Question Abe's Oddysee on Winxp, how can i change its resolution?

Hey everyone,

I've got a tiny problem of which I hope someone here could tell me how to fix it. I installed Abe's Oddysee on my Windows XP and it's always launched in Win95, it works perfectly. However, i have noticed that the movie quality is very blurry It probably has to do with my large resolution for my widescreen which is 1680x1050. I tried to launch the game when my screen is set on a much lower resolution like 800x600 but still for some reason the image in the game looks stretched to fill my screen. My question is: Is there a way to lower the resolution in the game? Maybe some target line parameter in the shortcut properties would do the job...

I'm not sure about changing the resolution, as it's an old game.
I haven't tried this, but it could work.
Right click the game's icon > Click Compatibility > And check Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution.

There could be a program somewhere that allows it. But you'd be best off asking the experts like Max and Xavier.

Xav and I both moderate Oddworld Help, we read anything that’s said here. In theory.

Sam, I just checked, and it does seem my copy of Abe’s Oddysee is distorted from 800×600 to 1400×900 on my widescreen monitor. I hadn’t even noticed! I’m afraid I don’t know what can be done about it.

Just had a thought: can’t you change the width and height of your monitor’s display (as opposed to your computer’s display settings)? You should be able to compact it down till it has a 4:3 aspect ratio, or thereabouts. I think the trouble with this is that you’d probably have to change it manually every time you wanted to play, and change it back again every time you finish.

Mm yeah could work, haven't tought about that... I tried to change it manually but I can't, i think its because my screen is connected to my graphics card through DVI port. I could change the settings if I'd connect my screen through Analog, but mm quality overall is less then DVI ofcourse. I'll try it though and I'll let you know if your right

This is pretty much a problem with non-CRT displays. They can't actually resize the pixels so they need to do some humbuggery to stretch the image, which can make it look blurry.

This isn't the place for your whining, idiot.

Hm... There might be a program that allows you to save the current display of your monitor, so you don't have to change it everytime you want to play. I think this'll help: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfin...tml#QuickGamma
Scroll down to the bottom and a program called QuickGamma should be there.

I solved my problem. I remembered there is a 4:3 aspect ratio pre‐programmed into my monitor, so I tried switching to that while playing AO, and it displays perfectly. When I exited the game, my monitor was able to recognize all by itself that I would probably want a widescreen display. Now it switched between the two automatically.

Maybe this will work in your case.

Sam, it might be your graphics card, is it ge-force (well, thats probably gonna make it too detailed) but if your graphics card is old i could see why

The game uses 4:3 aspect ratio and runs in 640x480 in 32bit colour mode, or 16bit or 8bit, it will use 32, if it that fails 16, if that fails 8, and if that fails it wont run.
If you have wide screen monitor using 16:9 aspect ratio then its going to look REALLY stretched out, also there is no way to change the resoultion to anything higher than 640x480, actually the real resultion is 320x240 which is then upscaled to 640x480 making the pc version look even worse :/
