I want to make my own oddworld game

I want to make my own oddworld game (2d of course) using java. I want to use all painted graphics that will simply be imported in. I know alot of you guys know alot more about oddworld lore than i do. So if anybody is interested in helping me with story, i would be much obliged. my email is chrisramos2003@hotmail.com I am very excited about this project and will surely get on the graphics before i get coding. Perhaps if my graphics are good enough, it might inspire some one else to code (Muwhahaha).

I strongly insist you use a program such as "The Games Factory", not Java. Although, in Java it could be posted on the forums... Anyways, look into a different game making program, just as a back-up. I strongly insist.

Good luck to you. Sounds promising 2D Oddworld games rawk. I will sure try to help as much as I can, but I am working on my own Oddworld project at the moment...

Thanks guys. As much as i love oddworld will be noticable in this game. I am working on the story currently before i get into any artwork. In a few weeks ill start posting some of the backgrounds im designing. My problem, though, is whether or not i should actually use the oddworld mythos and the species and or characters that oddworld has already developed or to allow it to be heavily influenced and to use my own chacters and species. What r ur thoughts.

Heres a taste of what i got going:

The main character (the playable character) lives in a small vishing village in a river valley. One day he decides to leave the village (perhaps its tradition , a way of discovering one self) and begins to climb the cliff face out of the valley. Half way up, something terrible happens, the village is flooded under 30ft of water and everything he knew is gone. He has nothing left to do but finish climbing the cliff. When he reaches the precipice it is lined with forest which he enters

He begins walking through, there are bugs buzzing and other nuances of life, when decides he must rest to take in all that has ahppened. When he awakes it is nightime. I'm thinkign, there will be torhces that beckon him to continue and eventually lead him to a forest village.

Thoughts?

I think you should make it oddworld influenced. It saves you from any possible legal quandries. But if you do want to make it an oddworld game, I would suggest emailing fan legal on fanlegal@oddworld.com to check it's okay.

For the sake of respect of the oddworld mythos and the creativity of my mind, i will make it simply oddworld influenced. While this will make it more difficult, it will be more than worth it. Thanks Nate.

I have in fact started to develop some of the graphical elements such as trees and mountains. If possible, i will begin posting theses images much later tonight.

More trees

Quick note to moderators. If i am being over zealous with my postings, please let me know. If there is certain rate of pic posting that i am exceeding, pleae let me know. thanks.

here is another set of tree elements. I have ideas for expanding the story to other biomes, but that may prove very difficult or overwhelming, rather. The first area is during winter time, so there will be snow in the fishing village in the begining of game and the forest that follows.

MOre Trees!

Enjoy guys. Since this is tediuos for me to post so often, it will be a while before i post again, but thank you all for your support. the next post will have plenty of goodies for u guys

Awsome quidproquo. The story sounds quite gripping, to me anyway. It hints at some realy self finding to be going on. I wouldn't worry too much about making it too Oddworld compliant. Personally i would use all Oddworld elements that you can, however there may be times where you really need to use another species of your own. I can imagin that it's easier to create bugs, insects and other small animals of your own design without disturbing the oddworld feel.

As you may know I'm currently working on a project myself, but if you think you might need some help with interfaces, or textures i might be able to help you.

Goodluck with your idea, and as Nate says i would check the legal matters before you spend all your hard effort on this project. Also make sure you keep a plan, it's good so you don't stray from your original ideas/concepts, and it keeps you on track.

good luck, i can help you with the story, if want. any way, if it's anything to do with oddworld, maybe you could have an oddworld faccility. the game seems awsome already, and you cam only get better and better with more experience. just thoughts and i can't wait to play your game.

If you made the graphics yourself, it looks very promising. The idea sounds nice 2.... If youre going to use jave you really have to post it here

To duveaux and concerned: I am indeed making the graphics on my own. I paint "the elements on paper" and then import them into photoshop. From here i am able to mix and match elements to make each screen.
As far as the programming and the actual turning this into a game, I am not too sure here. I do have a a pretty decent knowlege of java, but I am not sure if this will be the bes way to go about it. The game will "screen hop" as in the original abe games. I have checked out the program game maker. but it does not seem all the good(plus it costs money).

Let me give you guys an idea of the story. I have decied to move away from my original fishing village idea and am toying with what i think is a more interesting and less cliche storyline.

So this guy lives in the forest in his village and everything is good and for some reason he has to leave the forest and crap happens (i think the character should change and not have some cliche revenge story as i was heading to before). Im not sure at all about details. im thinking when he leaves his village he comes upon part of the forest that has been demolished. He tracks the people that have done this and gets swept of to a lumber processing plant or whatever, and ultimately "The City". An idea that has crossed my mind(but i could nt say how i would implement ) is that things such as drugs and maybe surgeries will become avaible to him ( i suppose they can give him abilites) so im also thinking there will be a negative aspect to his falling into the "evils"of city life.

What is really burining me is wheter or not I will use charcters from oddworld or make up my own characters. it would be a lot easier to user their characters but might also be more confining. Right now I am heading in the direction of designing my own charactes. but if you guys have any further insight on this, it would be much appreciated.

To mudling: please email me at chrisramos2003@hotmail.com i can use all the help with the story i can get.

Thanks everybody.

I'm not sure how to edit the title of my post but I want to make some things clear. I dont believe it will make use of oddworld characte

rs because

Well, you're a true artist then, they look quite nice
:
I have checked out the program game maker. but it does not seem all the good(plus it costs money).
About gamemaker... I use it myself, and it works for me, but I'm not in the advanced stuff. (except I'm making two quite advanced games at the moment).
You don't have to pay for using the free version of it neither do you have to pay to export your games... Also making a 'screen hop' game becmoes easier using gamemaker if you make or the screens different rooms or backgrounds...

I also know a lot of other programs to create games but I think for your game this one is the most compatible...

Anyway, wich program you're going to use good luck, and I hope for it will turn into a nice game...

BTW, you can't play gamemakergames online

*off topic* happy easter everyone! *off topic*
the game sounds great and i am having problems with my email but i will private message you and give you some ideas i have.
i think that you should use some speacies from oddworld and i think you can even use the speacies for the main character as long as you don't sell the game. i suggest to just email/talk to oddworld about the idea. good luck!

I suppose I will wait for the graphics and story to be finished before I get into programming, but it seems like gamemaker is the way to go. I especially like that they let you do particle effects (need full version i belive)

yeah, for particles you need the full version, but I believe you can make particles without having the full version... I found an example on the web wich creates particles without using the registered feature! I believe it was from www.bombartist.com, but I found that site is down.
If you want the example just PM me and I'll try to find it again (maybe I still have it on my computer)...
I, myself have the full version but I did never use particles in my game.
