Hush child...

This film looks like it's gonna be one of Spielburg(sp.)'s rubbishy Love and friendship morality films. Ick.

It looks awesome, and the reviews have been surprisingly great. I'll see it the day it comes out, I've got nothing better to do. Too bad Tom Cruise is creepy now.

It's not really a remake of the 1953 movie, it's based on the H.G. Wells novel. That bad movie just so happened to be based on the novel as well. The novel itself I hear is really good.

That makes me laugh, so, so much. XD Wasn't the previous movie based on the novel, at least loosely? It would have to be, no? With a title like 'War of the Worlds'.

I just saw it, I thought it was great. I had never heard the audio series or anything, and the movie made me realise how crazy people would go in a situation like that.

*** Spoilers ***

I was disappointed by the ending though. it was anti-climatic and I was hoping the family all died.

What I'm saying is, Steven Spielberg looked at the novel when he made the movie, not the previous film. It's a lot like saying that Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was a remake of the earlier film.

It looks like it could be good and I personally like mostly all Speilberg's work. Namely close encounters of the Third Kind etc. So hopefully this doesnt disappoint.

Well I think it is going to suck because for one its a remake to a classic which should be a big no no for Hollywood filmakers. Well for me Im interested in seeing something nobody has ever seen before, it just seems like Hollywood these days have ran themselves out of original and creative work.

Why do people think it's a remake,Lord of The Rings was based on a book..did any call that a remake, just cause War of the Worlds had other films made about it does that mean it HAS to be a remake? Or maybe the director has said that it's a remake because i wouldn't know and if so then ignore this post.

It's a remake of a story formed as a film from a book.

All those who think the movie will suck, you have nothing to worry about. I'm not going to spoil anything, but what I can say is that it was amazing. The best end of the world movie I've ever seen, without a doubt. This thing is scary as hell.

The machine type thingies look like total rip-offs of the Tripods from the Tripod books. Of course, it's possible that the author of those books ripped off that design from H.G. Wells. I've never read the book, so I don't know. Heh. Okay.

It looks quite awesome. I'm going to see it any day now.

"But you forgot about Herbie!"

Herbie is not a remake, its a long awaited sequel, like star wars, but they went Backwards, yeah, Herbie Fully Loaded or something like that, that wasn't the name of the old ones.

True, but though I was wrong on its remake status my larger point, which I've been bitching about at OWF for the better part of 2 years is that Hollywood is nothing but remakes, sequels and comics/books brought to life.
I'm still a total sucker for comic book movies and many sequels, but Christ.

I saw War of the Worlds today and it exceeded almost all of my expectations. Hell, the sheer power of the imagery almost made the complete, total lack of acting skill less noticeable!

Heh. But seriously, the imagery of some of the scenes really hit home. The angry mob of people fighting over the van... the dead bodies floating down the river... really, really great stuff.

And on a side note, I WANTED TO THROTTLE THOSE BRATTY-ASS KIDS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE MOVIE.

It was actually how the original story ended, and I'm glad that they didn't botch the ending with some cliche "American spirit triumphing over adversity" thing. Like in Independence Day.

But you do bring up an interesting point. It's my firm belief that a zombie and/or alien survival story should only end in one of two ways...
  • Everybody dies.
  • A Deus ex Machina (in this case, a microscopic one) swoops in and ironically obliterates the malevolent force. There is no way that an inferior species (like... lets say... humanity) could survive in a situation like that.
Yeah. Like that.

A little off topic, but does anyone know why Cruise has been so batshit lately? I know he's a clam but so is Travolta and that mofo is cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Well yeah!

One of the best cheesy-ass sci-fi movies ever made. Which is great if you're into that kinda thing, and horrible if you're not.

I actually thought the ending was better worded in the old version, although it was pretty eloquent in the new one as well. Meh. Maybe I'm just remembering the old ending better than it was.

If you go down that road get like Skeeters and Battlefield Earth and some Ed Wood stuff. It'll be like MS3K in the comfort of your own home.

Signs with lots of money.
Yay.

I honestly believe there are ways to resolve such situations without lameass deus ex machinas.
At least the original explained it better: The aliens were in the process of changing the atmosphere of Earth by growing plants to produce the right gases.
