After playing both munches I found that it was not really a spin off, more like a simplification of the original story with minor changes made to it.

It was definitely simplified. It was essentially “Go to this place and shut it down,” which is the most basic plot of any Oddworld game. The unique story elements that defined the original
Munch's Oddysee, such as Abe trying to meet Munch, the rescue of the last can of Gabiar and getting Lulu to go through a series of rapid promotions were not at all present in the GBA incarnation. However, the GBA version of MO did feature the first known instances of Abe piloting a mobile piece of Mudokon technology, and the first time a financial institution on Oddworld has been shut down.
