry because emotions cloud judgements, its one of the reasons I hate American punditry. When I see an Olbermann clip, even though I often agree with what he's saying, i get very emotionally charged, and not just academically angry at republicans, but actually seeing red temper-angry. Similarly when I watch the crap that is O'Reilly. I don't need to have my opinions and ideas warped by emotion this way, so do my best to avoid them and find actual news from more impartial, or at least less charismatic sources.

There's a psychological aspect. Our political leanings seem to be genuinely hard-wired into our brains [Giles 2008, NS], [Khamsi 2007, NS]. Our brains our less active when hearing points of view that go against our politics that when hearing those we support.

But also, I think it's because here in Britain, we and our political parties mostly have the same ideologies but different ideas on how to run the particulars to a nation. In the States, they have two diametrically opposed parties that divide the nation perfectly in twain (I think because the US is somewhat representative of political ideas and the lean and extent of people's politics fall under a bell curve). all American politics are very much polarising. It is interesting then that the whole world outside of the States presents an overwhelming support for Obama. In places such as Europe it is because the Democrats are most like the majority of Europeans. In some other places, I think it is Democratic foreign policy and the strong desire not to live through the Republican equivalent for a third time in two decades that is the main motivation behind their support.

Given the impact that America has on the world, that most of it does not have a voice in the election can be argued to be a significant issue.

McCain would be a disaster. He'd be a slightly better Bush, which means he'd crash the country into a brick wall at 80 mph, opposed to Bush who is going 90 mph. And if he died in office, God help us when Palin takes over.

It's a fucking Disney movie: A hard-working hockeymom who's trying to console her relationship with her pregnant daughter goes on to become President of the United States in the highest-rated family comedy of the year.

I'd watch that. Seriously. Since the last time I posted in a political thread I was banned from a forum I'm always hesitant to use them. But I'll state here that I really don't like either candidate. Now, I don't hate any of them, and the majority of my family is apparently hardcore right-winged or somethin'. I usually go with my instincts on who to vote for. And I don't get anything surprisingly awesome about either of them, so I may not have a decision up until I actually get to the poll.

There's something that bothers me about Obama and I'm not sure what it is - I've never particularly liked Palin - I know the whole thing about aerial hunting but I'm kinda big on wolves and all that and errgh. So I still don't know who to vote for yet, ahahaha.

-Trembles in fear of judgement?- Lol.

I doubt either of them will do much for the country, but McCain's selection of Sarah Palin gutted any hope from me for a McCain administration. Not only that, but also the way his campaign has been run by making lousy remarks about Obama and trying to dig up dirt on him. I know it's politics and this happens, but for someone with so much experience a noble reputation, you'd think he'd have the balls to stick to the issues and not spoon feed that shit to our dumbass country.

Here's a look at some of his supporters. This is from a Palin rally that was held where I live not too long ago.

Well the guy doesn't have his name in favor, that's for sure. Two of his names sound like wanted or dead terrorists. But are there people actually so stupid to believe that because OBama is one letter away from OSama he's automatically a terrorist?! Not even braindead guy in a coma would make that link seriously! Everyone prolly made the joke when they first heard his name but there are people actually thinking it's for real!

Don't wanna flood this topic with youtube videos but check this out. People like this would make you want a dictatorship, wouldn't it? At least then MAYBE you'd be better off then if these people get a vote in who becomes your president .

McCain, IMO, is typical American president. To me he has the looks and the attitude of someone who doesn't give a shit about the people he's serving and in the 4 (or 8) years he'll be in office he's just going do what's best for the government and it's companies first and think about the people later when there's money to spare.

I've always rooted for the Democrat and my decision was solidified after McCain chose Palin in probably the worst publicity jack ever.

Also for the record Obama's name shouldn't even come into account seeing as Osama is A, dead and B, almost certainly wasn't responsible for 9/11 in the first place.

Yes Amerifags, I went there. (By which I meant that it was almost certainly Al Queda but Bin Ladin is just a handy scapegoat used by the West.

The most telling moment I've heard in the last two years was me in the USA chatting to a lifelong republican who was telling me that for the first time he was not going to vote in this election. He had initially been a supporter of McCain, but ever since he got the thumbs up from Bush, his politics have gotten closer and closer to Dubya's. And my mate couldn't justify American continuuing down the same path economically as it has the last few years - and this was well before the current crisis began.

On the other hand, my mum was telling me a few weeks back how nutso she thought Palin was because she was pro-life but against the death penalty, for the Iraq war and etc, etc, etc. I had to point out to her that none of that makes Palin nutso, it just makes her a republican.

I don't get why people would decide not to vote because they don't like the candidates. Someone has to be chosen so you really hate both of them then chose the lesser of two evils. At least then you've contributed.

I have actually been thinking that myself for some time. America essentially rules the world. So why do a select few (and judging by said videos, specifically morons) get the pick over everyone else?

Obama, obviously, as despite the fact I know little about either runner, what I do know is McCain needs to spend time giving actual policies, not apparent controversies on Obama. And Palin? Just...gah. Please. No. It's not even funny.

Though knowing our luck Obama will be assassinated anyway for being a president who isn't a total dumbass (in comparison to what I've heard from Bush, McCain, Blair and Brown, he sounds actually half-decent), like JFK who as far as I'm aware actually did something useful for the country, and got penalised for it with the death sentence. Typical.

If you try and see the bright side in this, at least Biden will be in office then. I think he's rather good too... Although I have no idea why he wouldn't support gay marriage.

Uf... If people are really that much against gay marriage(probably because its against the bible), why not make a gay-version of it? Could cal it "Gay Uniting" or something like that and give them the same benefits and stuff as married couples.
But then again, if they are religious it's another story.

Anyway America has always scared me.. I just hope for everything in the world that Obama wins.

Lastly, I was told by a friend that in the early runnings for this years presidency, one of the candidates was ALL for personal freedom, and that the government should stay OUT of peoples life =( I wish he had gotten more votes. That would have been quite interesting.

Called Civil Partnership here in the UK. Am unsure about what happens in the US. Though still not recognised by the damn Church, who I could rant about/at on this issue alone for hours, but that would be offtopic somewhat.

I know nothing about this Biden unsurprisingly, hasn't turned up on the news obviously since I don't live in the US, unlike Palin because...yeah. But the anti-gay marriage doesn't sound too good to me, I'm a big supporter of this and similar discriminatory issues of our moronic society against people who really have nothing wrong with them, just that morons don't agree with it. Like the Church in many cases (no offence to you Catholics/Christians on here, that doesn't even mean you agree with them, considering what most members of this forum are like...).

What bible-thumpers need to understand, and neglect to do so, is that America is not run by Jesus. He's run by people. So, just because you think god hates fags and masturbation is the devil's work, doesn't mean those things should be illegal for THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

My government teacher made us register. However, I am not yet eighteen, so I won't be able to vote.

Oh, and Obama actually acts human some days XD See?

You don't see other candidates being this awesome.

Well Clinton had his moment and Dubya did a standup routine before the press one which... did have it's funny moments. But yea Obama is so completely different then any other presidential candidate it's going to be refreshing to see him in the white house if he makes it.

It wouldn't surprise me if they will just rig the elections again like they did with Bush (proven fact, no sense starting a discussion). It really seems to me that the people really in charge in America, whoever those people are, want to have a president that is best for their interests and won't stop at the voting box to get who they want. If the higher-ups want McCain, which is quite likely at this point, we'll prolly see another 50-50 election outcome which McCain just barely wins or something.

Yay conspiracy theory!
