Drew the Slig has just finished his first commercial game!

Hi everyone, I'm Drew the Slig and I was Fan of the Month and stuff a couple of years back; I'm still into Oddworld and they have inspired me to get into game's programming: some of you may remember my Slig's Oddysee games.

Anyway, I've just finished my first commercial game, which is on sale now.

Below is the typical thread I use:

I'm not posting this just to make some quick sales from my old haunts, but I just thought I'd let everybody know that you CAN do something if you want - I've been programming for a couple of years now, and wanted to come along and show you how I've been getting along.! Oddworld really has been my inspiration for this; the storyline even involves a factory and slavery.

Check it out if you want, hell, maybe even buy one

Yes, I spent ages replaying your oddworld games and loved them. When my first won an award for my films, I was so proud, I should imagine your feeling the same by having a game of yours published.

I have always loved your games, from Sligs Oddysee to Crig the Slig, and this is one game for my Christmas list.

When AO was released you probably didn't think "$10, just to play as a little blue guy", you are only saying that because you know the publisher through Forums and you played his first ever games.

Well, it does look pretty cool, and yes, I agree with many people on their points.

Hey Drew. Just a quick tip, you can quote someone [with the lil box and everything] by pressing:

Or by typing [*Quote=Used]I am a potato![/quote*] (Of course minus the *) {So it would look like:

:
I am a potato!
But your game looks so so so cute! ^_^

Dito!

And nice drawing skills Rexy!

Anyhoo, Drew. You seem to be very fond of making video games, but to sell a game which, especialy in these times, I would call more of an experiment. And for 10 bux... I dunno if that's wise, let alone profitable.

The concept it alright, unfortunatly people want more for their money then a good game concept these days.
But keep up the good work! I can see you be a 3D genious sometime if you keep practising it.

Drew, your game looks rather cool and funky. As does Rexy's crazy editing.

So basically ya. This is advertising by the way, which is against the rules. I suggest some minor edits to the first post just to remove all the talk of buying things, using money, and credit cards, etc.

But good going, I suggest maybe lowering your price a little just to get the sales going and build popularity. 9.99 is a lot for a company's first small step into the computer games industry. I suggest you start it at 2.50, then as it gets more and more popular, jack up the price a little.

Jeez you guys are downers. Anything less than $9.99 doesn't cover the time and energy put in, sorry. Making a game isn't a quick thing: this project has taken a year to make. (For people in the UK, $9.99 is just £5.00) Also, if it is like $2.40 then it just looks like a bad game, otherwise I wouldn't be selling it for that little.

And to whoever said that people want more than a good concept for a game; there happens to be 16 levels and 8 minutes of film more.

Thanks for all the comments,
Drew C

What did you do in the game, what was its objective? How many levels were there? How many minutes of movie footage?

Dude... I think you're overestimating what Drew has done. This is a low-budget game that was made in the course of a year. It's not likely that there were movies at all.

I can't be sure though. I'd try out your game, but I'm at school right now, so I'll have to wait till I get homsies.

No, no you guys are getting mixed up.

I made a Slig game a few years ago, it had like 4 screens of AE style gameplay and it was lame. The objective was to like, get to the end of each screen for the next.

THIS game is the one with movie footage. It has 8 minutes of film sequence, all voice acted by voice actors (ie: not me) and the objective is to collect all coins and find all cages in each level; this can only be done using the two characters together, in fact, ala MO.

Sounds likeyou used Pinnacle or Smartsound to do the video.

On the first level I died because I thought it was cool who could swim, then I got the jist of it and played on. Were these Voice actors proffesionals or were they friends etc.

When people say " five quid is just too much " I don't think they realise how much hard work and effort goes into making things like Films and Games, when I sell my films, people say "I aint payin a fiver for a film I've never even heard of", they can really hurt your feelings. A film is difficult to make, but a game with intro movies. I admire your courage. My Fanbase for my films have asked me to make a game of my films. I'm only in the script and I'm fine with the filming part, filming is my life, but the gameplay part,, it goes right over my head.

It is a great game. I lvoe games that allow you to switch characters at any time, MO, ToeJam & Earl, and I love this one.

Dude don't think I don't know what it takes to make a game, because I do. I work part time in a game production company as an assistant designer, so I have hands on experience with the industry.

The thing is, you can't "expect" people to just know how much time and effort you put into it. Many games start off giving their game away for free as a beta version just to get some reviews and popularity. You need to build up a base of customers before you start asking for money.

Another thing is, 10 bucks is ENOUGH for people to have to THINK about buying it. What you want is a price that's so low that people don't even care about it. Hey, 2.50, that isn't a lot, it costs the same to buy a sandwich so sure why not. But 10 bucks? I could buy a whole meal with that... I might have to think about whether I want to buy this game... I don't even know if I like the looks of it yet. See what I'm saying? This is what people who visit your site will be thinking. They might be turned off by the price and at the end of the day THAT will cost you more than setting your price a bit lower.

Don't take it like I don't appreciate the work you've put - I know exactly how much work goes into these things and I give you kudos for it. But the fact is the general public not only don't know how much work goes into it, they also don't care, so you shouldn't bank on them considering that when they look at your price tag.

The game has already been a free BETA in other places for a month, and it's a proven fact that selling games extremely cheaply is well.. cheap. And people don't buy it. (Source: www.gametunnel.com)
If somebodies not willing to dish out a tenner, then I'm not willing to sell it. Simple as; you clearly do not understand the amount of work that goes in. And the reduced introduction price doesn't work here; this is a disposable product; it's not like software that people have to use again and again, so the model really doesn't apply.

To answer somebodies question about the voice actors; they're all "pro" voice actors from www.interactivevoices.com

Anyway you all seem to be pretty meany around here :S so I'll return to my better haunts again. Thanks for the nice comments peoples.

Ten bucks is only five quid over here, and if I saw game that looks good for a fiver, I think I would buy it, ten quid, I would have to think about it.
