Unnecessary Friction and Hostility

I didn't where to say this. There's no random off-topic thread, and there's no recent thread here I could add to; I did looking in the thread about Spelling and Punctuation but it appears to be closed.

Anyway, at the moment, tehre is a lot of unnecessary hostility between posters. This community is only very small, in comparison to a lot of communities, and rather than creating an unhealthy atmosphere from which people are bound to leave (remember Clairebear?) I think we should accept small spelling mistakes to which people are constantly overreacting.

This thread here for instance. Check posts 21, 25 and 26. All unnecessary. Big ****ing deal, he put the apostrophe in the wrong place and potentially left out a comma.
I was actually interested in that discussion, and it's just plain disappointing to see in literred with worthless shit.

Yeah, it looks like a weak argument, giving you one example, but to be honest, I can't be bothered trawling through the posts looking for your rubbish. Please attempt to be tolerant and warming to each other; people are always jumping down peoples backs for every small slip-up.
We have a stupid shit thread. A stupid-what thread? Yes, I know people are fully aware of shit, and that it's not really that bad in such a perdominantly teenage environment, but it looks really hostile. I've always hated that thread, if only for it's name.

Look at the way they're jumping down each other's necks here. God, this gets on my nerves. It's everywhere. And it always escalates. Maybe it's just the threads I visit.

I'm not even sure what I'm suggesting here, which is why I wanted to put it in a random thread in Off-topic, but I hate constant friction and tension in such a small community.

I believe Hostility means showing aggression. In posts 21, 25 and 26, I recall no bad language and no exclamation marks. However I will agree it was pontless in monaing about a comma. I did treat Alpha like that, so I was like DI, a prick, but hey I said sorry and made up didn't I? Whcih brings up another point. Disgruntled Intern. Not a single one of his posts show kindness, unless to someone he actually likes. Which is usually a prick aswell. Like Sligslinger. And in Agent-Sara's welcome thread, I recall her being flamed by Abe's Son and DI. AS never usually acts like that, but DI thinks that cos he's a mod, he can do what he likes. He became a mod during the days of Sydney, who banned people he didn't like for no reason. Another facsimilies and mawk show allot of insulting too. But I only insult now, if someone does it to me, so I'm guilty too then, a bit.

I agree, Esus. There are members here who take out their agression on others. If I see it anymore, I guess I'll intervene. Usually I prefer if the members sort things like that out, as it can continue behind closed doors, and escalate further.

Disgruntled Intern was instated during the first ever Moderator elections held on the Oddworld Forums. Which was after Sydney's time. And the representation of Sydney that you've posted is incorrect, not to mention rather hurtful.

AS usally never acts like that?

...

I always act like that, I'm not-not proud of it...

I'm a flamer, so just... yeah. I try to be nice... just... stuff piss's me off.

But I'll lay off.

Then again I hate ALOT of the remaining members... this is all the newbies (n00b is an insult, newbie is a term) mainly only because there all uber-young and cannot spell, this for one thing makes me angry, second they act pretty damn annoying, now I can't say I wasn't like that but It took me a while to realize I needed to spell and cut the s[-]!t or I'd get flamed, hard.

Yeah, i've seen many people get flamed for nothing. It's kinda stupid looking at. It only makes the flamer look like some smart-ass wannabe.

DI, was just saying the topic was stupid, his giving his option.

And you don't have to worry about what they say, it's no big deal, just keep it cool and be calm. If it hasn't got nothing to do with you, just ignore it, you don't have nothing to worry about.

If some of you are realy that aggresive, go and punch a pillow. Or just try and keep control of yourself.

-If you would have done your homework, you'd have learned that Joe the Intern and myself were both banned by Syd which lead to the infamous coup that left Abe Babe and Alcar in charge of the forums.

-I don't think I can do whatever I want because I'm a mod; I do what I feel needs to be done. Granted, I'm a bit tough on most users, but most users spam, post incoherent threads and tend to act like it's acceptable to butcher the english language.

-I'm sorry, but unless it's not your first language, then there's absolutely no reason for the lack of punctuation and over-abundance of shorthand on these forums.

-I close topics that need to be closed. If it's your topic then hopefully you'll rethink being so hasty about posting your mindless dribble the next time around.

-Maybe you'd prefer that I spent 50% more time here. Maybe instead of exploiting your mistakes I should just edit and correct every single grammatical error I find.

...Or maybe you should stop whining for once. I mean, it's quite obvious that you have a personal problem with me, CS, yet you've never sent me a PM addressing the apparent issue.

Instead you've decided to take it upon yourself to call me a 'prick' every chance you get.

Believe me, this is one of the worst ways to get me to 'ease up'.

I'll side with DI and Faxs here. I'm against un-necessary flaming and stuff, but some dickheads do deserve a good flame. That's why DI is in his current position.

The way the forums are run usually gets rid of bogus posters; through flaming and good moderator work.

It's nice to see a thread now and again that shows some balls, good job Esus! I don't know if I actually agree that the forums are getting too hostile, but I see where your coming from. There is, on the other hand a lot of folks that can be pretty damn annoying (some may call them newbies), but its always been like that. I do enjoy heated debates, they are quite enjoyable, although may be interpreted as mean-spirited.

As far as I'm concerned, the Stupid Shit thread stays. If there are MULTIPLE people who are REALLY offended by the name, then DI or I can change it.

I do, however, believe that it's necessary to keep the clutter down by using that thread. Then again, my opinion is completely biased because I did come up with the idea for the thread in the first place...

Furthermore, I do not believe that there is an overabundance of hostility in the first place. We have a couple members who need to lay off, not including DI; I usually think his quips are deserved. In fact, I was considering contacting Peter via PM about the Mods (myself included) not being aggressive enough when it comes to pointless banter.

EDIT: Scratch that. We don't have a "couple" members that are being overly hostile. We have at least four. That is, at least four members who are actually the same person and think it's cute to constantly change identity, despite the fact that their obvious mannerisms and constant bitching give them away every single time. Not mentioning any names, naturally.

Disagreements, friction, hostility, and arguments are always going to be a part of any community. Most serve to strengthen the community, by challenging things which may seem inappropriate, and the consequence is usually an increase in knowledge on both sides. However, with that said, there are definitely people who plainly intend to cause malicious damage. In this case, it is the latter.

From my point of view, we have two options:
  1. Take a 'no tolerance' approach
  2. Or not

It seems like the last time a 'no tolerance' approach was taken the majority of our bigger contributors left the forums.

Boy howdy, let's do it again!

I was partly joking

Though I'm interested, which big contributors left? I can't say for the life of me that I remember anyone, bar a few children, leaving. Unless you actually consider the 'Death family' contributors.

pretentiousness is not an excuse for hostility.

the majority of threads that most likely spawn hostility are either because of: a) differing views, b) grammar/semantics/English mechanics, or c) random/other.

from what i've seen in my short time here, i would say that semantics, spelling, capitalization, and general mechanics account for a vast majority of insults.

it's hilarious. people think it's still clever to criticize on a linguistic basis when they can't spell or properly articulate themselves.

unless it's completely unintelligible, it's about what you type, not how you type it.

on a basis of 'differing views', i think hostility is only natural. not to the point of unintelligent insults, but friendly hostility is an acceptable medium for anybody with a modicum of intelligence.

Wow, I think I know who you mean SeaRex. It makes sense now, hah.

Man, stuff like this didn't really go on back in the ezboards.. We didn't have hostility towards moderators or other members as far as I remember. DI has always been a respected mod and I think a few immature "members" need to understand that and try not to make themselves look bad trying to point out his apparent faults.

Things like this make it difficult to contribute to threads and the like, when you see members pointing out EXACTLY how many grammar and spelling errors a certain member has done. Its quite pathetic in my opinion.

you had closed it. So it could have been well active you just closed it too soon, like not giving a child enough time to develop his speaking skill's and not giving a flower enough time to grow, instead you killed off the baby and you poisoned our flower. My point?, you didn't give enough time to develop.
