The Oncoming Wave of New Odd Fans...

A thought just occurred to me: let's say that Oddworld's first feature film is a big hit, solidifying the Inhabitants as a Hollywood player and paving the way for the silver screen Quintology. That would certainly mean an explosion of new users and posts on this forum, effectively squeezing out we the faithful who've clung on during the dark days of no news. Is the infrastructure of the forum prepared for a surge of new activity, or would it overwhelm and shut the whole thing down? CG films are a big deal these days, and even those with a brainless story and uninspired characters manage to cash in; the epic creativity and lush universe of Oddworld is certain to make a splash if it makes it to the theaters...

Yes, but most of the people who will watch the movie will care about the backstory and ethos of Oddworld. I'm sure we will see an influx, just as we did after SW, but I doubt it will be huge and should die down quickly.

If anything what we'll probably see is a lot of old Oddworld fans coming back.

EDIT: My post count just clicked over Searex's. Woohoo! Now I'm lucky number 13... not that that's anything to care about.

I couldn't agree with you more. It would probably make more money at the box office, and fans, then any of the Pixar movies would. I mean, in the games the cg is so captivating and stunning, imagine how it would be in theaters. The beautiful, captivating enviroments will make audiences feel like they are there. We will have a whole new generation of Oddowrld fans. Oddworld will take movie buffs and Hollywood by storm. It will be so glorious.

yeah, people would pour in, but not as much as the water in New Orleans. It will be crowded.

Well I certainly hope it will be successful. But there certainly are a lot of CG films coming out at the moment. My only hope is that it will end up as everything Lorne hopes it will be (deep, dark, stong plot) because then it should stand out in front of the mostly mediocre offerings from other studios.

An Oddworld movie might not appeal to the public in terms of appearance (honestly, at first glance all Oddworld is is some freak show) but I'm absolutely possitive that Lorne and crew will launch a new era in CG when they release the first Oddworld movie. Their own self made technoligy will stun the entire industry and in turn the public, making them go out and see it.

Anyway, to the question at hand. I don't think we need to worry about a rush of newbs over here for a long time to come. We havn't heard anything concrete on the movie just yet, only that Lorne did confirm it. Once the first information starts being released, thats when we need to get worried XD.

I have a feeling the film will do well. If it has two things (maybe more)

1) A stinking good storyline and good voice actors.

2) A fabulous soundtrack. Bross will have to whip up some a lot of excellent stuff for this.

In short, I think the film will go like Twelve Monkeys. It will be odd in an appealing and attractive way.

Well, lets remember, AO was very successful. They sold a million copies between AO's release and AE start. And OWI sold more over time and released 2 more successful and unforgetable games. The movie theater would be packed with old fans, a lucky people who just got in time, to watch. An OWI sure will be sucessful, but any new fans, that is a curious thought.

Why do you say that? OWI have the technology to make a movie and if you saw the credits for AE, 5-6 people played all the characters in the game. They already have actors and producing tools. And if you listened to your mamma, say nothing here. Your hoping that OWI will fail and completely go out of buisness and shut down the company. That ain't the way.

Nothing horrid having more active members, I say it makes this place more exiciting. Sure Mods will have to work more harder and we may see more spamming wars, but that's natural, that's why we have our beloved mods around. But the problem I see is that alot things are going to be already posted, so some members may post less becuase they won't get the chance, or there is no need.

I think it's aright for me if the oddworld movie won't make such a huge splash on the cinnema, or unable to make it on to the silver screens. For me it's inportant if the movie of Lorne's dreams is released and will continue with the saga (and I get to see it of course). But alot of people know who's Abe anyway, and people like him, if the film is based on Abe that is. If it is, it will be recognised. I'm sure Lorne has worked on an Abe script Undoubtedly it would best on the big screens.

:
What was 12 monkeys?
It's a movie from somewhere in the 90's, staring Bruce Willis, who's this insane guy in this nut house. And Brad Pitt is in it too.

I see it the same way too, atleast I hope so. I mean oddworld is odd enought by it self, hopely it doesn't follow to close to the Hollywood trend. In my opinion, I think it's going to be one of the most inportant CG films, becuase alot of CGI movies these days are phony.

Thats true, Madagascar was pure filth.

Not to mention a global virus being spread by Brad Pit and oodles upon oodles of time travel.

I would like just the movie to come brilliant in the way we see it. But for Lorne's and the Forums' sake, I want it to be well liked by everyone, grossing high hits at the box office. Yes it is important that Lorne gets his word out, but money is what fuels OWI. We shall see.

And plus, they could afford to make a game after the movie and any more movies they will make. This could mean more games.

Somehow I doubt that Bross is still with the company. They could get one of any number of accomplished composers for the movie. Thomas Newman would kick major arse.

AO was a very long time ago. I've met plenty of people who played the game and can barely remember it.

I have to agree, many friends even wonder why I care about such an old game. When I tell them the last opus was released a year ago (yep over here, it's nearly a year), the go like "what?? never heard of it, they are still alive?"

So OWI has to make much much noise with their comeback to get their old fans back

I have only 2 friends that have actually heard the games. One of them I believe saw AE and was scared of it. This was a long time ago, probably at 1998. The other saw MO, which as he described, ok. One doesn't mind that OWI is releasing new games and the other heard of SW already. I got a similar group of your friends.

I've been waiting forever for America to take animation seriously. I think Oddworld might do that.

Let the new fans come! We'll recruit anyone.

Or the movie is not liked by most and new spammers start crapping spam, saying "OWI sucks! YOu are **** losers!" That would be the dawn of mods' power. Then, even the now mods will have to have back up and Alcar or Abe Babe will hire new mods to control the spammers. And the new mods start giving warnings to the people they hate and next... Oh, OWI better give a good movie to the public.

I see what you're saying, Angalok. When SW came out, a burst of new mbers came out, and when somebody metioned "Abe" the new members would go "Uh? Who's abe?"
And these endless new members started to overwhelm all of my friends on OWF. That's why I'm not on very much now.

Recently we have had a new wave of fans joining the forums. It gets annoying on how people are just posting meaningless threads. Like "You call yourself an Oddworld Fan? Well you don't have this merchendise" That's not making conversation with fellow Oddworld Fans, thats degrading other Oddworld Fans and shoving what you have got in their faces. A thread about how sligs speak. I think most of our new Oddworld fans are not only new to the oddworld forums, but it's quite clear that they have never posted on a forum before.

It kind of annoys me when you have played all the games, and your able to talk among pals about all the games and make connections, then you get several people on the forums who join who's only played Stranger. I think you bought it because it is a first person shooter and the character looks cool. If it had been Abe with a crossbow, you would have laughed in the shops and though "That looks like a crap game"

Anyway, I think I'm drifting off topic slightly. I think that when new games come out, or when the movie comes out, that these new fans will stay long, you only have to look at the fans who only knew about stranger. Where are they now?

Everyone has their different tastes in different games, I think it was OWI's main idea with SW to get to a more wider public. Games are products, they need to be bought by costumers.

I think we just let the spammers be, they can easly get what they derserve by Mods. I think this forums has good strict control over members, it's us who make the forums a home, and new members can learn to adapt by following our sacred ways.
