MAFIA (Sign Up Thread)

It is 20th Century small town America. From Italy, the Mafia have fled the armed forces of their government to set up shop in the land of dreams. Their work is quickly underway, deciding to begin infiltrating and taking over a small American town in the North-East, before they hit New York. However, the townsfolk do not take kindly to this criminal organisation, and will do everything they can to prevent them taking their town.
Unfortunately for the townsfolk, the Mafia has set their roots deep in the town, and nobody aside from their assossiates know Mafiaman from innocent Townie.
There's investigating to be done!

Rules
The game is split into two periods: Day and Night.
During the Night, nobody can post in the (game) thread, and you PM me with your night action IF you have a Night action. Night has a time limit of around 24 hours.
During the Day, I post up what has happened in the Night. Most commonly, this will entail the killing off of a Townie by the anonymous Mafia. In this period, everybody can post. Day time is when people are supposed to decide who is a Mafia agent, and then vote for their lynch. The forumer with the most votes is lynched from the game. (Mafia can vote to throw off suspicion, naturally). I will post who has been lynched when Night begins.
Your objective is to outlive the other team: Mafia have to kill enough Townies so they hold Majority, and Townies have to lynch every single Mafia agent.
All players in the Mafia know who each other are, and are advised to discuss who they want to murder at Night Time through private conversation - MSN, PM or email.

Roles of the Mafia:
The Don: This is the leader of the Mafia, and it is he who sends the Mafia's kill for the night, after deciding with the Mafia group.
I will appoint another Don if and when a Don is lynched by the town.

Mafia Agent: These are under the Don, and tend to do his dirty work. If the Don is a rogue and does not make Night Actions or kills the group intends, you can all overpower him with PMs to me.
Mafia Agents are to discuss who they want to murder, then kill that person - at night times.

Roles of the Town:
Priest: The local Priest can protect one player each night (of his or her choice) from the clutches of the Mafia. You may well choose to (vainly) protect a Mafia Agent, or somebody who is not targeted. You have to use your initiative.

Policeman: The policeman can investigate one player per night, and I will reveal their role to him. Beware, claiming to be the policeman or always giving information you gained at night (during the day) will undoubtedly cause the Mafia to target you as their kill. Afterall, they do not know who the policeman is.

Townie: A simple player, who has no Night Action, but is supposed to try and lynch a Mafia member each day. (All players can vote in lynches). Townies make up the majority of innocent players.

-Vote Claiming is an essential part to Mafia. If you are in the Mafia, and find yourself becoming lynched, you can claim to be a Townie, Policeman or Priest, etc. Anyone can claim to be anything, but the real person with that role knows the truth, obviously.
-You must place Lynch votes in bold, or they will be ignored. An example vote would be: Vote: Shrink. You must unvote before re-voting someone else, if you change your mind, as so: Unvote, Vote Alcar.
-Giving reasons for a vote is necessary, unless you want to be under suspicion for being Mafia yourself. Random votes are allowed, of course, if only to kill off the day.
-You can Vote: No Lynch if you are afraid to lose 'another' Townie in an incorrect lynch. Majority votes this way means no action will happen before night.
-Do not copy/paste any PM's I send you to anybody or in the thread. Do not reveal to anybody your true role with proof, unless 'role claiming' during the day in posts.
-As many people as I see fit can sign up. Once the sign ups have finished, I will send out all roles, create a Game Thread, ask for confirmation that you understand your role, then being Night 0.
-Do not post at night.

Oh, I don't think this is clear enough:
I randomly allocate you roles after the sign ups are finished. You do not choose what position you have.

I'll join, but the only thing i don't get is the night actions bit. What can you do? i.e What does a Mafia agent do? Like, can he smuggle in drugs, make a robbery etc. or does whoever plays the don have to PM the agent players first with orders? Also what do the townies and policemen do, and how does te priest's protection work? It sounds fun, I just don't fully get how the Night Actions thing works.

Okay, I'll try to clarify.
At night:
A Mafiaman (Agent) is supposed to discuss with the rest of the Mafia group and decide amongst themselves who they want to kill (out of the Townsfolk).
The Don will then PM me their decision, though another member can as well if the Don doesn't bother/isn't there that night/lies.

Townies do nothing at night, except hope they are not murdered.

Policemen PM me with a request to see the role of another player. For example, "I would like to know Shrink's role."
Then I'd reply with his role: "Shrink is a Townie/Mafiaman, etc"

Priests PM with a requests to protect another player. For example, "Protect Hobo."
This would mean that if the Mafia decide to kill Hobo that night, it will fail.

(If they want, the Mafia can all PM me with who they want to kill, and I will kill whoever has the majority 'vote'. The Mafia must be strategic, and kill people who are good in Daytime discussions, people who suspect some of their team, or people who are assumed to be an important role, such as Priest/Police.)

If we get lots of players (15+), other roles can and will be added, such as the Vigilante or Secret Agent. The roles I have explain are the core to any Mafia game. Normally, other roles are not explained by the host of the game, and only the person who has that role knows it in it's entirety. I will probably explain extra roles to the group.

No problem Dino. Mafia games normally end up being a lot of fun on forums, with lots of sequels using different themes. For this, I went with the traditional real mafia theme, rather than something like the Old West, Fantasy, Vampires or something, because I gather this is most peoples' first game.

On a little side-note, doesn't all non-OW RPGs go in the NOA&L? I'm sure I've seen RPGs there.

Hmm... you have a point, though I didn't consider it an RPG. It's forum game, that I always see in OT forums... however, I suppose people do play as roles.
I'd prefer it in here, at least til we have enough people, because this is where most people actually go.

Well, in what material I have read and seen about the mafia, those have been the ranks, but there could be others, I don't know.
