Random Oddworld Adventures (editable fangame similar to AO and AE)

Well yeah. It's nowhere NEAR complete, as you'll be able to tell as soon as your download finishes. And knowing me, I don't know if it ever will be completed, but yeah, I've started it.

This is intended to be an editable clone of the original Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus games, since level editors do not exist. At the moment, there is no proper editor, but the files can be edited with external programs - the level's appearance is just two BMP or PNG files(you can either have both the same format or one of each), which you can edit in any graphics program, and the level's solid/non-solid data is a plain text file with the .odd extention. If you've created any levels in the old .lvl format, please convert this to .odd ASAP, as I will remove .lvl support in the next version. (Just add 0101 at the start, 00 at the end, and change the file extention to .odd if there's nothing new you want to add)

For those trying to edit the level data:
Now that multiple screens have been added, it's more complicated. The symbols are still the same - # is Abe's Start, . is empty space, < is a left hoistable edge, > is a right hoistable edge, and x is solid. However, the first four characters are now the size of the level. The first two digits are the number of screens horizontally, the second two are vertically. After that, I guess the best way to say it is think of the level as one huge screen, made up of 16x16 tiles. So the first character after those is for the top-left tile of the top-left screen, the next is the tile just to the right of it, and so on. Once you get to the end of the last screen, the next character is the first tile of the second row. And so on. Please note that the game does not yet recognize line breaks, so although you may put them in when editing, be sure to take them out before playing. (This includes after the level size). Take a look at the included file for an example. Editing the images is simply a matter of putting them together as one big screen. (The backgrounds don't have to align perfectly, as only one 320x240 segment is shown at a time)

Gameplay features so far(latest version features in bold):
-All Abe's basic movements
-Die from falling too far
-Entire gamespeak, except for chant
-Delay and angry sound after running/rolling into a wall
-Pull levers to operate barriers
-Smooth screen switching(unlike the original game, which delayed when changing)

Editing features so far:
-(Editing at this point is done via external programs. I may make a proper editor in the future)
-Levels are now stored in subfolders instead of the main folder
-You can edit sounds and graphics (Warning: At this point, all edits are global. I plan to allow edits specific to level packs and even to individual levels in the future)
-Can set tile properties: Non-Solid, Solid, Hoistable Edge
-Can add levers
-Can add barriers
-Can add a foreground which appears in front
-Multiple screens

Bugfixes in latest version:
-none

If you have nothing better to do than dis the file hosting service I use, maybe you should go fuck a slog.

...unless there's actually something genuinely wrong with it, in which case, please let me know right away.

Edit: Disregard that, as I'm now hosting it elsewhere anyway.

Next update will be stalled a bit, because I'm recoding movement from scratch. The existing movement system was far too complex and buggy. (Level loading still works the same, so any existing stuff you've done - not that there's much you can do - will still work)

Edit: Disregard, the new version is here.

Hm, sorry for the triple post(yes, I'm aware of "Edit", but I want to bump the topic as well), but I'm just wondering. Is anyone actually interested in this? Should I keep releasing each update, or just release every so often? What do you want to see before next release? Etc?

And, should I try to only mimic what was in the original, or should I add some new stuff? I was thinking of adding slog posession at the very least...

The jumping is now back! Along with something else new, which you can find for yourself... :-p (Not a major feature, at the moment it's just in there for fun.)

Also - although I'm not planning to add many extra features, I was wondering - what do you guys think about the idea of adding slog posession?

If I don't get it finished for some reason, I will at least release the source code so someone else can pick up where I left off. (I'm thinking of releasing it anyway when the game is finished)

It is pretty messy though, because I don't bother organizing my code well, but it's nowhere near impossible to follow.

The game needs to be worked on a bit. And why is everyone starting their own games now?

Yes, it needs work. It's in a very incomplete stage at the moment.

But, it's being worked on. And the aim is to produce a game similar to the originals, which can be edited. It may very well be the closest we ever get to a proper level editor.

MAJOR UPDATE: Abe's movements are almost complete(just have to add Sneak, and the transitions between Roll and Run), although that's not the major news. The major news is - YOU CAN NOW HAVE MULTIPLE SCREENS!!!

Edit: Transitions between Roll and Run are now in there. All that's left of Abe's basic movements is sneaking.

There is one I'm aware of, but it's related to level design and not programming code. If you run and jump at the low platform at the right time, you'll jump through it a bit. But, in an actual level, I don't really think there's many places you'd put a setup like that anyway. And I have no idea how to fix it. So I won't fix it.

(It doesn't occur as long as you don't have just a single tile thickness above a rollable hole. Which is exactly what the sample level DOES do.)

I found some little bugs now. Try standing on the small platform (the one to the Right) in the inverted room and make a runjump to the right. If you do this, you`ll end up in an emty room.

Climb of the big platform, take two steps away from it. Then turn around and press space. Its not a huge bug, but it does look odd. You probebly already know this bug, and i dont think its fixeble without deleting it.

Runjumping onto the big platform has two different bugs: one for runjumping when being a step away from it. and one for runjumping without any steps between you and the platform.

Thats all. Like i said, no major bugs.

If it's the one where you jump through part of it, that's the one I was talking about before.

As for the going through the floor when grabbing, it's more a graphical error. It will be fixed if/when I use the proper sprites and stuff.
