Oddworld My Oddworld Game (Made using Arxryl's Sprites)

Yesterday I went onto the "Custom Oddworld Sprites" thread, and I was inspired. When I'm bored, I always take on big tasks, rather than do small things. So I downloaded a Game Creation program, and got to work.

I began making an Oddworld Game. The game plays much like the first two Oddworld Games. I have included Gamespeak in my game, and have tried to make the other characters react to you as much as possible (Ie, if you punch them, they punch you back.) If you say hello to one of the characters (Whether it be Another Mudokon, Munch, the almighty rasin, or even a Slig) hen I have had them respond with an appropiate answer ("Hello" "Hey, what's happening Abe!" "Follow me" "No way!" *Fart* *Mudokon laughs*.)

You can get other creatures in the game to follow you (They won't just say "No way", sometimes they say "okay").

As I got further into making the tutorial, I thought I would make a full game out of it, so I thought of a story. I thought that pretty much all the contreversial issues have been used up by Oddworld, so I thought the only one left was fur and animal skins. So this story is about the usage of animals for fashion.

Most of the Sprites seen in the game are made by Arxryl, but The Almighty Rasin is made by Hulaabeo.

Chanting Muds are too busy to talk to you. But if you smack them they'll soon pay attention.


Oh dear. Notice the Paramite about to eat Abe


To kill a Paramite, punch him. He will die. If you talk to the Mudokon on the ledge there, he will turn around to talk to you.


Munch, and some of his Baby Gabbitts with him. Using Gamespeak you can talk to Munch. Don't hit his baby's though, or he'll hurt you... ZAPP



Finally, you have made it to Big-faces hut. he has a message for you.


When you've got what you wanted, Big Face will return to Chanting. You now need to make your way to the portal to get to the Stitchery


Just chant to open the portal. when the portal is open, run and jump in.


I have started on the next level of my game, but I don't want to rush it because I feel it would ruin what is so far a good game.

You can download the Sprites I used from this thread: My Custom Oddworld sprites. (Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga styled.)

If you like them I will continue to post more screenshots as the game develops.

Edit: I'm sorry Dean, I have only just noticed your Oddworld Generation post. I'm not meaning to steal your thunder, I didn't even realise you had a thread like mine Sorry.

Dead Level Two - The Anjul Stitchery

I haven't finished level two, but I thought you might like to see these screenshots anyway.

Straight from Bigfaces hut, and into the Stitchery

The trickiest screen yet. Two Slogs. Four lives at risk. Abe must place his hand in the little machine there in order to activate the Electric wall, thus killing the Slogs.


Abe puts his hand in the machine and the electricity kills the Slogs. Unfortunately it also kills the stupid Scrub who was standing there cleaning the walls.


Now, with quick hands (Or in my case, just for this screenshot, I edited the game so the slogs didn't chase you unless you called them over), You will be able to Make the Mudokon follow you, then tell him to work (When he will begin scrubbing the floors)


Then turn on the Electricity bolt, and let the Slogs run into it.



The Electricity Walls were created by E'l Scrabino
The Scrubs were also created by E'l Scrabino, with some edits by me (To make them scrub the walls and floors etc.)
The Slogs were created by Sligstorm

Good job. Very nice screenshots. And I think there is a reasonably good storyline. But one problem. You messed up because you used Abe sprites as native mudokons, which there is actually some of.

Yeah, I realised this, but by the time I realised it I had made far too many animations of Abe to be bothered to change it. I will probably change Abe and all of the Natives to what they should be when I've finished making level two.

I keep on trying to upload the demo but it never seems to go past 0%. I've started it, went to school, came back and it's still at 0%. I shall try again but if it fails again I'll have to find a different method of upload.

Yeah I made it.

Here is the Demo for download.

I should tell you, because I wanted the game to be farely perfect for the demo, I did have to change some aspects of it (such as taking away Munch zapping you for hitting his babies, there was glitch that meant Munch wouldn't stop zapping you.) There are also a couple of other changes made but I have compensated for them by adding a new screen with a new Character / Enemy for you to defeat in it.

Here is the Gamespeak:

Hint: Keep the gamespeak key pressed down untill Abe has finished talking or the other Mudokons will talk over him, rather than after him.

Press

0 - Chant
1 - Hello
2 - Follow Me
3 - Fart
4 - Whistle 1
5 - Whistle 2
6 - Wait
7 - Work (Has no use for the demo)
Enter - Smack

When playing as Munch, press:

H - Hello

Hint: It's not just mudokons you can talk to... A certain Gabbit understands your gamespeak too.

That's strange. It works fine for me and I have made sure that the one I uploaded was the Stand-Alone executable version and not the Game Maker file. Best wait till someone else downloads it and see if it works for them.

I make games with gamemaker just that i cant get the gravity right, he can float, can someone help?

I haven't enabled Gravity on mine. I have only given him the ability to walk left and right (as of yet) So he can't float. That's the most help I can give you I'm afraid

Well, my honest opinion. Not bad, but need alot of work.

Now, I personally havnt used this GameMaker, so I don't know the ins-and-outs of what is possible with it, but there are quite a few flaws.

For one, why does punching kill things that are nowhere near me? Also, why does punching automaticaly make me turn to the right?

The starting screen is... well, messy, to say the least. I sugest rearanging the insructions ect to make the whole thing look neater. Maybe a change of font, aswell?

Some of the animation looks horrible- for example, the chanting. However, the levels actaully look quite charming, in a simple, cartoony way.

However, the rest of it- the gameplay, the character sprites, and the implementation of Oddworld stuff, is pretty damn cool.

Nice work, can't wait for new levels.

Hey, I am using gamemaker7 for Pacmud so I know the ins and outs and how you can get the punching to only hurt things near you.
So heres how you'd go about it:
  • instead of setting "on press_down" "change sprite", set "on press_down" "change instance" and make the punching thing an entierly different instance!
  • then you can set that when this instance collides with something you can punch the reaction happens and therefore it will only work if you are right next to them when you punch!!
  • You will also be able to set "on press_up" "change instance" back to the origanal instance of the mud.
Hows that?

Yer, stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Must have missed this... Judging from the screenshots (haven't played it yet, but want to) this looks like a pretty awesome game! I like how you used my sprites and I am glad you found them useful!
