Community Discussion: Shop Hack, Front Page, etc.

OK. You guys voted, now lets see how we can implement your opinions into the everyday workings of OWF.

Shop Hack - I like this idea, although I know very little about it. In the end, Alcar will have to decide the whether or not this feature could feasibly be integrated into the forums. However, don't let this stop you from making suggestions. Talk about what you would like to see in the "shop." Maybe you've seen something on another site that you wish this forum had? Also, how do you think (specifically) members should earn moolah?

I know a lot of you have discussed this here and there, but we could go into a lot of depth in this thread. Linkage to shop hack-related things, maybe?

Front Page - Awesome idea. I'm 100% behind it. What would you all like to see if we did have a front page? Web toons and comics from the members? In-depth member profiles and links? Crazy-ass videos of the stupid things that you and your friends do? Anything really. Just brainstorm.

Now... we may hit a snag when it comes to hosting/making this hypothetical page. Any volunteers?

Contests - We really don't even need a separate forum for this. Suggest cool ideas for contests. Or not. Hell, you can go ahead and make some in OT while you're at it.

If you really want to go all out, you can discuss Sub-Forum Expansions, although I don't really think we need anymore forums than we already have (unless there is enough demand for a Non-Oddworld RPG).

We've talked about a lot of shit so far. Let's start doing some of it. I'm looking for anyone who will be will to create/participate in any of the aforementioned topics.

Front-page:
Well, i was thinking that some members could do some crazy-ass videos, piccies, comics(i'm up for the comic-stuff

), programs and games(sligstorm made some anyways)and stuff.
And well, i was thinking about some nifty member-features, like profiles, journals or well, some funny stuff you could do when you're bored.
But we still have to remember that the forum is OWF's heart. But i don't think anyone will forget about them, and new members (who know what forums are) will automatically look for one to discuss their art and stuff

.

Anyways, as for the non-owf rp forum. There were once alot of members who demanded one, but Alcar turned the idea down.... Dunno about now. alot of new RPers have arrived, but old ones have left too.
I say thumbs up for the sub-forum or whatever

I honestly think that an non-Oddworld RPG could work. I'm sure if we badgered enough people, it would drum up quite a crowd.

I think there should be a non-Oddworld RPG forum. It would attract quite a few members I'd imagine, as lots of people like internet RPing and if we had various sorts of RPing, then more people would sign up, and we may atrract some of the old crowd back.
As for a shop hack, as I've said before, I've been on forums with shop mods, and they are lots of fun, and tend to have lots of active members. The positives are:
1- members get cool stuff to display in their profiles
2- It adds an incentive of good behaviour for those who normally don't obey, as good behaviour+ good posts= more shop money.
3- It brings in more members, as people like to compete to earn stuff and set themselves higher up their own ladder of forum success.
3- It adds a new punishment, money removal for rulebreakers. When I moderated forums with shop hacks, I used this punishment a lot and it often was successful.
However, the negatives are:
1- you sometimes get members spamming to get more shop money. The solution is to delte spam posts and give warnings, temporary bans, money reduction etc. and for the normal members to just completely ignore the spam postings.
2- You get unscruplulous mods who rig their own cash amount so they can get more stuff, and reduce others' cash.

But if it is kept fair and spam-free, it is effective and very enjoyable. I'd suggest cash earning from posting (but decuting cash for spam), good behaviour, and insightful posts.

The contests I gave some input for in the original topci, but I'll give it again. You could have the usual spontaneous minor competitions, and as for regular, forum wide organised contests I'd suggest some of the following ideas:
1) The AnnualForum Member Awards
2) The Oddlympics, this could be incorporated with the shop mod to a degree.
3) OWF Best writer Competition
4) OWF Best Artist Competition

And this could all be mixed with the shop hack so that those who win contests get some bonus shop money. Again, I have experience in this, and it works. Contests such as these, with a prize, such as perhaps shop money, a free custom title etc. would give members a big time incentive to put more effort into what they do, thus improving the forums' overall quality.

I'n pretty sure OWF used to have a front-page. It had links to Fan-fic + Fan-fic and such. I think it wasn't too bad an idea.

As for Shop Hack, DDRUK have a good way to stop spam. They give you CP (contibution points) for every day you post. If you post one, or even 50 messages, in one day, you get one point. This way, people won't post everywhere for the hell of it. (Also, DDRUK limits you to 30 posts a day, unless they really like you.)

I know other places that give you gil for each post... which can lure people to spam.
The idea of a bank (put in Gil and 24 hours later get more gil out) is really good, since it allows anyone to earn gil without blitzing the forums.

Like having those big ones, and then members could maybe create small contests, and ask a mod or someone if they could do a prize for the win or something.... I have quite a few funny contest ideas

Contests are a good plan, as is the non oddworld RP. But A front page, im not to sure about. Shop hack... could work. But what would we be able to buy with our moolah?
I cant think of an awfull lot to be honnest. Not with the rules being as strict as they are.

A front page would be great. It would be easier to look up certain things, like pictures or videos you mentioned. The Non-Oddworld RPG could work, I guess. And the shop hack sounds interesting, too.

Contests? Like 'The Most Interesting OWF-Member-made Video' or 'Most Interesting Thread'... or something like that.

I think the shop hack should give bonus points for decent and really cool posts too.

Also it would be neat if we could have different star types, the more expensive they are, the more funky they look.

We should have competitions that award cash prizes. (funniest joke competitions, weirdest photo competitions, coolest cartoon competitions, etc.)

So... any idea how/when this is getting done, or who's doing it? Does anyone here have the knowledge or skills to set this sort of thing up?

Anyway, I'm 100% in favor of all these awesome ideas. Woot for thinking of them, fellow forumizzites!

Contests would be killer; I like the best hair idea, T-Nex. Something along the lines of "Funniest Movie" or "Most Creative Something-or-Other" would be cool as well. Those would be majorly fun to participate in, and if some Oddworld news comes in soon, we might attract enough people to make them worthwhile. Yay!

No one has volunteered to host/create a Front Page.

Also, I have no idea how to implement a Shop Hack feature.

Contests are still go, though. Seriously, anyone can just make one if they want. If it turns out to be popular and gets a good deal of participation, then awesome. If not, no biggie.

I can host files and all that crap on a filefarmer account, if that's any help. It's not like I'm gonna use 3gbs.

Well, i could help with the front-page, but that would most likely be small gif-piccies if you need them... I kind of suck with HTML, and Dreamweaver always messes it up for me :P

Shop hack could be implemented using a vBulletin hack. I know Advent Children uses it (or maybe they stopped it, but they did at one time).

But dammit! No Non-Oddworld RPG!

Luke, I would be willing to create or host the main page if you'd like. If possible though I would like someone else to be in charge of actually maintaining it. But yeah, if I could get more specific details on what you need as far as space, maintenance, assignment, etc. I'd be more than willing to offer up some of the space on my site.

I'm sure I could whip together some criteria, but what do you guys (the forum) want to see on the front page? Specifically.

Well, we have a taker for hosting. Do we have an OW fan site out there that might want to merge with OWF? Maybe someone with the skills to create and maintain and entirely new design?

Again, you're awesome for volunteering, Benson my man.

The only contendors for the merger would be Oddworld-Web or Oddworld Universe, if at all, as they are the sponsors.
