Elum Racer

My Elum Racer Game -

I made it today, it took me a couple of hours.

It's only a demo, but I intend of making it a full game, with online multiplayer enabled

Cool game. I haven't tried the demo yet but it looks fun.
Edit: It is cool, but I'd appreciate a different type of music and the animation pretty choppy. And what was Munch doing there?

Just for Oddey, I added the Munch's Chair Groove background music when playing in Rupture Farms.

Munch was in it just because I like crossovers. I know his animation was pretty poor. I'll probably replace him for a Mudokon later on.




And now for the Racer Details.



The 250 shows you how much Moolah you have. I am very poor at the moment, having bought two Elums, plus some upgrades.

The Place Bet function allows you to bet on other peoples races (when in online multiplayer mode) and once the bet has been placed, you can go and watch the race.

The Elum Pen allows you to go an buy more Elums and upgrades, and lets you view the Elums you have now. You can also sell your Elums second hand there.

Return to Town takes you back to town, where you can walk around town (without an Elum), and talk (via an in-game chatroom, or gamespeak) to other members who are online, or NPC's.

Log Off lets you log off the online version, and letsyou play on your own, against the computer.

And I think you can figure out what "Exit Game" does.

Yeah lots of people seem to be having this problem with the background. I don't know why as it works fine for me. count yourself lucky though, Max the Mug can't get anything more than a black screen
And the game stops because it's only a demo.

im sorry but the demo worked and it was kinda crappy.... what? I'm impressed with the spriting and animation but all you do is hold forward until you reach the end
Mind though, I just read the online bit and that sounds pretty awesome.
I have a suggestion, HURDLES!!
I got a way to do effective jumping if you need it...

I also need to find a way of making different characters have different speeds, but not so that they will always win (Ie, as opposed to just setting the speed one up, that way no one could over take them, yet having the same speed would mean that they would be running at the same place, and finish the race at the same time.) as It would be more interesting if you could actually have mutliplayed races, or race against the computer.

I'm not sure about the speed thing but the pumping's simple

say you want them to jump when they press the space bar? This's how you'd do it:
  • you've got your idle/running object
  • make another object with a jumping sprite
  • give the new object a gravity (presuming you're familiar with that)
  • put a trigger on the new object so when it's "created" it moves upward (remember to leave it relative- i think -so it still moves forward at the running speed before the jump). That and the gravity should make a fairly decent arc movement.
  • put a trigger on the original object so when you press the space bar it changes the instance not the sprite and set it to change into your new object.
  • then layer invisible objects over all the grounds you can walk on.
  • put a trigger so that when the jump object collides with the invisible triggers the instance changes back into the original object.
  • WOLAH (that's spelt wrong..) YOUR OBJECT JUMPS!
This way you could make obstacles that you can't get pass without jumping and you might make a way to upgrade how far/high and elum can jump
to change how high make the movement upward faster
to change how far make the gravity less
I do hope it made sense... and if you're unsure about gravity just ask

The user info thing, does that mean multiplayer has been enabled now or is it just a screenshot? And is the slig on an elum possible? Wow Carnix, compared to me, you sure know your way around game maker. Now about that hurdle idea: Great! Another idea is if you had races where you had to jump over holes, land on floating/flying platforms, or have some sort of hazards.

Thankyou very much. I have a problem though. I have set the screen to follow the "Abe on Elum" object. By changing the instance, it means that The elum jumps, however, the screen doesn't follow it, meaning when he's finished jumping, the screen jumps to where it needs to be in order to follow the Abe on Elum object. You can't set the screen to follow 2 objects.

Thanks for your ideas I will do this when I get the jumping to work.

I have enabled the Slig on the elum, but not in demo play. At the moment, the mutliplayer is just a screenshot of what is soon to be.

aha!!

a way to make elum jump without changing instances! I can't believe I didn't notice it before!

right, undo everything I previously told you (but keep the invisible instances where they are)

now!, do the following all to your main object that the screen is following:
  • on press spacebar = move upward (relative... it think...)
  • also on press spacebar = set gravity
  • on collide with invisible object = set gravity (this time set it so there is none)
that will make your elum jump with the screen following but it will also let through double, triple even umtle jumps...
So to prevent that do the following:
  • make another invisible object and layer them a distance above the ones on the floor (about jumping height)
  • set that when the elum collides with these he moves upwards at a speed of zero.
that should work

I'm ganna have to ask for credit for this stuff...
